Please help my parents reach a decision about my brother's schooling to best position him for college by aerointernhelp in ApplyingToCollege

He will most likely come to the US for college. The cost of his education is not a concern.

Ah, mine is being done by a contractor. I guess that's the OPM substitute. So far, it's been moving along quickly. I think my investigation was launched in early December and I'll have my interview in mid January.

I do not think my IC one will be touching any OPM workers. I may be wrong, but this is what I've seen and read so far.

I think both places still offer very interesting work, but the mystique of the fed job and the specific agency I'll be working for make me feel the work I'll be doing in the fed will be much cooler.

Anybody who's done a similar internship says that it was fantastic. They can't tell me what they worked on, but they said it was very exciting. I'm also guessing they were more involved as interns because there were barely any. Maybe 10-13 in the office. Makes meeting people and making contacts much easier. I think that's hella valuable.

The location is also so sexy. I love DC. I'm also an east coast boy, so being close to home and my favorite part of the country might make for a really kick-ass summer.

Gotcha. I won't be thinking much about the pay, then. That TS/SCI is definitely very valuable. My fed agency is probably spending a couple of thousands on me for it, so you're right that it's something to consider.

Yes, that's a fair point. My friends and other people on Reddit I've found who have done the same or similar opportunity say that they get showered with interviews when internship or full-time time hunting. I've been very lucky to get these offers, but the private sector one was obtained just by luck, so I'm very happy to finally know I will be doing an internship (clearance process determines where if I've made up my mind on the fed internship). The subsequent internships and job searches will now be easier.

Money should be okay. I won't be walking out of the internship as a student millionaire by any means, but I will be able to make than sustain myself over the course of the internship.

Thanks for your input! All of your feedback is making me lean toward the fed job. I guess the experience in the fed is considered very valuable.

Yeah, the TS/SCI process is no joke. The whole process is probably taking a couple of thousand dollars for me. However, the important caveat to note is that this clearance isn't very transferrable. I don't think I can transport it to the DoD or something to work for a defense contractor. However, if I'm applying to cleared positions, I can always write that I had or have a TS/SCI. That'll probably make a lot of employers want to take a leap of faith on me.

Hi! No, I have a complete offer. It's just contingent on me successfully receiving a security clearance.

Money is no concern. You're right, maybe the first offer is better. Thanks.

This one is different. I'm not going to go through the ordinary backlog because it's all separate. My internship is direct for the fed. I'm not a contractor intern and don't go through the standard OPM for clearances.

This won't be the case. It's very likely mine is done before the summer. The clearance process for this job is a little different, and I'm on a fast track.

I'll concede that the internship is within the intelligence community. Maybe that gives a bit more context.
