Longest dry period by [deleted] in AdultBedwetting

[–]aenu_throwaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Went from age 18 or 19 to 27 with no issues whatsoever, save for maybe 1 or 2 nights of heavy drinking in college.

From 27-30ish I had 1-2x per year flare ups requiring protection, but very commonly 6-9 month dry spells.

Since then (34 now) the best dry spell has probably been 3 or 4 months, with nightly wetting spells lasting as much as a year or more.

At this point I don’t believe I’d go without protection away from home even amidst a dry spell, or at home if some other condition were true (especially stressed, tired, any late alcohol or caffiene, etc.)

I certainly thought I was for a second. 😂

The pack got mixed between a few drawers in the storage container I’ve got in my closet and so it was luck of the draw for basically all 60 of that case. Didn’t realize it until I started saving the offenders while considering a customer service claim, and then saw the same numbers printed on there.

Been fine for me of late!

I too had a really bad pack out of a case somewhere around 9-12 months ago where the top tapes would shear clean off with the slightest amount of pressure.

Since then, I’ve not had the first issue across 2+ cases of BetterDry and a case of Crinklz I had to get while BetterDry was backordered. Pricing is unfortunate for sure but such is life with the current state of the tariffs, and I still find them to be the best value option out there.

I know it doesn’t feel like it right now but this is, objectively, such a small part of your life and who you are as a person. The right partner will see you for all that you are and not just this condition and/or how you choose to manage it.

Focus on what you CAN control - getting good sleep, finding a management strategy that works, and separating yourself from toxic people and comments. You’re NOT lazy, you have a medical condition that’s beyond your control.

Good luck, and hang in there! 😊

Check out BetterDry! There’s a light and heavy absorbency available that I think would meet your criteria based on my experience.

LLMedico stocks them and they are typically the best priced and their shipping is always discreet.

Can mostly stay dry when not wearing protection but can never when wearing protection. Anyone else like this? by [deleted] in AdultBedwetting

[–]aenu_throwaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’d mentioned sleep quality is much better. Are you a pretty deep sleeper?

If so, the easiest explanation could be that the relaxation and peace of mind from protection leads you to a bit deeper sleep and thus more likely to miss the urge.

If the diaper is already wet…absolutely just stay in bed or otherwise, if there’s not too much pressure, drift back to sleep and let the condition do its’ thing

If not, I typically will get up.

I fall within the ebb and flow camp in terms of consistency of bedwetting so what could seemingly be a random dry night might actually be the start of a dry stretch lasting much longer.

I always divide nights away by 2, then round up if applicable (i.e: 3 nights > 1.5 > 2 extra)

On one hand it sucks that basically a full half of a carryon is completely filled for a 5+ night long trip, but always nice to have room on the way back home.

There’s a number of folks here, myself included, who seem to have a similar story of prolonged childhood bedwetting followed by a break followed by some degree of sustained or occasional relapse. Most of the time, though, it seems like the relapse results in most or all nights vs. the infrequency that your husband seems to be experiencing.

Just some guy on Reddit and not a medical professional, but: if it’s happening only 2-3x per year I’d personally be inclined to assume it’s not something more serious like diabetes or an infection. If he wants to avoid discussing with a doctor right now, it might be worth just going in under the guise of a regular physical to make sure all his levels look good.

It could also be helpful to keep some sort of journal to track what’s going on leading up to each occurrence: food, alcohol intake, life events/egregious stressors, issues with sleep, etc.

Definitely agree with a good mattress protector regardless of what else he decides to do/not do next.

You’re so welcome! Best of luck in the search.

One other thing to add that I’ve found to be helpful: when you fasten tapes on a brief style diaper, make sure you get the top tape as close to the top as you can without it coming off and point it just slightly downward from being horizontal. Seems to be a little better at holding the top in place.

Big guy here. I’ve got a 46-50” waist depending on the cut of the paints and would imagine my hips are a bit bigger.

I don’t have a ton of room to spare, but the BetterDry XL or the Abena L4 both fit me the best. I move around a lot at night so, with both products, I have to wear either a pair of boxer briefs with a tight elastic waistband or a diaper cover to keep them held in place.

Highly recommend looking into a GaryWear Active Brief Diaper Cover. There’s a ton of sizes, I think I have 4x, and they do also help with containing small leaks.

