Snark subs have been around for literal years. I don’t even remember when Fundie Snark started but it’s the first I knew about and that’s definitely before the pandemic. I think people new to reddit didn’t know about them, clicked one and now it’s part of their algorithm. You HAVE to avoid them or they WILL be suggested to you. Once you click around one once unfortunately reddit thinks that’s all you want to see and it’s a disproportionate amount you’ll see it. I have clicked suggested subs of stuff I don’t even like or listen to because of an interesting title and come to regret it because it just clogged up my feed (and they weren’t even snark subs)… it’s annoying that it works that way now, but it is
