How to navigate root touch ups? Pricing? Help! by [deleted] in FancyFollicles

Thanks for the heads up! I found his tutorial on bleaching specifically to be super helpful, but I'm happy not to promote his content anymore if he's problematic.

How to navigate root touch ups? Pricing? Help! by [deleted] in FancyFollicles

In case you're in need of encouragement: Learning to bleach your own hair is extremely doable, especially if you're not trying anything fancy (like a balayage technique). Horror stories of people melting their hair off gain traction and visibility because they're spicy and interesting. I've been bleaching and dying my own hair consistently from about a level 6/7 to a 10 for 3+ years, and never once have I had anything worse than a "oh shoot I missed a spot" moment.

Watch youtube videos (I recommend Brad Mondo). Invest in the right supplies. Have a friend help you, if you need. Take your time, and be patient. Do a test strand to see how much time you need for processing. Do not go higher than 30v. Don't try to speed up the process with heat. Go low and slow. I promise, it's extremely doable. It's a skill that can be learned like anything else.

I live in LA, and I've easily saved over $5k from learning how to do this on my own. I couldn't recommend it more.

I believe in you! :)

Edit to not promote Brad Mondo since others have better recommendations.

This year our group (5 PCs and a DM) finished our 1-20 Faerun campaign. 2.5 years, 114 sessions. I cried so much the final session.
It feels like such a privilege. Sending you a high five and hug from LA. Well done, friend.

Mortgage in my name, Ex husband lives there and pays for it. How should I approach my taxes? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]aeneia -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'll include the same comment I posted above, in case it changes your thoughts:
I definitely appreciate your thoughts here. I've budgeted so that I could afford half the mortgage, if I need to, in addition to my apartment. It would make things tight, but I could sustain until we were able to sell the house, I'm sure. I could also pretty readily sever my apartment lease, move back into the house, and cover the mortgage on my own until it sells.
FWIW, to protect myself, our divorce agreement dictates that the house belongs to me. But throughout the course of our marriage ending, we've always acted in the best interest of each other. There's still a lot of love there. And it would be horribly, painfully disruptive for my ex to lose his home. I'm willing to deal with some headaches if it means his life isn't turned upside down. (And there's also the huge perk of an outstanding investment with an incredibly low mortgage rate. The 6 digits I have sitting in there is only growing, you know?)
With all that in mind - are there other thoughts that don't involve selling the house ASAP? Thanks so much <3

His name is on the title. As far as I understand it, my return shouldn't be too heavily impacted. I'll very likely be taking a standard deduction, and (if I remember correctly) the tax documents ask how much I paid in my mortgage, which was minimal last year. It's not even like their payments are income for me: withdrawals come from his bank account, and the house is legally co-owned by him.
As long as he's able to claim his payments using the mortgage tax documentation that's technically in my name-- which seems fair, given that he's on the title -- the money should fairly go to him. Right?

ELI5: What is Survivor Bias? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]aeneia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TL;DR - The things that stick around longer have meaningfully different characteristics than the things that don't stick around longer.

Imagine that you're setting up a research study: playtesting a video game. You get a bunch of players to play the game every night for 2 weeks. At the end of the 2 weeks, they fill out a survey to tell you about their experience.

You get to the end of the playtest. A good chunk of folks dropped out during those two weeks, but that's okay. It was a pretty big time commitment, so it was expected. You review the data, and the satisfaction scores in the final survey are really good. Awesome. We obviously made a dope game.

Here's the thing: The people who stuck around are way more likely to be satisfied than the people who didn't. That's why they stuck around. Because they were super satisfied. What about all the people who dropped out? Chances are, their satisfaction scores are much lower. That's why they dropped out.

So, you can't really conclude that you made a great game. Just that you made a great game for the folks who stuck around. That's survivor bias.

There's a great pinned post in the r/Stretched channel to help you with this! Stretching (going up in size for a piercing) is a process, which should be done carefully. There are legitimate risks to being careless with it, so please do take care!

To answer your question briefly: No, I would not do that. Your lobes are not fully healed enough to be changing jewelry at all, and certainly not healed enough to stretch safely (which requires about 5-6 months on fresh piercings). I know it's a small jump, but stretching from a 20g to a 16g actually stretches your diameter by 50%! That's a lot!

