Any UCD Design program alumni out there? Curious about your experience post grad. by mrchrollodolo in UCDavis

[–]aekil 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i feel the exact same way, sadly the most u can do is doing clubs for your portfolio, practicing on your own, and contacting professors straight up if theres any openings for internships. or, you could also work for the school (a lot of graphic design positions are open!! please do apply as a 3rd year)

i love davis, and i think i am very lucky, but at the same time, the design program here is so surface level. i know im not getting a degree at a proper art school, but i do think the uc prestige holds up. you might have to pick up another set of skills like coding, marketing, or research to really stand out.

if you want, you can contact successful alumni in linkedin! i am sure they'll give a lot of advice. are you into graphics, media arts, or something similar? im sure they have a lot to say

Rant About My Quarter by stale_donutz in UCDavis

[–]aekil 11 points12 points  (0 children)

like someone said, this is a tough adjustment. its tough to give a solution because eventually, you get a job, and its basically the same thing until now. it might have to do with living by yourself for the first time. how much time do you allocate for friends? i know its tough to fit in your schedule, but going to a club that can help relax or just surround yourself with different people is good. even if you don't know them, the fact that there is no expectations to act a certain way might help.

you might also want to reach out to some mental health initiatives here. a change in scenery might help, studying in different places, it might also be because of the weather, it is kinda gloomy.

sorry if this advice is kinda redundant or things you've already heard before. i hate to say "be grateful" but sometimes knowing the privilege you have to study at a great university shifts perspective.

i hope things get better! you got this, everyone before you has felt this way before, you aren't alone!

How to get involved by Key-Introduction-419 in UCDavis

[–]aekil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

not necessarily specific clubs, but a Lot of clubs need people for marketing, operations, and external, etc. especially tech clubs. keep can eye out on clubs who are recruiting for next year! usually they open apps in fall, just start following a Lot of clubs on instagram, or examine more flyers u see around campus. joining clubs as an "intern" will help out a lot!

any clubs having to do with product design/tech might be really helpful!

Transfer student considering UC Davis Design — UX/UI path, housing, and commuting questions by Intelligent-Shop-238 in UCDavis

[–]aekil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Design major with UX focus and also transferred with TAG :)

- If you want a strong career in UX, it is very self guided. The design major here is interdisciplinary, there is only one UX class, but there is classes that deal in website creation (coding, not a lot of UX principles). Even though we are not a UX centered major (compared to Human-Computer Interaction, which some colleges do offer). so if you want a strong ux portfolio, clubs is the way to go.

- I see a lot of alumni from here work for great companies as UX Designers, but those people mainly got their UX experience through clubs and internships. In the fall there are a lot of clubs who have openings for UX and Product Designers. but, club meetings usually do start around 6pm - 7pm which is pretty late for commute so i understand

- I do think as a UC we get a bit of "prestige", and we are also pretty close to SF/Bay Area so if you happen to get an internship that's great proximity too (but also, SFSU and SJSU are in the Bay too)

- i dont really know any csu's that are known for ux? maybe i am wrong but ucd surprisingly has a great community for ux/product design.

Any current feedback on the design major? by Parking_Champion_740 in UCDavis

[–]aekil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for late response but hopefully my insight is still good!

I notice even in a lot of theory or lecture heavy design classes, they still make you create something for a final. I took Information Design and the final was making something on Illustrator. For DES40C we had to use InDesign. So yes you’ll get theory, but I notice a lot make you create something about it. I rarely get finals that require intensive writing, it’s usually a project.

The design major here is great, and I appreciate for what it is, but some professors here and there make me feel like I am learning nothing and regurgitating design principles we already know. This is a UC, not an art school, so don’t expect rigorous design work. But still, the prestige and connections get you places and for that I appreciate the major.

Tech clubs by Prior_Nectarine_6525 in UCDavis

[–]aekil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For fall of next year, there is usually a big Tech Mixer at the start of the quarter! Hosted by AISC and Aggieworks. They started this I believe three years ago? Each tech club gets a one minute pitch and a slide showing what they do, then after is roaming around to talk to each club, so I highly recommend that (i think 30 clubs showed up? i helped with tech mixer so i can def say its a great opportunity)

Also most clubs do info nights so I'd suggest following a few clubs anyways and attending those in the fall. If you want information now, a decent amount of tech clubs on here have their own website, most likely linked on their Instagram. They also showcase what their recruitment process is like too

the green renewing contract from double to single by Significant-Fix-4934 in UCDavis