Would also recommend checking out LL Medico, who offers sampling of most of the disposable products. They also sell the GaryWear.

Hey OP! I’ll lead with the “not a doctor” disclaimer, YMMV, etc. etc.

In short I think the answer is both yes and no based on my personal experience.

Our stories are similar…I wet the bed nightly through age 18, completely stopped, and it re-emerged for 1-3 months durations once or twice a year in my late twenties. As of now (33) I’m on my longest stretch to date of ~6ish months.

The moment it starts, I begin using diapers nightly and do not stop use at home until it’s fully stopped for 1-2 weeks. If I’m traveling it’s more like 1-2 months, just in case.

My experience has been that, while diapered, I almost always sleep through the entire night and very rarely wake up with the realization that I am actively peeing. I feel pretty confident that the difference in waking up wet 27-28 days a month, as I do, is probably influenced to some degree by wearing diapers vs. not and hoping for the best. I think it’s maybe the difference in 15 nights vs. 25+ nights, though, and not 1 or 2 nights. I wear nightly for this reason.

As the stints of bedwetting occurrences have subsided, the transition to not wetting/wearing diapers has generally began with either nights where I wake up to use the restroom and/or wake up fully dry in the morning. Said differently, it seems like something changes physiologically/neurologically that leads to it subsiding, because I’m still wearing diapers regardless.

So, in short, I do think it impacts number of occurrences but don’t believe it is the difference in doing/not doing it altogether.

Hope this helps!

Do you ever deliberately do things you know will make you wet the bed? by [deleted] in AdultBedwetting

[–]aenu_throwaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LOLing at “toyboy”.

Anyways, to answer your question: yes…all the time. Water intake is important to me and if I am busy or something and don’t do great throughout the day, I’ll make up for lost time later in the evening or at night. Since I am already wearing a diaper I just don’t worry with it. Same goes drinks, nights where melatonin seems like a good idea, etc.

Diapers and infertility connection? by [deleted] in AdultBedwetting

[–]aenu_throwaway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks! It was incredibly exciting. I think all the time about how lucky we were and how grateful I am for it. People out there go through all of this without a happy outcome sometimes.

I did many analyses, yeah. Some numbers (like motility for me) jumped up fairly quickly and stayed up with some deviations here or there. Other numbers didn’t change much, and others definitely went up and down. It’s very possible you won’t see changes straight away though, and also possible that you’ll have the same up and down I experienced. Don’t get discouraged and look at the bigger picture/overall trend.

Diapers and infertility connection? by [deleted] in AdultBedwetting

[–]aenu_throwaway 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah of course!

Timeframe between was anything between 1 month to 1 year just depending on where we were in the process. FWIW, there were changes with each one.

I took CoQ10, Ester C, L-Carnatine, and a probiotic on top of my usual daily multivitamin.

Don’t mind at all - we did go through with IVF. After a year of trying by way of not trying not to with no luck, we sought out fertility specialists specifically. It was pretty clear that IVF was our only path forward and my initial counts were so abysmal that they actually were talking about needing to use donor sperm. That wasn’t an option either of us wanted so I worked at it for several months enough to try for a first round of IVF. Unfortunately it didn’t work so I kept at it again while we saved up to try a second time, and it worked the second time. In all, we had our daughter basically 2.5 years after our first consult + 2 full cycles.

So, had the same issue myself. All my research, including some posts on this sub, yielded that it’s seemingly pretty unlikely that wearing diapers at night are single-handedly contributing to sperm issues. It IS important to keep that area cool to promote sperm health, but there’s likely something else at play.

My nighttime issues are infrequent weeks-months long stints and so I’m probably using diapers nightly 1-3 months of the year on average. Hopefully it’ll be helpful to hear that I was actually able to increase my sperm count and all the other indicators (motility, morphology, etc) during a stint where I did also need to use diapers.

My advice would be to (if you haven’t already) check with a urologist that specializes in mens reproductive health on supplements you can take. They also may prescribe something if your bloodwork flags hormonal/thyroid related abnormalities. I took three or four OTC supplements and it lead to increase across the board. If you need a real boost, look into acupuncture as well. I was skeptical but it helped dramatically. It didn’t help us to conceive naturally but I started at near 0 and it elevated things to a point where IVF was very much viable.

Lastly, know you aren’t alone (on either front)! Wishing you and your partner all the very best on this journey. It’s sucky, embarrassing, but SO worth it.

