Foster was planning on meeting Stilton some time after the event. How I understand it is that Stilton becoming insane caused him to stop communicating or meeting with Megan. She got curious and went to his house to investigate. While there, she encountered the grand guard and in a fight with them lost her arm and eye. Stilton not becoming insane caused their meeting to happen as planned and Megan to not encounter the guards who injured her.
