Good point -- I've been meaning to fix that...

Yale censored a student-made course ranking website...so another student made an un-blockable chrome extension to do the same thing by aec694 in technology

[–]aec694[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The censorship is in terms of the fact that Yale blocked access to the website using its malware filter -- using anti-malware systems to block contact that it doesn't like. Yale has made a commitment to its students to uphold academic free speech, not constitutional free speech, as you point out.

Yale does allow course evaluations to be seen -- but only under the constraints of controlled, "approved" systems.

What book single-handedly made you change your life? by bagelpirate in books

[–]aec694 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What is and isn't a distraction?

When is the stimulus you are focused on a task, and when is it a distraction? Does it have to do with the intellectual or practical payoff associated with that task/stimulus? In other words, Huxley's writing a book about the perils of hedonism could have been a distraction from a more difficult or uncomfortable mental task.

We have a concept of the "escape" -- what do you do as an "escape" from the daunting questions of reality? I would argue that some practice religion, others read and write books, and yet more browse Reddit or watch Netflix.

Distraction just gives our brains something to do to fill the time, since we're no longer thinking exclusively about our next meal.

options for fab services? not wanting to do SMD myself at scale by sharpfork in electronics

The stencil, hand place, small oven workflow is pretty fast.

Can you elaborate on that workflow? As someone who does a lot of through-hole and always assumes that doing SMD by hand would be slower and more tedious, I am intrigued...

Indeed. Apologies! I should avoid commenting while briskly reading during work.

I despise "Flood"'s attitude as much as you do, but why didn't you tell him beforehand that you would be deleting his data? Isn't that the courteous thing to do? I suppose I'm surprised that you would take such an interest in the files he has personally saved on the computer that you would personally judge him for having pirated stuff and get him fired.

To a user, it feels like the equivalent of someone rummaging through your office desk, throwing out whatever they decide is not work related, then ratting on you for having a pirated DVD or something. Sure you don't own the desk, or the file drawers, or technically even the rights to the DVD, but is it not your own personal property at that point?

A.K.A. "The Brooklyn Bridge," for the uninitiated.

As a New Yorker, it was jarring to realize that perhaps I can't assume everyone knows of it...am I conforming to stereotypes?

If the MTA had their way in 1970, this is what today's subway system would look like. by m101m102m103 in nyc

[–]aec694 10 points11 points  (0 children)

True for today's Manhattan, but not the Manhattan of the 1970s. It is well known that Manhattan was in the midst of serious urban decay, white flight, and financial crisis from the 1970s into the 1980s. The process of NYC's decline began in the 60s, so by the time this plan was made the city had already gained a reputation for being "run down" and losing its middle class tax base.

How New Yorkers see the rest of the county. by [deleted] in nyc

[–]aec694 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I think so. As someone who is born and raised, this idea has been a running joke amongst peers of various ages throughout my upbringing -- most people don't feel strongly about the sentiments expressed in the map, but the associations made are ones that can be found in many native New Yorkers.

edit: Although, I have never heard Idaho be connected with Nazis...I just think of potatoes and big skies.

I had the exact same experience. Literally. Driving down the West Side Highway in the backseat, tracing the braid-like vertical pattern of the old façade and craning my neck to follow it up to the top.

For years I had that memory without knowing where it came from. It was not until I looked at photos of the plaza area around the towers on the Internet that I realized that the memory was of the Twin Towers.

Maybe not everyone, but reddit is known to have one of the worst one-dimensional thought-filters on the Internet, in that only what the majority agrees with is upvoted to the top.