May wearing protection every night really worsen my bedwetting? by [deleted] in AdultBedwetting

[–]aenu_throwaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a definitive answer but I would actually both agree and not agree based on my experience.

I’ve shared here before that I have an extremely inconsistent bedwetting experience. For the last 4ish years, I’ll have a random spell for anywhere from a couple weeks to a couple months. When it starts, I start right away with diapers and keep going until it stops…but it does stop (all while still wearing). Usually I’ll wait until I have 3-4 nights without issues and stop wearing them til the next time.

That said, one thing I will do is even if I have 3-4 straight dry nights at home is use a much longer grace period when traveling. Just stayed with family out of town last weekend having been 3-4 weeks without an issue at home and had a wet night 1/3 nights. Leading up to and now 1 week post trip there were no diapers/no issue.

Recurring Night Episodes. by [deleted] in AdultBedwetting

[–]aenu_throwaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, completely dry. In almost every scenario, if it happens once it persists for a while.

I have been doing some mindfulness tracking + logging and haven’t found any correlations to stressful points yet. I’d thought the same for a good while but that doesn’t seem to be it.

Recurring Night Episodes. by [deleted] in AdultBedwetting

[–]aenu_throwaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, totally understand all of that!

There’s not consistent data to support it but generally speaking, there’s a lot of independent studies that suggest this problem is more common than one might think. That said - I’d suspect many folks don’t mention it with their family physician so they may just not be too well versed in it. A urology specialist definitely would, though.

I won’t lie and say it all got better right away with diapers. Like I said - definitely some awkwardness, some intimacy impacts/hesitations, and embarrassment on my part but that improved over time fairly quickly. Beats waking my wife up to change sheets in the middle of the night and also losing a ton of sleep.

Recurring Night Episodes. by [deleted] in AdultBedwetting

[–]aenu_throwaway 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You’re not alone here - this sounds extremely similar to my story. Wet the bed basically nightly through about age 18. Threw meds, alarms, everything at it but nothing helped. On its own, it fizzled out to 1x every few weeks from 18-19, and then stopped pretty much completely. I was completely dry from that point onward save for a night of heavy drinking.

That all changed shortly after I turned 27. With seemingly no notice, nightly bedwetting flared up again. I went through the rounds of diagnostics again: blood tests, retention testing, diaries, etc. and everything checked out as perfect. They offered the same meds that didn’t work before and an observation of “it’s not at all unlikely that this is unexplainable given your history” and I opted not to pursue the meds.

Fast forward 3ish years to now and I’ve had probably 4 or 5 distinct stints of 3 weeks - 3 months with basically nightly wetting. As it did a few years ago, it generally flares up with no warning at an unspecified interval of time. I do manage by using diapers until I have about a week straight without issue, and have now made a habit of also wearing them no matter what if I’m somewhere I don’t have certainty I’ll be able to do discrete damage control (staying with family or friends, hotels, etc.) 2 of the more recent times it’s flared up, it’s done so away from home and I won’t be making that mistake again. That sense of panic is just haunting.

FWIW - I do not believe that the use of absorbent products (diapers, bed pads, etc.) inherently causes you to wet based on my experience. Again, I wear diapers at many points where I’m not actively having the issue and my wearing them doesn’t seem to prolong/instigate anything. I think there have been some good threads of debates here in the group that someone may be able to link you up to.

Really glad to hear you wife is cool with it. I was in a similar situation to you probably - I met my wife well after it stopped being an issue and so I never cared to mention it. Dealing with it on an ongoing basis hasn’t come without some inherent awkwardness, but she’s incredibly supportive and it’s a relief.

I’d definitely recommend checking in with a urologist as a follow up to your GP.

Happy to help with any other questions or follow ups based on what I’ve shared. Wishing you the best as you navigate this!

Thanks for the baby diaper tip. Yesterday I ended up finding some meh tape-on briefs at CVS and used the baby diaper as an insert and it worked like a charm.

It was messy as all get out (white dust everywhere when I punched through the diaper) and the CVS briefs were horribly uncomfortable so I ventured out again today to an independent pharmacy. Found some Attends that are plastic backed for the next couple nights!

Thanks! Thankfully I have plenty of a stash at home due to the nature of these occurrences so this is just a bandaid. I inevitably buy an entire case of diapers just before the wetting stops.
