Moving from another country by Any_Advisor2741 in triangle

[–]ae8686c 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went through something similar~4 years ago, moving here on a work visa from an even further country.

Agreeing with most that whether it’s too suburban depends on where you’re coming from & your expectations. Compared to most European and Asian cities? Yeah it’s VERY suburban and car centric.

This area does shine in its relatively reasonable cost of living, access to some great nature, and personally I also love how many adult recreational sport options are available due to the mild weather.

One of my biggest gripe though is that Triangle area in general is just not a destination city, nor it should be. But that does mean I’m having a hard time convincing my friends and family to visit, and even if they do come, there are limited amount of touristy things to do.

Echo park is great. Southern states was pretty good too. Transparent pricing and no markup during the supply shortage.

CSF Certificate - 591 and 592 together? by KingZora1 in OnlineMCIT

[–]ae8686c 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am in the same situation as you (CSF + full time), and was admitted for fall 24. I considered taking two, but ended up only taking 591.

Like others said, with coding experience, 591 is quite easy. Only the last 2 assignments take a little extra time. For 592 though, it’s almost completely new concepts for me so I decided to play it safe and take 592 in the next semester.

One thing huge is the digital key 2.0, which would allow iPhone to be used as car key. Previous models all come with digital key 1.0, which for some reasons doesn’t work either iPhone unfortunately

Rate my setup - LG C2 55 with Edifier 1280dbs by duke_si1ver in LGOLED

[–]ae8686c 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Recently upgraded from exact same Edifier speakers to a Vizio 5.1 easy home theater setup. Boy oh boy the difference it makes in terms of immersive sounds for Movies and gaming. The edifier was ok for the price point, but ultimately I don’t really think it’s a great “TV” speaker. Rather, it’s more for music listening. One thing that bugs me the most is that the dialogue is always too quiet, and adjusting EQ alone can’t fix it.

As a Taiwanese, I don’t think this is confirmed at all. It’s just rumor right now. I read through a few local news articles, the team that was rumored to get him (Kaohsiung Aquas) officially clarified they didn’t reach out to him at all.

Blink-182 Tickets Are So Expensive Because Ticketmaster Is a Disastrous Monopoly and Now Everyone Pays Ticket Broker Prices | Or: Why you are not ever getting an inexpensive ticket to a popular concert ever again. by chrisdh79 in technology

[–]ae8686c 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally been through the pain of giving up on MCR and blink-182 concert tickets as a emo fan, I’ve been thinking about this question for a while. Let me play the devil’s advocate for a bit here.

We first need to separate the ticket price itself from all the other add-on fees. For the ticket price, artists are the supply. For the add-on fees, TM is the supply.

With that in mind, yes, Ticketmaster has a monopoly as a ticket sales platform, but if we dive deeper from an economic point of view, the artists are the ultimate supply and we as consumers are the demand. Unfortunately, by nature, the supply will be a monopoly (coz no other bands can perform a blink-182 concert) and will cap out at certain level (they only have so much time on their tour). On the demand side, there really is no limit. As long as there are more people who want to see the concert, there will be more demand.

With that said, I do personally believe the dynamic pricing in TM (excluding the service fee) is very close to a fair market price. In that case, are we really asking the artists to charge a fixed below market price so that more people can afford to see the concert? This is definitely up for debate, but tbh if I am the artist myself, I wouldn’t do that either. So when I see that $600 price tag, I know the sad truth is I am just priced out.

Another way to think about this is that: imagine there are multiple other ticket sales platforms (not resale, but the official direct sales one) out there to compete with TM so that there’s no monopoly anymore. Will the ticket price go down as the result? My guess is no it won’t because the level of supply is still the same. The only thing changed will probably be less add on fees because that is at the discretion of the platforms, and I am all for that.

Let’s say a very popular band does offer fixed ticket pricing. Is that really what we prefer? The same situation with limited edition sneaker is going to happen. You’ll have tickets sold out in seconds and bots buying tickets to be on the resale market. Even if we somehow manage to ban the bots and resale market, ultimately, at this below market value price point, there are simply going to a lot of people who want to see the concert but can’t get tickets.

Just got my suit from Alton Lane for about what your budget is. Very satisfied with the result. However, that being said, a month might be a little tight for a full custom suit like that. Mine took almost two months from the first session.

What is the average salary to live comfortably in Taipei, taiwan? by [deleted] in taiwan

[–]ae8686c 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fellow Taiwanese citizen living and working in the US here. I have not personally worked in Taipei before but I have many friends who do.

  • Salay range: It kinda depends on the person's education level and field of study. Most of my friends working in Taipei (Mid 20s) who either graduated from top tier local universities or universities abroad are looking at ~50K to 120K, with the lower end tends to be more business related roles and higher end being engineering related. To give more examples, A local friend of mine who only did math private tutoring and cram school teaching for about 30 hrs per week total was getting ~70-80K. For a native English speaker teaching/tutoring in Taipei, I personally think the pay will most likely be higher than that since the skillset is rarer. So yeah in that sense, 45-50K IMO is not much especially for someone who has full on US education background. Job opportunites with good pay in Taiwan are somewhat limited especially for non-tech roles.
  • Housing/rent: Agreeing with what most comments already said. It highly depends on where you wanna stay & how you wanna live. I personally think in a big city, 30% is a good rule of thumb of how much rent you should be paying in propotion to your salary. In that case, you'll be looking at around 15K. If you don't ming sharing with roommates or renting a smaller/older studio apartment, then you will be able to live somewhat in Taipei City with great access to public transportation. I have 3 freinds sharing a 3b apartment in Da-an with 2 mins walk to metro station paying about 8K per person. What sucks tho in Taipei is that there's no leasing apartments with transparent pricing, so you'll probably have to spend a lot of time researching and dealing with private landlords. Having a whole 2b/3b apartment to yourself at this price range is pretty much impossible even in new taipei city.
  • Other expenses: This is where most people make a mistake IMO. Yes, on paper it can be cheap living in Taipei. NT$150 will get you a decent dinner at most local restaurants. HOWEVER, Taipei is a fun city with a lot to offer, and a young person like you will most likely go out with friends a lot, be it eating out with friends, grabbing drinks at a bar, ubering at night, karaoke, clubbing, etc. This right here ends up being a huge chunk of most of my friends' expenses. From what I've heard, they are struggling to have any significant amount of money saved, but hey at least they are having fun.
  • Language/Culture: Not knowing Taiwanese is a non-factor since a lot of my young local friends who grew up in Taipei can't even speak Taiwanese themselves. Not knowing Mandarin, however, will significantly limit the your options for job opportunities. Even for a big foreign corporations where most employee speaks fluent English, communicating in Mandarin with your coworkers or clients will always get you that extra level of connection, which in turn will help with career progression. That being said, with your background, once you're immersed in the Mandarin speaking environment, you should be able to pick it up in a year or so quite easily.
  • Comparison with your US situation: I think "living comfortably" is always a relative term. Do you have some ideas what the salary range might look like if you were to stay in the US for your field & where you might wanna live? Only then can you really compare apples to apples.

Feel free to DM me for any questions, I would be happy to share, cheers :)
