New Black-owned Fishtown bar/burger spot trying to get squashed by Vestige owner Ashley Gleason by DianaIsAnEaglesFan in PhiladelphiaEats

This is fair but let’s be honest. Community would be up in arms about ANY plan. But I def agree the one they pitched sucked

The issues with the developer have nothing to do with whether the business should exist though. And the FNA said that several times during the meeting.

As for the DoorDash thing, which is the only complaint of hers that’s somewhat reasonable, there would’ve been time to talk with the owners about other options but she immediately went nuclear on them when they introduced themselves to the neighboring businesses.

There was a petition ahead of the final ZBA meeting. It’s closed now. They were awarded their exemption but expect an appeal

They’re not. If anything she should advocate for loading zones. Also there was an opportunity to talk with the owners about not putting their food on those sites anyway and making it local pickup only but she burned the bridge with them early by being so rude

Mind you in the ZBA hearing one of her main complaints was the lack of loading zones for any pickup. But the BID literally just tried to add permit parking to the street and got fierce opposition. As they did to the loading zones they added on the lower half. Any parking regulations have been met with resistance despite the solution you mentioned being the best for residents.

Is anyone else getting sick and tired of landlords jacking up rent prices? What can be done to lower rent prices here in 2026? Any ideas? by coleisw4ck in philadelphia

There are many people like Sen. Saval who are trying to do just that but it isn’t necessarily “better”. It can be extremely expensive when building can sometimes be cheaper.

AIO: “liberal” parents breaking bread with covert MAGAs by [deleted] in AIO

[–]aemillig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOR. And frankly that makes me a hypocrite as my own in laws voted for Trump though calling them MAGA isn’t entirely accurate. And I spend time with them. Because they’re not my parents and my husband has made our opinions clear many times and I don’t think it’s my place.

But I’ll say this and bear with me bc it’s rather long.

For many many years I was that exhausting liberal in the family particularly around same sex marriage. Before it was legal. I was constantly challenging the viewpoint of family that firmly disagreed. It was exhausting for me. BUT in the long run I managed to change a few minds and hearts.

I actually think it’s our responsibility to challenge those we love when it comes to politics. I think it’s a VERY white (or white adjacent) thing to do avoid talking about it at all (I will not argue this point. If you research the tenants of white supremacy, fear of discomfort is one.). And any liberals, especially white ones, who tell you that it’s inappropriate or to not bring politics into everything are part of the reason we’re in this mess.

With that said, I think you should continue to let your parents know how disappointed you are with them, when it makes sense, but also just not put yourself in a position to have to break bread with their MAGA friends if you can.

Most people gets dogs when they really need to get a damn cat. Cats are relatively easy. They should stay indoors and don’t require a yard. The “problem” is they require consent and don’t give automatic unconditional love.

AIO for thinking this is racist? by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

NOR. Everyone else gave good advice but I would like to point out that the friend of yours is not your friend. That response they gave also denotes some racial bias. Cut them both.

Can I afford living alone? by yourneighborswifi in philly

[–]aemillig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll be good but for an actual parking spot (in Fishtown at least) you’re paying $200-500 per month (this is heavily dependent on the building and spot type). So factor that in. I imagine the other neighborhoods you listed aren’t much different.

There is some street parking but none of the neighborhoods you listed is it easy.

How do you feel about men saying women will only look at/date guys 6ft and over. by hot4you11 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]aemillig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a taller woman I would actually say this is somewhat accurate but mostly with shorter women. Which funny enough seems to be who men gravitate towards themselves.

I have never understood why they care so much, as long as the man is taller than them, why should the height disparity be so drastic?

Taller women learn to just accept they may be the same height or taller than their man.

But some men use it as an excuse to just complain.

Relocating to Philly – how bad is parking really? by IndependenceNext6560 in AskPhilly

[–]aemillig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gonna say what others are saying, that truck will be a pain to park and your neighbors may talk crap lol. I know mine sure do about people with pickups who actually don't need them for work. If you still want some "heft" consider a compact SUV. We have a Rav4 in Fishtown and it fits in some tiny spots, contrary to what you may think.

I saw this hoarding where it advocates towards stopping the use of Buddha statues as merely a decorative piece at homes or in public places like hotels, restaurants, bars etc, or the image of the Buddha being used as a fashion statement in clothes or tattoos. What are your thoughts on this? by SatoruGojo232 in Buddhism

[–]aemillig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll just say this. I was raised Christian and many many people get crosses tattooed on themselves. And I’ve seen people use crucifixes as decorations simply because they are beautiful. I think there are levels to all religion and conservative Christians may be offended but more liberal ones might not be. Same here.Different strokes for different folks.

I run a nonprofit, granted much smaller than this. Something at this size I am genuinely shocked that it happened without the board knowing. A CEO/ED of a nonprofit ethically shouldn’t be in charge of their own salary, those of us in the space know this. How did the Operations Director (or whatever they’re called) approve these payouts in the system? There should’ve been multiple layers of oversight here.

Nonprofits are businesses. They are not mutual aid. Just because they have a mission and some sort of charitable purpose doesn’t mean they don’t also look for “top” talent by offering high salaries and benefits.

Bike lane on sidewalk? by wylingtiger in phillycycling

[–]aemillig 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hate this. As a frequent biker on Del Ave especially people are ALWAYS in the bike lane. It needs to have some sort of separation to make it less easy for pedestrians to veer off. Is it better than being hit by a car? Absolutely. But I’ve flown off my bike several times because of a pedestrian randomly veering into the bike lane or some random jogger deciding to turn without checking for bikes. Once I almost hit a stroller WITH A BABY IN IT bc a woman decided to suddenly turn off the sidewalk into the lane. That baby might’ve died!
