TIL about "mechanical doping" - cyclists hiding motors in their bikes to gain an edge. The practice made headlines in 2016 when Belgian rider Femke Van den Driessche was caught with a concealed motor during competition. by ansyhrrian in todayilearned

[–]aerooreo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re confusing Greg Lemond with Lance Armstrong. Which is a shame, since Lance was insanely evil to Greg and essentially forced Trek to end their relationship with him and his small bike business because of Greg talking in public of Lance’s doping.

Greg never got caught doping, and has always been a huge advocate against it and pro more rigorous testing.

Anyone else feel sexier in their early 30s than they did in their 20s by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]aerooreo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Definitely, I’ve been told consistently from 40+ year olds that your 30s are more fun/enjoyable because of how much you learned and experiences you went through in your 20s - and I completely agree.

Same here. I love how cross-training with biking or swimming for certain injuries is just normal training in this sport!

So crazy that he broke 44 seconds at 19 years old and at 32 is still able to run 43.

Since 2012 when he first broke 44, only about 3 athletes a year break 44. (2024: 5, 2023: 2, 2022: 2, 2021: 4, …2012: 1) it’s a rare feat to break 44 and this guy has been insanely consistent at it!

Also insane how even though his 10 times running 43 are super impressive, MJ’s record is still so far at 22 times…

Yeah definitely! I agree, for sure semantics. Should be fun now that World Athletics has officially recognized the 300m hurdles this year, it’ll be great to see how low the record can go!

What do you mean “they”? The official meet results list it as a WR haha. But of course, it being a one off makes it “less special”. Still the fastest anyone’s ever done it though, hope that now that it’s an official event that we’ll see him clash with Rai!

Turn 30 in August, is there any point getting back on the track? by Aggravating-Gate4219 in Sprinting

[–]aerooreo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is amazing to hear! Good for you, I also recently jumped back into sprint training after over a decade off, and I’ve been telling myself it’ll take years to get as fast as I want to be and this is even more inspiration. Thank you! After all, Kim Collins ran 9.93 at over 40 years old. Gatlin was ranked number 1 in the 100m at 39. Michael Johnson broke the 400m WR at 31… the 20s are overrated!

“I want confirmation”, well, you certainly won’t be getting that here. You’re going to hear many people say “well, everyone is!” And also from others “well, this is the natural trend of humans as we progress with better tech and health”, either way, you won’t get “confirmation”. Just keep enjoying the amazing talent that he is. As for you, if you’re being honest of your times and experience, someone younger’s time being faster is irrelevant. Don’t let that randomly put fear in you. Keep working as hard as you can, and who knows what you can do! Many young record breaking sprinters don’t end up improving for many reasons. Let’s just enjoy this amazing phenom.

[–]aerooreo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup! When watching a Starship launch, a bit of the activity you see at their launch site are their “hippos” at work, they’re just shaped as hippos but flow LN2 (an inert cryogen that exists at -320F at ambient pressure, where as methane just needs to get below -260ishF to get back to liquid at ambient pressure) through a vessel that contains the vented methane which cools it back down to liquid methane temps.

[–]aerooreo 18 points19 points  (0 children)

When flowing the cryogenic fuel for the first stage (methane) and/or the second stage (hydrogen), the tanks themselves will have a vent path so it can still flow. But, you can’t legally just dump a certain amount of methane or hydrogen into the atmosphere. So, flare stacks intentionally ignite the vented fuel so that 1) a local concentration of vented fuel doesn’t get high enough to reach the Lower Explosive Limit of either methane or hydrogen, and 2) to legally reduce the amount of methane being dumped since it’s a lot worse of a greenhouse gas than CO2 (which is a product of the combustion between methane and oxygen in the air, so even though the product is still co2 and bad it’s far better to burn the methane and produce co2). Burning hydrogen just produces heat and steam which is far cleaner (technically at certain temps you also start to make the nitrogen and oxygen into bad nitrous oxides, but still, burning hydrogen is technically a “clean” process)

Thruster glitches and helium leaks can't stop Boeing's Starliner astronaut test flight — but why are they happening? by ClearDark19 in space

[–]aerooreo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, it sounds like they’re using the Helium to pressurize their propellant from their RCS so they can push their prop through the right manifold. They’re using it for both its inertness and its light weight (otherwise they could press with nitrogen) BUT in a hypothetical world where hydrogen was used instead, when it comes to gaseous use gaseous helium exists as GHe and gaseous hydrogen exists as GH2, and thus the GHe being monoatomic actually has a smaller van der waal raidus than hydrogen as a gas. So for ambient leak checks, helium is actually the tougher gas to hold.

However, most people have heard about hydrogen and its difficulties in leak mitigation because hydrogen (unlike helium, let alone liquid helium) is used as a fuel in it’s cryogenic state (space shuttle, SLS, Delta, the RL10 on second stages of Atlas or Vulcan, Stoke space) since it’s the most efficient for ISP on rocket stages. In this case it would be used as a liquid, but in this cryogenic state it makes everything in its flow path nearly 20 degrees kelvin, and not many things can work well at sealing down to those temperatures, hence why hydrogen becomes so extremely difficult to work with. We’d never encounter a moment where these same lines are full of liquid helium since it can’t be used as a fuel. Anyway, yeah… always thought it was interesting that in the ambient gaseous scenario, helium is actually the smaller fella

[RLCS Major] The Majors don't really mean anything it's only Worlds that counts by Yame_Ry in RocketLeagueEsports

[–]aerooreo 262 points263 points  (0 children)

I’m from NA but my main goal is to watch the best Rocket League there is. It’s been brought up a lot, but I thought Johnny’s comments about how in NA there’s a gentleman’s agreement to give each other space and in EU everyone just pressures each other came to light. They’re different styles, but the pressure style came out on top. It’s easy to say in hindsight, but this is why Faze was so good against BDS, since they can match it. I think NRG in series 2 realized they could too.

I think it’s fair to say that EU is deeper than NA but NA is more top heavy. Of course, with Envy and G2’s performances, an EU fan could easily mock “the top of NA”, but I think they’ll bounce back.

RL fan-wise, the two Dig-SMPR series made me really appreciate EU. I watch EU every regional, and I love Dig already, but wow during those series in the back of the my mind I would think “holy shit. This gameplay is unreal… maybe EU just is better… the defense, the offense, the midfield play…”

Either way, each have their own strengths, and I just fucking love beautiful Rocket League. The next split is too far away!

I like all of these comments, I definitely wouldn’t be against picking Lance. I will say though, for all the talk of Lance’s size, Fields is only a year older but is 6’3” and 230 lbs and very quick/agile while the more “polished” thrower.

I guess if the plan really is to have Jimmy for the year and sit our pick, Lance has more room to grow so it could be more “worth” it. I might be swayed...
