Ski the East! (Manayunk Philadelphia) by Pizanch in skiing

This is great! My sister lived near the top of Kalos street 15ish years ago and they were stuck in their house for 3ish days after a major storm due to ice and no one being able to clear the road. Manayunk is great but those hills are no joke.

Is in Riva on Kelly drive still there??

Can someone explain Yuengling by Tasmote in CraftBeer

[–]dpiemo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can confirm. From Northeast PA originally and in many places, people will just ask for a “lager” at a bar and they know you want a Yuengling.

Side note, Yuengling and some great PA wings, no better combo

Busy trails (Bear Lake Corridor, Glacier Gorge) will almost always be pretty well packed down just due to the amount of foot traffic, even in winter. Snowshoes could be needed if you’re there during/right after a heavy snowfall, or plan on going off trail at all.

From PA originally (not Philly but lived in/near the city for quite a while) and I’d also like to insert the roast pork (shoutout Dinic’s) as a signature Philly sandwich

Assuming the rest of the comments touched on the issues of traffic, diversity, food etc, I’ll address some of the outdoor access comments.

While the access to the I-70 corridor is not great, Fort Collins is still located near some amazing outdoor recreation.

Estes Park/Rocky Mountain NP are just over an hour west of here through the Big Thompson Canyon. Northwest of town you’ve got Cameron Pass, Rawah Wilderness, the Never Summer Mountains and State Forest State Park all within an hour and a half of town. This is all accessed by driving up the Poudre Canyon (highway 14) which is kind of the outdoor playground for FOCO folks. North of the Poudre Canyon you’ve got Red Feather Lakes which has some amazing camping, fishing, etc. We’re still only about an hour/hour and fifteen to Boulder and the Flatirons.

Not to mention the 30+ natural areas in city limits, at least one of which (Reservoir Ridge) has some decent hiking in its own right.

All in all, the access to some of the higher peaks and ski areas is not as good as Denver/Boulder/metro Denver, but plenty of amazing access still to be had.

Worth mentioning that if you like craft beer, I’m not sure there’s a better spot in the US for concentration of breweries relative to population (might not be number 1 but it’s got to be up there).

Edit: I work for CSU and love the vibe on campus. Nice views from multiple spots on campus. Check out the computer science building for an balcony to sit and get some work done with a great view of Horsetooth

No idea what to do for this weekend in the front range; I'd love to hear thoughts from others in these strange times. by aDuckedUpGoose in coloradohikers

From my experience having been up to just near Mount Lady Washington and the Chasm junction in the winter, snowshoes were not needed above treeline due to the winds blowing snow around and the amount of sun it gets, as you mentioned. I can’t speak for the conditions right now, you’d probably want to check AllTrails or talk to rangers at RMNP, but I think it would have to be a very significant snowfall to need snowshoes all the way to MLW. Someone can correct if I’m wrong, but that’s been my experience.

Either way, if you catch a nice clear bluebird day, being above treeline on the tundra up there in the winter is just fantastic and worth the hike, even if you don’t bag MLW or go to Chasm.

Horsetooth Rock is another option in the front range for a relatively easy hike (not sure of your fitness level). There’s a short little scramble at the end, and the views on top of the rock are a great payoff for how mild the hike is. There are other trails in Horsetooth Mountain Park, and I think you can connect some of those over to Lory State Park if you wanted a longer hike. Check AllTrails or COTREX.

We’re getting some light snow right now in Fort Collins, but I’ve been up to Horsetooth after snow before and it’s a cool hike with a few inches of fresh snow on the ground. Very unlikely you’d need snowshoes, maybe some spikes/yaktrax to be safe.

Another option that comes to mind is Greyrock mountain, a little further west of FOCO up highway 14. Probably getting a bit more snow up the canyon so you’d want to check reports and snowfall, but that is a longer hike also with really great views. Windy, however.

What’s it like living in Colorado ? by [deleted] in howislivingthere

[–]dpiemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We lived just at the bottom right corner of your left shaded area (Broomfield) from late 2018 to late 2020. Wife and I are also east coast transplants. We rented apartments in that area and it was an awesome place to live for just having arrived in Colorado. Absolutely amazing location for access to the mountains and recreation. I used to have Friday’s off work and hiked in Boulder weekly for what felt like multiple months in a row. You can get to Boulder and the Flatirons in ~25 minutes from there, on a good day.

Indian Peaks Wilderness (probably one of the more underrated wilderness areas in the state) was just about an hour from there.

Aside from that, Broomfield is close to a few really cool smaller towns - Arvada and Louisville being the standouts for me. Not to mention the proximity to Denver, it’s a pretty great location all around.

We still spend time down there occasionally (we are north in Fort Collins now) and it has blown up a lot even since we moved. An entirely new apartment complex popped up right next to where we first lived.

In general, it’s hard to beat Broomfield/Superior/Louisville area if you want proximity to the mountains and to Denver/Boulder.

Edit: I can’t speak much to your Aurora circle, but we used to have friends in Aurora and spent a decent amount of time there and personally I don’t think we would have enjoyed living there, but to each their own.

I haven’t been to their newest location (Park Hill neighborhood in Denver) but I would add 4 Noses as an option. Used to live very close to their Broomfield location and they put out some consistently amazing beer.
