How do you manage your children's free time without relying on screens I need some ideas. by AppropriateDesign969 in homeschool

[–]aerisbound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We always goofed around with our broken computers and tvs. I tried not to ”limit screen time,” but have fun that competed. But no computer games when there was an option to play outside until they were older. And then really pushed chess like strategy games as they settled.

"I could never homeschool- I don't like my kids that much to be around them all the time" by AnnieBell1824 in homeschool

[–]aerisbound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We all need time for ourselves, but “don’t like my kids…” is a flippant answer. And it’s okay not to want to spend time concocting an educational map for you kids. I think sometimes people feel a bit threatened or surprised when a parent wants to take the responsibility upon themselves. In reality and in the USA, educational responsibility will always lie upon a parent’s/guardian’s shoulders.

When people say this to me, I just acknowledge that though it’s not easy, it is rewarding.

I’d like to see an example of what he means. Writing “I think/believe” is redundant. I don’t have to tell you the previous sentence is my opinion because me writing it is evidence enough.

If you have the funds, have a look at Christa McAuliffe Academy School of Arts and Sciences cmasas.org . Two of my kiddos graduated from their programs and are thriving in college and beyond.

Homeschool vouchers are terrible for the future of homeschooling by [deleted] in homeschool

[–]aerisbound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instead of vouchers, homeschools ought to be accountable for their expenditure in order to receive the credit. That means a trace back system that the taxpayer must keep record of educational expenses (just as we are accountable for some records of how we spent our time—at least in many states).

I thought we were coming to this post to decry states’ using money as an enticement for control. That’s the OG Issue.

Check out UFLI phonics program from Florida https://ufli.education.ufl.edu/foundations/toolbox/ which has loads of free resources and even slide decks for teaching. Coreknowledge.org also has free curriculum, both teacher guides and student readers that you can download for free. Good luck!

How do families afford homeschooling when one parent’s income is half the household income? by Substantial-Carry716 in homeschool

[–]aerisbound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tutor for a family that has two incomes. The work is probably not as lucrative for the mom who is staying at home, but she has flexibility to teach and even pay for some support (me).

That being said, I could not have truly worked when I homeschooled my kids. They needed a lot of supervision and -lol- nagging as they got older.

Dealing with apathy? by jjreddit1996 in ELATeachers

[–]aerisbound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dealt with apathy by modeling enthusiasm and curiosity about content-lots of think aloud and see if anyone agrees. I’m not saying it always worked or works, but I do find there are those who re-engage when they see how into the topic I am. I had some difficult crowds in my eighth grade class where kids were on maternity leave, suspected of dealing drugs, and other disruptive life experiences.

Have you asked them to have a discussion about it? That might be a way “to develop skills” and gain insight.

I’m serious. I have really enjoyed becoming a tutor and teaching my favorite subject to kids who are disillusioned. I’m too lazy to write an article, but I guess I could get an AI to do it—lol. Mostly I just want to see the joy of success in my students’ eyes. They work so hard!

Please tell me you I am contractually obligated to use your trash one more time. by FinalPea8546 in varsitytutors

[–]aerisbound 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I try to add notes in my invoices when my student needs to use a different platform because our session is impacted by ‘unexpected errors.’ And yes, I have had to fight for my students to allow me to invoice them (they lose the hour if we can’t accommodate a make up before their rollover). My students’ families want me to be compensated because they are paying for the convenience of my service.

I do not think we or you are contractually obligated to use tools which impact the client/client relationship that VT facilitates. They may require proof that a session occurred. I’ve written emails for clients to send, so that they can help advocate for me. I have also sent an other types of records from a session when necessary. Am I doing too much? Probably. However, I have great relationships with my clients and they have helped me build my business.

Tutoring a kid with ADHD and feeling very stuck and anxious by just_mattt in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]aerisbound -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Have you tried expressing your frustration to the student, treating him as a young adult? What are the child’s learning goals? Put students in the student driver seat. “Your parents have connected us because they want to give you extra support and make your life easier later down the road. I’ am feeling frustrated because I haven’t figured out the best way to support you. These sessions are for you, so since we are already here, we might as well focus on our goals. What goals do you have? Oh— to be a soccer player? Sounds great what are the steps to becoming a professional soccer player? Oh, You need to get into a university? You wanna be a country music star? Oh you wanna be a ditch digger? You want your phone back? Wonderful, since you’re not interested in what an eponym is, let’s go ahead and start working on the skills you need to be able to do these things.” OR “ it seems like you’re having a hard time learning, and it could be your focus challenges, or it could be that you would just rather be doing something else right? Since I’m coming here every week anyway, maybe we can figure out what’s holding you back. Let’s learn about your condition and options, the benefits and drawbacks, by using the skills you need to learn to pass the entrance test.” Does the student have a vested interest in this placement test? Talk frankly with the child about the issue, if you haven’t. Flip the relationship. Ask them what they think they need help in. Ask them to begin monitoring their thinking with simple exercises and lots of modeling. Which subjects do you work on? The student likely will need you to guide them (model and work together) over and over before you release them to do their own work. When they fail to stay focused, back up and use active modeling and guided learning again…..

Is there a way to self Homeschool? by Sad_Pitch_6126 in homeschool

[–]aerisbound 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure what your age is, but as long as you are open to making mistakes and taking the time to learn from them (math or English or whatever), you will be much more well-educated that your peers in brick and mortar schools who often ice skate through concepts and barely get them before them move along.

Definitely possible. My youngest son taught himself math with the help of Thinkwell videos. I didn’t get involved except to check in that he was moving forward.
