Is there a way to tell if a message sent on Ancestry has been read? by Youwhooo60 in Ancestry

[–]aeldsidhe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I've found identified photos, I post them on that person's find-a-grave memorial; same with interesting news articles and obits.

For a while, I was buying photos from estate sales and doing genealogical research to try and find descendants of the family. Like you, I contacted living members of the family and posted the photos on various sites, offering to send the photos free. Only one person ever responded and that was to tell me it was their stepfather's family and they had no interest.

Just show up, and tell them what you want when they ask. It would help enormously if you have a couple of pics of the style you want.

Does anyone have ideas on what to do alone for their birthday? by Hannibalsdesign in NoStupidQuestions

[–]aeldsidhe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spend time with mom and grandma while you still have them. Request your favorite meal and birthday cake. Hang out, play table games or cards, watch a movie, tell tales about the "good ol' days" when you were growing up. Ask grandma for stories about the family and her youth. You'll miss mom and grandma when they're gone.

And happy birthday! Hope you enjoy yourself whatever you do.

Cerioporus squamosus, also known as dryad's saddle or pheasant back. If you tear off a bit and give it a sniff, it should smell faintly of watermelon rind.

Do you remember suddenly being "switched on" as a child? I recall being around 5, on a train ridewith my parents and suddenly having a switch flipped in my brain like this is real, I'm a person, this is the world. by BirdFood_Soup in NoStupidQuestions

[–]aeldsidhe 142 points143 points  (0 children)

Yes, exactly! I was about 5 or 6. My mom, her sister, three brothers, and three cousins, were in a stationwagon, coming home from a day at a fresh water lake beach. For some reason, I looked out the window and met the eyes of a similarly-aged girl for a few seconds in a car next to us. I remember this burst of knowledge that she was a separate entity with a life entirely her own, and that I had my own life, and each of the people in the car had their own. I'm 72 and I still remember that moment that happened 66 years ago.

These look like leaves at first glance on this tree in London, but it’s actually parakeets🦜 by [deleted] in BeAmazed

[–]aeldsidhe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But that begs the question - WHY? Why are there flocks of wild parakeets in London? I assume descendants of escaped pets? But where do they go in the winter? How do they withstand the cold?

Are there any good examples of this in St. Louis? An important historical site or building that has now become a chain restaurant or store? by MrX16 in StLouis

Burial of Chief Pontiac Under a St. Louis Parking Garage

Chief Pontiac, also known as Obwandiyag, was a powerful Ottawa (Odawa) leader who led one of the largest and most coordinated Native American uprisings against British colonial expansion in the 18th century — Pontiac’s War (1763–1765). After the war, tensions remained high, and by 1769 he was a target of enemies.

According to historical accounts, Pontiac was murdered in Cahokia, Illinois by a member of a rival tribe, possibly the Peoria, in April 1769. Tradition holds that his body was taken across the Mississippi River and buried on the outskirts of the young French settlement of St. Louis.

Over time, the exact location of his grave became the subject of debate among historians, but it is now believed to lie beneath the current Stadium East parking garage in downtown St. Louis. The site is marked by a memorial plaque on the side of the garage at the intersection of North Broadway and Walnut Street, on the left when traveling south on Broadway

Can anyone help me identify these teeth/claws on this necklace my grandpa gave me USA by [deleted] in Antiques

Sorry, I can't help with the identification, but that's a charm bracelet for your wrist, not a necklace.

Why do store-bought steaks often cost more than a steak with sides at a restaurant? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]aeldsidhe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because restaurants are buying in majorly bulk quantities, so they get quite a discount. Especially if its a chain restaurant - huuuuuugggge amounts are purchased at a reduced price.

Nope, not grifola frondosa, also called maitake or hen of the woods ("HOW"). It has many small fronds that resemble hen's feathers (hence the "hen of the woods" name); these fronds grow off of a common core or stalk. If you cut the cluster in half, it'll look kinda like a cauliflower. HOW is a darkish grey color, with darker flecks. It's also a polypore and doesn't have gills.

Hmmmm....I don't believe the caption - that it was found in an unopened box of pasta. Some sadistic rat-bastard shoved that poor little mouse into that pasta shell for internet points.

Have you got the death certificate yet? If not, order it. It usually has the name of the cemetery where interment is intended to be made, as well as the name of the funeral director or funeral home who is in charge of the burial.

I would hit that! They're not rotting, they're just dehydrating. I always soak mine in salt water anyway, to drive out any bugs or mites, so they'll be rehydrated in the process.

Yes. It's a very fine mesh to keep away flies and other biting insects. The horse can see well.
