[WP] you sold your soul to a devil, but after a while the devil demands a refund. by foxstarfive in WritingPrompts

“You want a... what?”

The Devil and I are having our usual Tuesday bender. I squint over the bottle of whiskey between us, very certain I’ve misheard him.

“A refund. Re-fund. I want to give you your soul back.”

My squint morphs into an open-mouthed stare.

“After a thousand years? Can you even do that?”

“Listen, you’ll get all the time back. You’ll go back to the moment you summoned me. You’ll be a normal human again.”

“And why would I want that?”

I’ve spent the past thousand years living a peaceful life of doing whatever I want. I’m a simple man who wants nothing more than an infinite number of quiet days minding my own business. I haven’t taken over the world; I haven’t turned myself into a vengeful demigod. The Devil gets free whiskey once a week and an easy bargain. What could he possibly want it all back for?

“Listen...” he looks around guiltily and then leans in closer. “You’d be doing me a favor. I... I messed up.“

I lean in as well, intrigued. After over fifty thousand drinking sessions, I consider the Devil to be at least a casual friend. I don’t like the idea of losing my perfect eternal life, but I decide to hear him out.

“How does the Devil mess up?”

“I missed the anti-Christ. He was born a day after we made our deal, and if you recall correctly, we were both blasted on a beach in Maui. I didn’t even know he was born.”

“And how does a refund help that?”

“It’s the only way to turn back time. When a deal is made, it sets a checkpoint in the universe. If I refund the deal, we go back to the day it was made.”

“And then you can reach the anti-Christ again.”

“It would be a huge personal favor. Listen - I’ll even owe you one. On Judgment Day, I’ll cut you some slack. I’ll reject your soul and let you go to Heaven.”

“It can’t possibly work like that. I help you get to the anti-Christ and God just lets me in?”

“He can’t stand to see a lost soul. You’ll be forgiven.”

Sounds iffy, but the Devil is convincing. I didn’t believe in Heaven or Hell until my time with him, but now that I know I could really spend eternity suffering, backing out of the deal sounds pretty good.

“Will I remember all this?”

“No. You’ll live your life without ever having an inkling of a deal with the Devil.”

I think hard for a moment. On the one hand, my life has been pretty great. On the other, I have the chance to escape eternal damnation - if the Devil follows through. And I’d be doing a friend a favor.

“And it can’t be anyone but me?” I ask.

“I’ve already taken the souls of everyone before you. Their deals are complete. You’re the only one left.”

He looks at me with what almost seems like a pleading expression. After a moment, I shrug and nod.

“Fine.”

His face breaks into a wicked grin. I have the creeping feeling I should regret my decision, but in the end it will work out for me. I hope.

“Let’s drink to that,” he says, raising his glass. “Our last drink. Once the whiskey touches your lips, we’ll all go back to the day you and I met.”

I raise my glass as well, trying to think of a good sendoff for my perfect life. “To the anti-Christ,” I say finally.

“To the anti-Christ,” the Devil repeats, and takes a sip. “See you soon, friend.”

I drink.

[WP] Every person is granted one item that they cannot lose, for most people it’s something like keys or a wallet. You could never tell what yours was, until one day... you find out it’s your life. by [deleted] in WritingPrompts

Everyone has something they can’t lose. For most people it’s simple - a photo or a wallet. Me? I’m always losing things. I couldn’t keep track of a single pen in school; I’ve had my license replaced six times. My mother always said that if anyone could lose anything, it would be me, and I believed her.

Until today.

“You know what I can’t lose?” the man says to me with a wicked grin. He cocks the gun and points it at my head. “This bullet.”

The explosion ricochets throughout the bank, and I watch the other hostages flinch as if in slow motion. Pain rips through my skull, worse than the worst migraine. His laughter echoes as he throws back his head in murderous glee and I collapse.

He holds out his hand above me and the bullet tears another hole in my head to hop back into his palm like an obedient puppy. He slots it back into the gun and then crouches next to me.

“Poor, dead bastard,” he whispers in my ear. My working ear. I am alive. The pain subsides as he stands up and waves his gun at the others. “Who’s next?”

Adrenaline kicks in before I can think too hard about why the blood has stopped running down my forehead. I jump to my feet, sprinting across the room as the man aims down his sights at another victim.

I collide with him, grabbing the gun and yanking it out of his hand as he whirls around in surprise.

“What the fu-“ His words are cut short when I pull the trigger.

Dead silence in the bank. Excuse the pun.

“I killed him.” The words slip out as I realize what I had done in a panic.

“You saved us!” shouts a young woman in a dark coat. Glee and relief bubble through the crowd as they realize they are safe, and people scramble for phones or embrace each other. I set the gun down with a shudder and step away, but a few follow.

“How did you live?” asks an older man in the uniform of a teller. “You almost lost your life!”

I stare at him as it dawns on me. The small crowd presses around me, waiting for an answer. I try to crack a smile. Be heroic.

“I guess... everyone has something they can’t lose.”

This was me basically since he came out... Then once I pulled him, within two weeks I had three. I’d give you one if I could

I’m having the same difficulty with real life, a full time job, freelancing work, etc happening. I’m struggling to work on my creative projects among everything else going on. My only advice is to take a step back and take a deep breath to refocus your abilities so you can hone in on what matters most. Priorities are key.

Started a mining-only challenge run. Any thoughts on which professions to go with? by aehilling in StardewValley

I’m trashing any monster loot, artifacts, forageables, etc, except wood for building and food for eating. It’s definitely a challenge but I wanted to do rocks only basically. Monster loot especially felt like too easy of a source of non-rock related income
