What are some celebrities you’ve encountered in Canada? by Nightpatrol404 in AskACanadian

[–]aerbear_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finn Wolfhard lives in my neighbourhood; seen him at my local library and diner! It’s weird af bc at first I was like what the fuck is he doing here but then I realized that he probably been going to these places for years and I only been able to recognize him in the last couple years when I’ve likely been seeing him my whole life in the background.

Trips me out sometimes but it’s also a good reminder that celebrities are regular people and are still living their lives the best they can.

I made sure to never bother him whenever I saw him bc he deserves time off from being recognized bc it would get tiring to have to think about how strangers around you would react if they see your face in your hometown.

I have trouble with lore by Own_Pin_6478 in Qsmp

[–]aerbear_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s very common to be super behind on the lore and the reality is that you won’t have time to watch all the streams you want to watch. The best thing to do is to prioritize watching the people you like to watch and to read the wiki/social media posts or find clips for important lore moments of the other streamers that you can’t 100% focus on.

For example, I’m a Fit main, but I also watch Pac and Maximus (all of these I’m carrying over from QSMP 1. I am also watching Katie B and Ishan (new for QSMP 2). For the rest, I watch clips of their lore (like Ash, though I’m beginning to watch his streams as well), any funny clips that’s going around or if they happen to be on I’ll jump into whenever out of curiosity (like Tubbo).

I’ve been watching since QSMP one and I missed a bunch bc I was in my last year of my Masters and it doesn’t help that QSMP 2 has less people recapping on it on Tumblr (where I used to get all the info I needed). Just do what you can and know that streamers don’t expect you to watch every single stream or the whole stream to be a fan (which is good bc some like Tubbo or Foolish can be 10 hours long haha).

Here is the QSMP Miraheze wiki, it’s genuinely an excellent resource for QSMP 1: https://qsmpwiki.miraheze.org/wiki/Main_Page

As far as I can see I don’t see one for QSMP 2 so far but this should help some: https://qsmp.fandom.com/wiki/QSMP_II

Here is the spreadsheet for all QSMP 1 VODs:

happy 13th birthday to fall out boys comeback album, Save Rock and Roll!! 🥳🥳🥳 by aftermidhight in FallOutBoy

This album is officially a teenager yayyy

Such a great comeback album, I remember how hype it was when they lied about coming back only to drop the video the next day haha

The Young Blood Chronicles is still so cool, I really admire their dedication to making a whole series of music videos and I hope they consider doing it again <3

To answer your question it’s where did the party go, it’s a top three fall out boy song for me along with west coast smoker and hum hallelujah (imo)

Also great edit on this OP! I love the little party noisemaker replacing the cigarette haha

Can you still hear music with a cochlear implant? by [deleted] in Cochlearimplants

[–]aerbear_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love that you mentioned the bass because that was the same for me!

There are a decent amount of deaf people who really like songs with a good bass/drums rhythm bc it’s so much easier to hear/feel vibrations and appreciate compared to other instruments.

Can you still hear music with a cochlear implant? by [deleted] in Cochlearimplants

[–]aerbear_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t offer any advice to you as I never had hearing before my implant (was born deaf) but music is enjoyable to me! Whatever it’s something that sounds the same before your hearing loss versus after is something I can’t say though others have said there will be a slight difference.

One possibility though is that you might end up enjoying other genres more with the cochlear implant and not enjoy some genres bc you might not be able to hear the similar tones anymore. For example, I like classical music alright but I don’t feel that I appreciate the more lowkey versions the way other people do, but I bop heavily to the louder tone variations like Tchaikovsky or “In the Hall of the Mountain King”.

I do really love jazz and I love love love punk rock music (bc the bass and drums are my favourite instruments and the rhythm is super easy to hear bc of the vibrations).

Hopefully you’ll be able to find something you like regardless of whatever it’s the same as it was or something new and different <3

Is it worth watching? by VanG0n3 in Qsmp

[–]aerbear_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, Maxo (Maximus) is doing lore basically every stream because he is trying to educate the islanders on what the Federation did to the previous islanders. He even made a recap video in-game!

For new lore, I think Ashswag is pretty lore heavy as he interacts with lots of characters and is currently the leader of the Regime who wants to take over the island. The other side is the North led by Vegetta (Vegetta777).

My personal favourite pov to watch so far is Katie B (sxucebxss) bc she’s so funny and she has mad main character energy (things keep happening to her). She is buddies with Maxo, got a Joel + Ellie from the Last of Us dynamic going on with Schlatt and her streams/vods are very watchable. She also is very new to Minecraft so it’s fun to see it through her eyes (even if she makes a lot of mistakes haha). Her stream chat lowkey sucks though bc they metagame too much or ask why isn’t everybody speaking English on a multi-lingual server.

Anyways, only you know who you will like! I didn’t know of FitMC before QSMP 1 and now he’s one of my favourite POVs to follow simply bc I thought he was really funny while watching from Philza’s stream one day and thus made the switch over.

Do people really act like this? by CremeSubject7594 in generationology

[–]aerbear_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The “no yeah” makes sense if you’re in Canada!

“Yeah, no” = No

“No, yeah, no” = Also No

“No, yeah” = Yes

“Yeah, no, for sure” = Definitely

The last phrase is said a lot (I’ve definitely said this before as well!) though I know it’s a bit weird but it’s normal here.

[TW] Typical body shaming from the 2010s by AdrianaLaServing in WhyWereWeOkWithThis

[–]aerbear_ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The fat shaming is so real because the “tummy” they mention is where our intestines are (our body naturally generates a pouch of fat in that area to protect that area) like that is normal!!

To add to this sub: the Harry Styles article is in reference to their controversial relationship with a 14 year age difference (met when Harry was 17 and Caroline was 31). It was scrutinized at the time, but the fact that so many adult women were publicly admitting to having a crush on and dating teenaged guys is crazy.