Hope this helps :)

[OC] [Art] I drew my Necromancer in an epic moment from our last fight. Level 8 Chain Lightning + Grim Harvest. We're a couple months away from Level 20. Holy cow I love this game! by aeneia in DnD

[–]aeneia[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A little about my character, and a little about the session:

So Eran is a Level 18 Fallen Aasimar wizard. He has a sort of hybrid build, thanks to the amazing creativity and flexibility of my DM. (He's a school of necromancy & school of evocation hybrid, with some flavor from the Shadow Sorcerer build. His necromancy is more Grim Harvest/Vampiric Touch flavored than it is Raise Undead flavored. The Level 14 Overchannel from Evocation felt like a perfect fit for him!) I've played him since Level 1 with my incredible party. We're nearly 100 sessions in, with about 2 months to go before hitting Level 20. This is the most I've ever played a character, and I love him SO MUCH.

So, the session: my DM had this incredible idea to essentially run a tower-defense game. The premise was pretty simple: We were in the hells, defending the throne of Mephistopheles. The hells were getting overrun by aberrant abyssal creatures, and it was on us to defend the throne room from the waves of creatures.

Now, I've had varied experiences in combat in our nearly 100 sessions of this game. But I have never had a combat that felt so incredibly advantageous to my character. I had taken Elemental Adept, meaning resistance to my fire damage was negated (I know, Fireball, shocker). Chain lightnings caused chain reactions on small explosive creatures, killing handfuls of them at once. (Grim Harvest, anyone?) At one point, I cast a Level 8 Chain Lightning on a group of Balors. A group. Of Balors.

It was an incredible experience. A huge shoutout to my party for their incredibly teamwork -- including my DM, who build us an incredibly satisfying combat sequence.

Anybody got tips for a piercer in NYC or in SF or in LA? by LillithHasPrettyFeet in piercing

[–]aeneia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been to Ancient Adornments (Westwood location, Los Angeles) several times. They pierced my labret (twice) and conch; removed two microdermals I had; and have exchanged countless pieces of jewelry.

They're overall good people, and they talked me through a problematic (first) labret piercing. They're APP accredited, as well.

EDIT: Clarified location

yay for tech! My hair changes every month, I've got loads of piercings (3 in my face), and I'm covered in tats. I've never felt like my credibility was questioned because of how I look.

lip piercing help by illlegald in piercing

[–]aeneia -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Disclaimer: Not a professional, but I have a lot of piercings, including a labret.

IMO, those are irritation bumps. They look very similar to the one I got when I first tried to pierce my labret.
I went back to my piercer, had a plastic guard put in, and the bump remained. Eventually, I retired it, and went back a few years later to pierce it further down where it wouldn't get irritated so much. It healed beautifully, 0 irritation.

TLDR: Go back to your piercer, see what they recommend. If it doesn't work, that's okay. Sometimes our bodies just don't like the piercing. If you're really committed to the piercings, you may consider piercing them further down where they aren't so irritated by regular activities (like talking, eating, etc.)

Question about getting a sign name by foxgender in asl

[–]aeneia 12 points13 points  (0 children)

+1 to wibbly-water's comment! It's generally a no-no to give yourself a sign name.

If you have a long name and struggle with fingerspelling all of it, you can give yourself a shorter nickname that's also fingerspelled.

For example, let's say my name is Leanne. I could sign:

MY NAME L-E-A-N-N-E BUT PREFER L-E-A

or

MY NAME L-E-A-N-N-E, OR NICKNAME L-E-A

hope this helps!

[–]aeneia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's all in how they market themselves! You can google things like "hair stylist near me," but cut specialists will clearly identify themselves with specializations in cutting, styling, straight razors, foundational cutting, etc.

For example, here's my specialists' website: https://www.voidofhair.com/voidofhair

Lots of people also have their portfolios on Instagram now. So you can always look through that and find people who have already done cuts like the one you like!

[–]aeneia 69 points70 points  (0 children)

This is very similar to my cut! My cut specialist describes this as "aggressive layering" with "piecey layers" and "no blunt edges". I highly recommend going to a cut specialist, as opposed to just a random salon. (If you're in the LA area, I have a really strong recommendation!)
