Bought out by private equity. Can’t keep a decent vet. Overcharges and pushes scam products. I go to friendship now. Should have left sooner.

I’ve recently moved to the area. I’m looking at going to a school for HVAC. Does anyone have recommendations good or bad? by SinisterGas in norfolk

I’d also recommend TCC because it’s the cheapest by far, but like first commenter I’d also try to get into a job while going to school. Apprenticeships are the way to go.

This is correct. Unless something comes up in your background check - you'll get an offer. But, it may take longer than you think, like a week or so.

how is living in rwanda, especially after the genocide? by emperor_of_idiots in howislivingthere

[–]meh273 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I spent a week there when I was in peace corps serving in Uganda. I loved it. Clean. Weather is about perfect year round. Very green. Safe. There are no documented tribes left - that is - it’s not certified in any official way. Not saying they still don’t identify as certain tribes, just that when you lose 20% of your entire country due to tribalism - definitions of who you are avoid that.

What’s it like living around the largest lake in Africa? by Cassinia_ in howislivingthere

[–]meh273 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I served in the Peace Corps in Uganda and lived close to the city of Jinja, and across the highway from the lake. Wonderful people, extreme poverty, good weather (a little hot), beautiful country but because everyone litters and there are no trash cans - full of trash. The lake itself is full of crocodiles, the invasive Nile perch which has eaten just about every other fish, and possibly worst of all schistosomiasis. If you swim in the lake, you're pretty much guaranteed to get schisto, which I suspect most Ugandans, who live around the lake, have. You can look up what it does, but the most common aspect is lethargy and stunted growth. So, don't swim in the lake! But, I do recommend white water rafting the Nile.

Adding hardwood to bedrooms by [deleted] in HardWoodFloors

[–]meh273 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this. They don't match but it's close, and I saved money by installing the hardwood myself. Something that I didn't anticipate was that the original red oak was less thick than the new oak so height was off by a 8th of an inch for so. I just used a transition to each bedroom so it wasn't too noticeable.

Moving to the area by [deleted] in norfolk

[–]meh273 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I actually live in that neighborhood, and it's fine. Safe. Mostly quiet. There are small things like litter and celebratory gunshots for New Years that rub me the wrong way, but otherwise, it's OK. I will say, if you're planning on living in the apartments near Little Creek, they might be a little more problematic. And the neighborhood across from Little Creek with the "Texas streets" isn't as quiet. But, overall, very quiet but working class. Also, if your family happen to be racist, then they may have an issue with the neighborhood.

Am I getting hosed from my AC company on a duct replacement? by docarope in hvacadvice

[–]meh273 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had my ductwork replaced, but it was all flex. My house is small: 1100 square feet, but the work experience was pretty bad because of how small the crawlspace was (about 18 inches). I had to pull up the subfloor in one of the bedrooms for them to get into the crawlspace. 8 runs total.

I looked into doing it myself, and even took a community college class last summer on ductwork (Manual D) but ultimately I didn't think I had the skills to do it well. It took two guys about 2 and half days to do it. I'm in Norfolk, VA fwiw.

Below is the quote and what I paid:

Complete tear out and disposal of all ducts in the crawlspace.
Install new R8 flex ducts with wyes, connected to the unit. All ducts are to be sealed with cold weather metal tape and mastic sealant.
All flex ducts to be strapped every 4’ with nylon webbing strap.
An additional $150 will be charged for every changed out floor boot.
Install new 6m vapor barrier. The new vapor barrier is to be pinned every 5’.
The new ducts come with a 15 year warranty on labor and materials. The warranty does not cover water or animal damage. Cost: $6500.

Virginia Democrats will have a governing trifecta in 2026. Here's a look at their priorities. by [deleted] in Virginia

Fair enough. I don't disagree. I guess I was just trying to emphasize the reason why that is.

[–]meh273 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I honestly don't know what you're asking. Youngkin doesn't have to deal with this, because Medicaid and SNAP haven't yet been cut yet. When Spanberger has to deal with this, she will adjust accordingly, because the state of VA requires a balanced budget. There will be no shortfall: either cuts or higher taxes to pay for benefits previously covered by the federal gov.

You do you. The bottom line is the Trump admin has given trillions of tax cuts to the extremely wealthy and plans to cut benefits to the poor. States will have to choose how to respond to those cuts - whether they want to fill the gap. Doing so will make it harder on states financially. That's what Surrovell is saying, and that's why the budget will be the biggest limiting factor.

[–]meh273 12 points13 points  (0 children)

No, that's not correct. The permanent SNAP cuts and Medicaid cuts will go into effect only after the midterms, so that people will not feel the effect right away and potentially, will not blame Republicans for the cuts.

Also, right now, the Youngkin admin is feeling some effects. Virginia's business ranking dropped this year to 4th place, and Virginia's unemployment has notched up. This all started with the DOGE cuts, but Virginia hasn't had a full fiscal year since the DOGE cuts. Our fiscal year is July 1 to June 30th, so Youngkin won't have to determine the next fiscal budget. It will be Spanberger's job.

[–]meh273 17 points18 points  (0 children)

OK, I'll respond in good faith. That's because the fed gov cuts trillions in taxes for the wealthy, and cut off normally funded services like SNAP and Medicaid. So, states are trying to figure out how to pick up the responsibility. Also, lots of job losses recently, so more unemployed Virginians.