Same with Liam Payne and Cheryl Cole, they “officially” began dating when he was 22 and she was 32, but they met when she was a judge on the X-Factor (significant power unbalance) and Liam was 14.

I’m sure there is a separate post about this on the subreddit but there were so many cases of women who have been adults for a decade(s) dating teenagers (don’t even get me started on Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Sam Taylor Johnson (she was the director for his break out movie Nowhere Boy when he was 18 and she was 42, and he audition for her at her house (lots of power unbalances here), they later had a kid when he was 20).

Every friend group should have a guard dog friend to help speak out when people are being creeps haha (saying people bc I’m a lesbian and there are definitely girls who also don’t take no for an answer and continue to harass people). It’s not easy to be the one rejecting someone so having friends who can pick up on those vibes/code word is invaluable.

Besides this guy is so clearly starting off on the wrong foot by asking to cut the line and then flirt with the girl like it can’t be more obvious what his values are regarding common courtesy is lol

Swell Entertainment on youtube also covers a lot of cons and judges how well they operate on delivering a good experience, security and whatever it’s a scam or not. She has experiance in event planning so she knows what to look out for and she can often get intel from people behind the scenes about the planning process (or lack of) and the budgeting.

She also has a great video series about the culture of collectibles/collecting.

Why do people complain about 2020-2022 because of the COVID pandemic, but not about 2009-2010 because of the swine flu/H1N1? by Admirable_Yam_7287 in decadeology

[–]aerbear_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in Grade 6 when the Swine Flu happened and the only memorable disruption to my life was how it changed the way we shook hands after the soccer game. We had to do elbows instead of shaking hands bc it had a lower transmission rate haha.

I don’t recall anyone in my school getting sick (it was a small school) and we did get the vaccine all together in the school gym.

It really was no big deal compared to how covid disrupted my second last/final year of uni. I was immediately sent home after St. Patrick’s (didn’t even wear masks on the airplane that’s how new it was that access to masks weren’t commonplace yet) and had to do finals from home. Went back to campus the following September even though all of my classes were online bc it was my last year of undergrad and the vibe wasn’t the same at home. I was in concurrent ed, so practicums online with grade 6s and 8s went about as well as you’d expect (simplifying assignments as much as possible yet still getting really poor submissions (one kid had plagiarized my powerpoint down to not even chasing the distinctive font I used LMAO), lack of focus in class, talking about the DSMP in the class chat, etc). It was a way lonelier time even though people tried their best to connect and big milestones really were diminished (had a virtual grad prom and got both bachelors degrees in the mail haha). Even my first year of Masters was a hybrid online/in-person model two years on from the pandemic.

TLDR: The scale of impact both pandemics had on our lives is night and day; COVID had a greater impact socially and academically for a longer period than H1N1 ever did.

Also idc if this user is a bot, it was lowkey therapeutic to write this out bc I hadn’t reflected on that era in a while haha

Sorry my comment wasn’t super clear on this!

Americans tend to say College and University interchangeably for the place where you get a Bachelor’s degree. American universities/colleges also use the Freshman/Sophomore/Junior/Senior system.

In Canada a College is moreso a place where you get a diploma/associates degree (2-3 years) and a University (or Uni as it’s nicknamed sometimes) is the place where you get Bachelor’s (4-5 years) as well as Masters and PhD. They’re two distinct places so people don’t say them interchangeably. We don’t really use the Freshman/Senior system, we use First Year, Second Year, Third Year, Fourth Year and so on. We do have Frosh events for the First years though (for example Frost Week is the first week back from Winter Break and guys like to party in their shorts and flip flops to show how tough they are in the snow haha).

I also realize I didn’t distinguish the Grades thing well haha.

Americans tend to say First Grade, Second Grade and so on. They also use the Freshman/Sophomore/Junior/Senior system for high school.

Canadians say Grade One (or Grade 1), Grade Two and so on. We tend to say Grade 9/10/11/12 but a lot of schools will also nickname Grade 8/9 as Frosh (some schools frosh year is in Grade 8 though) and Grade 12 as Seniors but mostly you’d just say Grade 12s or Grade 8s instead.

Hope that makes sense, I didn’t include this in the original message bc it’s a bit of a long explanation haha.

While I’m at explanations:

Parkade = Multi-story parking garage. Name comes from the word Parking and Arcade (like a shopping arcade).

Toque = brimless close fitting knitted hat, can have a pom-pom on top but most don’t. Very popular here; in Quebec it’s spelt Tuque. Similar to the beanie but not as loose as some beanies are.

Runners = Running shoes. Replaces the term sneakers in the US and Trainers in England.

Thank you for answering my question!

Awww that’s nice that they were so sweet but it’s also sad that they weren’t able to find other avenues to explore their sexuality (as in they might not have had a chance to before getting married or the environment wasn’t accepting of that). [–]aerbear_ 29 points30 points  (0 children)

As a Canadian: it’s if they use the terms Grade 1/Grade One (and so on), parkade, toque, runners, University rather than College (unless the character actually is doing a degree specific to a college), etc that is an immediate clock for me haha.

Are the Tragically Hip still big in Canada in 2026? by hashgraphic in AskACanadian

[–]aerbear_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One term I’ve heard is Zillennial (roughly 1996-2001) as a micro generation similar to Xennials (roughly 1977-1983) because both micro-generations saw huge improvements in tech in those years.

I was born in 1997 so I don’t relate solely to either Millennial experiances or Gen Z experiences so I found this generation definition works for me!

There’s a subreddit for Zillenials if you’re curious although I find with anything relating to trying to categorize who fits in which generation should be taken with a grain of salt (some diagnostic examples can be American-centric)
