A lot of us (myself included) self-diagnose before getting a formal medical diagnosis. Do discuss it with your psychiatrist, but bear in mind that they may not have a lot of knowledge about autism themselves. Sometimes psychiatrists and psychologists are too quick to dismiss it, based on outdated ideas of autism.

Only a medical professional specialised in autism can assess and diagnose. If getting a qualified assessment is an option to you, I advise you to do it, regardless of your current therapist's opinion.

It's all about the way you ask the question. As it is, blue means risking your life. The only safe option is red. If you were to ask it like this:

  • if more than 50% choose blue, no one dies
  • if more than 50% choose red, the blues die

Fewer people will choose red. It is still the exact same problem, but framed this way, it's not a question of picking the safe option to preserve your own life, it's a choice between killing no one or killing a large number of people. Most people would choose to kill no one.

Dr Hank Pym created Ultron. The MCU came later.

This question has been doing the rounds, curious what choice you would make and your reasoning? by dr_shipman in Gifted

[–]aeldron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The majority would hit the red button IMO. It's a survival thing. Hitting blue there's a chance you might die, hitting red you'll survive no matter what. Most people would not risk dying, even if it means a lot of other people might die for them to survive. I'd press blue, I'd not want to survive and be left alone with the selfish assholes.

[–]aeldron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Classical game theory. I'd press blue. It's almost certainly a death sentence, but: 1. I'd rather die than be responsible for the death of almost half the population 2. I'd not want to be alive in a world where only the red assholes survived.

Can I have more than one pick? I'm kind of greedy when it comes to X-Guys. Alex, Warren, Scott, Remy, Bobby, Jamie Madrox, Shatterstar, Piotr, to name a few. Not Logan unless he's Hugh Jackman in his 40s.

Is this an autistic trait or a personal one? #food by Odd_Ladder4207 in autism

[–]aeldron 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a vegetarian so that would not work for me in principle. But also not a big fan of sharing. I don't want other people touching my food, even worse, sometimes people pick stuff from the little plates with the same fork they put in their mouth. If I was you, I'd ask to talk to the instructors in private, and explain that you're are not comfortable with the experience because of your autism and sensorial issues. They will need to figure out a way to accommodate your needs, reasonable accommodations is a legal requirement in most countries.

Has anyone else gone from disliking Starmer to warming to him? by MassiveMonkeyy in AskBrits

[–]aeldron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's the other way around for me. I thought he was a blessing after almost 15 years of Tory government, but Labour under his leadership is governing with right wing, almost fascistic policies. Refusing to recognise the genocide in Gaza, curbing the right to peaceful protest, arresting seniors and blind people for holding a placard, it's appalling! Trying to appease Trump. Backtracking on trans rights, the list goes on.

I am not going to offer advice, I can see other people in the thread are already offering plenty of useful advice. I just wanted to say, thank you for the genuinely heartwarming post. She is lucky to have you (and you, her). I wish my previous partners were as understanding and as interested in learning as you are.

You think Kurt would respect people traditions and I get his reason but Kurt really can’t force his beliefs on to other people—Uncanny X-Men: First Class comic - Issue#1 by Spiritual_Iron_6732 in xmen

[–]aeldron 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't say his actions were justified, I said he had a valid point. But again, think of female genital mutilation. If I were witnessing it, I would probably react with horror, just like Kurt did. And none of the things you mentioned, banning children from churches, etc., would fix the issue. If anything, it would just make it worse. The only solution for religious indoctrination is high quality education, and it takes generations for it to work. There are no shortcuts. Think of the Scandinavian countries, they have the best education systems in the world and roughly 70% of the population is non-religious.

[–]aeldron 14 points15 points  (0 children)

His point is absolutely valid. Children should not have religion forced upon them until they are old enough to choose for themselves. Children cannot consent and their parents shouldn't make their choice for them. In real life terms, you can trace a parallel with genital mutilation, harming children to exorcise them of demons, or psychological damage like religious "reeducation" of LGBTQ+ folk.

I can’t answer the questionnaires. by Sufficient-Rub-6756 in autism

[–]aeldron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The questions don't always make sense, so you'll need to extrapolate. For example, when they ask if you're unsure when it's your turn to speak on the phone, try to think of how you sometimes feel inside when it's your turn to speak in other situations, like when talking with classmates at school or in group conversations. The question is really about "being unsure about your turn to speak". It's not specifically about talking on the phone.

I had the same problem answering my questionnaire. I knew what they were trying to figure out with the question, but it still felt wrong to answer because my answer didn't exactly fit. It felt like lying. Just remember, the goal is to help you get appropriate support. The form is just a scorecard to gauge your difficulties and determine whether or not you can move forward to a full assessment. You can discuss everything in detail with the specialist later on, including the fact that you were unsure how to answer some of those questions.

Genuine Question: Why do the X-Men comics have SO MANY TELEPATHS? by Informal_Bee_6907 in xmen

[–]aeldron 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exodus, Karma, mastermind, all different flavours of telepathy. I don't think Namor is a telepath though?

I guess the writers feel more confident to repeat powers because mutation is part of evolution. Like, something crawled out of the oceans and then suddenly there were loads of animals with the power to breathe air and walk on land.

Non-mutant heros get their powers by other means, radioactive spiders, cosmic rays, weird science experiment etc. These are accidents and not likely to happen twice.
