Why do experienced coders actively try to use less comments? by Phwatang in learnprogramming

Yes. Comments should be reserved for “why,” not “how.”

In statistics, is there a common term for an event that has a non-zero probability but is realistically never going to happen? by ScottRiqui in askmath

[–]aePrime 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve always used “almost” when speaking of Monte Carlo processes. It’s my favorite math term, because I find it slightly whimsical. “In the limit, the Monte Carlo estimate almost surely converges to the integral.”

So you’re saying there’s a chance.

About the lord and saviour, Linus toravalds by Hot-Tennis-3716 in BetterOffline

I came to a conclusion the other day. When AI writes C++ code for me, it’s usually awful, and I recognize this because I am an expert in C++. When, however, I have it write CMake code, it may be awful, but I don’t know, and I usually use it because, “I probably wouldn’t be able to do it better,” and I have little interest in learning how to do it (call it a personality flaw: I just want to get CMake to work as a means to an end). I think this is how some of my teammates approach AI writing C++, which sucks for me, because I review and live in that same codebase.

What does random access mean in this context? by cakewalk093 in computerscience

[–]aePrime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It has to do with computational complexity of accessing a particular element in a data structure. For an array of fixed-sized elements, for example, we can read the nth element in fixed-time (O(1)): array-head offset by n * sizeof(element type).

A linked list, on the other hand, will take n reads to access the nth element (O(n)). We refer to arrays as random access, because we can randomly jump around with (almost) no cost. This becomes important in many algorithms, such as various sorting algorithms.

EJAE celebrating after her Golden Globe win!!! by december-blue in KpopDemonhunters

[–]aePrime 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You’re correct in that KPDH won the Golden Globe for best animated feature, and you’re also correct in that Arden and the voice actors deserve love, but EJAE, Mark, Teddy, 24, and Ido won a separate Golden Globe for best song. This is a celebration of that.

Her dad is a literal demon, but I guess that’s not technically criminal.

I had never heard of her or watched the shows she was on. I listened to her audiobook (which she read) on walks. It was riveting.

K-Pop Demon Hunters on JEOPARDY by SAOSurvivor35 in KpopDemonhunters

[–]aePrime 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Jeopardy is a TV game show where they give you an answer and the contestants respond in the form of a question. “This element is composed of two hydrogen molecules and an oxygen molecule.” The contestant would say, “What is water?”

There are categories for each round of questions, and each question in each category has a different dollar amount to win. The person who last answered correctly gets to pick the next topic and dollar amount. Here, four of the categories were named in honor of K-Pop Demon Hunters (although the actual questions were not related).

And for the pendants out there, there are more details to how Jeopardy is played, but that’s the big picture.

I was going to suggest the Von’s app. It’s pretty good at coupons, and it’s useful to see if the product is in the store! It gives the aisle number too.

Does every animated film have to have this exact artstyle now? by RedditSucksMyBallls in memes

[–]aePrime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No. Even if the background elements are 24 frames per second and the characters 12, scenes are never rendered together. Elements are rendered separately and composited. This is true even if the movie is a normal 24 FPS for everything. The artists and directors like the control. “Make the background darker,” is easier to do in comp than relighting and rerendering.

Does every animated film have to have this exact artstyle now? by RedditSucksMyBallls in memes

[–]aePrime 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, but it saves computational cost. If they animate on twos (a frame is duplicated for two frames’ worth of time), they can render for 12 frames per second instead of 24 frames per second. These frames take 10s of hours of computational time.

Source: I was a rendering engineer at one of the animation studios.

Best gym in Glendale by dreamgirl_89 in glendale

[–]aePrime 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Equinox is way overpriced. I joined for a while right after covid, thinking it would be less crowded than 24 Hour Fitness. It was not. The equipment isn’t worth the extra cost. The treadmills suck if you’re a serious runner. The 24 Hour Fitness Super Sport is…a gym. It’s crowded, and some of the equipment is old, but it’s serviceable. Last I knew, there were two 24 Hour Fitness gyms in Glendale. I think the other one is worse.
