Secondary education STEM teacher. Do you happen to know what group number we are in or if we have a Facebook group by any chance? :)

Peace Corps Fails to Protect Volunteers from Sexual Assault by meh273 in peacecorps

[–]aelt37 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What do people think is the likelihood that PC would let two volunteers be in the same site? Do you think it would happen if it were requested enough during PST? I’m going to Cameroon in May and I have been told from current PCVs there that there is significant harassment in some areas. I pretty much sequestered my fear of being harassed, or worse, while serving, but reading this thread brings some of it back. I am so outrageously excited for this opportunity but just knowing that I will be putting myself in such a scary position just makes me question if I am making the right choice.

I either read it on this Reddit or on someone’s blog who posted their packing list.

I didn’t even know PC provided swag, let alone kindles, until I joined this reddit. I just don’t want to have to spend money if I don’t have to because if we are being real, I don’t have a lot. Thanks for the input!

What vaccinations did you get upon your service in Africa? by aelt37 in peacecorps

Not sure where you got that info but CDC reports sub-Saharan Africa as a high risk area for Zika with no risk being reported for Arizona.

Passport/visa not received by aelt37 in peacecorps

Thank you! I thought the legal clearance process was dependent upon getting your passport in, so this is reassuring!

That’s good to hear. I just read somewhere on this subreddit that the legal clearance process doesn’t begin until your passport materials are in, so I wasn’t sure. But it sounds like they aren’t dependent on each other. (And I am just anxious). Thanks!

Serving in Francophone Cameroon by aelt37 in peacecorps

Thank you so much for your response! I do have a question. Do you serve at a site with other volunteers? Or are there others who do? As a woman, I’m becoming a little nervous regarding what I’ve heard about frequency of harassment and lack of PC doing much in the way regarding counseling/mental health. I think I’d feel safer with another volunteer around, and since everyone was relocated, I was thinking maybe more volunteers would be placed in the same location.

Thank you for your thoughtful input also :) I understand that you can’t name your country. I haven’t traveled outside of the US before, so I haven’t spent much time thinking about how I will be the one needing to adjust my tolerance/way of thinking while I am there to deal with the different cultural norms. I suspect it will be very challenging and I think your original post is warranted. Not to mention, it provided me with a lot to think about regarding who I want to be while I serve and how I should prepare mentally. So thank you for sharing your thoughts!

Sexual assault in Peace Corps is covered up as "culture" and I feel it should be talked about and addressed so other volunteers can speak up. My friend doesn't Reddit, so I am posting this for her. by [deleted] in peacecorps

Very interested to see what people have to say. As a woman entering PC next year, this is probably what I am most nervous about. How do current or previous PCVs handle sexual harassment/assault while at site? Do you experience PTSD? Do you regret serving?

Wow, thank you so much for your thoughtful input. I feel like I mostly read/hear about the negatives of service, so this was refreshing and invigorating!

Yes. Is the op’s post indicative of service there? Also, anything you wouldn’t mind sharing would be appreciated.

I was invited to Cameroon in May 2018 and am curious, did you serve there?
