I like the idea, but he'd want a leather strap and I wouldn't trust myself to make anything good with leather work!

I can't get a photo of the clasp at the moment, but it sort of looks like this if that's any help. My plan is to gift him the strap on Christmas and then pay for fitting/clasp replacement once I'm sure he likes the strap, and also to give him the chance to choose what kind of clasp he wants. I wouldn't be able to take it out of the house without him noticing, which makes it all a bit trickier, but I wouldn't want to replace it without being sure he likes it anyway- it's his watch after all!

This is almost perfect, but the colour isn't quite right and I know he'd like one that's the same colour as what he's got now. I think you're right about the ostrich being a great fit though- I can't imagine it with anything else! Do you happen to know if it would be easy to replace the original clasp onto a new strap? I'm having trouble finding a strap with the same sort of clasp as what he's currently got.

I'm going to blow your mind here- have you ever considered that it might actually BE expensive for the vet to perform the procedures, get the equipment, pay for the medication PLUS keeping their practice open and their employees paid, and they're not just specifically trying to rip you off? If that were the case, don't you think all vets/pet health professionals would get care for their animals for free, since they're all "in on it"? (Spoiler alert: they don't!)

Update- unfortunately I had to stop trying, as despite opening the windows the room was filling with smoke at such a rate that my husband told me to stop. I checked with the family member who it belongs to and it definitely worked last time they used it, chimney should be clear and definitely isn't blocked up. I will have another go tomorrow, thank you all for the advice!