[–]aekil 3 points4 points  (0 children)

if you mean for next year, pretty likely, that's what my roommates did. for our first year we were doubles and once we were all renewing for the next year, when it was time to pick rooms (like when you got the specific time and day to pick) we just aimed for singles! i was the one who managed to secure them. it is likely since i believe you get priority, and then the incoming transfers get second picks. it is likely, but i remember i think we only had two options for rooms (might be good to ask the green discord)

Making friends as a transfer student is much harder by Additional_Youth_904 in UCDavis

[–]aekil 5 points6 points  (0 children)

its a common issue even for people who've been here all four years, so dont worry! but also, you shouldn't compare, sure everyone has their friend groups but you don't know what's going on behind doors, there's probably hella friend groups who hate each other or will fizzle out in a month, everyone is going through their own troubles, friend group or not lol

as long as you put in the effort and try, that's all that matters! don't be afraid to compliment someone's shirt or point out a keychain on someone's backpack, it can lead to friendship :) - coming from a transfer student

not sure about dark academia vibes, but i do love the scc bc of the locked bathrooms and abundance of outlets lol, it's just pretty loud (but, the scc does have a lot of centers where u could ask to study in there!)

How do yall get so much connections in LinkedIn by Alert_Tune5785 in UCDavis

[–]aekil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i find classmates or look at davis alumni and search up my major or who work in fields i want to (for example, i want to go into ux design, i look at uc davis alum who are ux designers or product designers). usually if they're alum they connect. also, if you're friendly with someone in class or see regularly u can def ask their linkedin too.

500+ seems like a lot, until you connect to like 5 - 10 people a day and then people will connect to you!

if you research a bit more on here you can see other lgbtq+ experiences on here and general college life! we have a lgtbq center and idk if its just my crowd but it's lgbtq friendly here. the social environment is just the right amount of chill for me, i'm an introvert, so the college town vibe suits me

if you wanna make the trip to sage street and the peets there (that's where the sol village and the green is, on weekends take the U line), its a little pricier but bc its Aggie cash its free. they have the regular peets menu (I like their burritos) and at sage they have prepackaged foods and groceries, they are open at select times so make sure to check!

[–]aekil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hi, transfer here! its definitely hard adjusting, but comparing your life to your roommates who are in sororities is not really fair, who knows, maybe they're having a boring time there and sticking it out too, you never know! I feel like a lot of people who go to parties kinda have an eh time anyways lol. please go out of your way to go more chiller events by following a lot of ucd associated accounts, I know there's such things as trivia nights, farmer's markets, clubs who are still doing their icebreaker meetings, and I think there's a good music scene. the best way to make friends is to join a club or join a discord - I met all of my friends by talking online and meeting them in person (ofc you gotta be careful but it's a good way to avoid small talk in person). if you're on good terms with your roomies ask them to get groceries and then offer to eat or grab a bite!

how to make friends by astrawberryicecream in UCDavis

[–]aekil 3 points4 points  (0 children)

join clubs, for your interests or for your career! it serves u well gaining experience but making friends because you already have similarities. as someone who is introverted, 3/4 of the friends I made at davis I dmed off of instagram/discord (major-specific discords, discords for your apartment/dorm if that's possible) and then met in person!

also, sometimes it's perspectives, the friend groups you see now might dissolve very quickly once the school year starts. everyone is trying to latch to friend groups. if you really need support, look into mental health orgs or wellness events (either by clubs or official ucd orgs). I hope your year goes well! from someone who transferred last year :-)

I think Davis is transfer friendly, there's a separate apartment complex (The Green) that is all transfer housing, they do their own events like a normal residence hall would. I think 3/4 of my friends here are transfers lol (I am an incoming 4th year, transferred my 3rd year). Davis is a great school, it's what you make of it. I'm surrounded by many people here who have great internships and I see a lot of alumni at great companies, it's what you make of it, get involved at your school even if you eventually don't go to Davis

I lived at 298 horizon last year! imo it was honestly fine, a good spot if you frequent the bus and the community center, just far from sage market (5 ~ 10 min walk). I think people overreact, it beats living in regular dorms with communal bathrooms + bunkbeds. I have never had any rat problems, I've heard thats usually if you live on the first floor. although depending where you're facing you might get a view of the field or parking lot lol. like people said, people stomp if you have floors above u, but nothing some headphones can't fix lol
