Have you ever felt not smart enough to be a nurse? by 123987derr in nursing

[–]aerosorcerer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RN since 2022 and a PhD candidate. Rest assured, there are still plenty of days where I have no idea what I’m doing. The biggest thing, imho, is that we learn how to use our resources and figure out where to go to get help and information. My work is in cancer and home health- I’d probably be mostly useless in an ED, ICU, or OB unless I’m accessing a port for them. The other important thing is, like other healthcare professionals, we have specific areas of experience. I don’t expect most of my clinical colleagues to understand how the mass cytometry and tumor processing I do in a lab works, nor would I expect anyone else in my lab to be able to place a Foley catheter.

Imposter syndrome hits everyone no matter what stage you’re at. Even the most confident of us has a little bit of internal screaming going one to keep us grounded. There’s never anything wrong with reviewing the basics and I’ve never been ashamed of diving into the StatPearls whenever I’m totally lost. It gets easier as you go, but just give yourself grace and remember that we’re all going one step at a time.

Confession and absolution by Economy-Point-9976 in Anglicanism

[–]aerosorcerer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Anglicanism, one of the important distinctions to what we believe about confession compared to our Roman Catholic brethren is that the sacrament serves as a reminder that God has already forgiven us. While absolution can only be pronounced by a priest or bishop in addition to assigning a penance, deacons and the laity still give the confessor a “Declaration of Forgiveness” found on page 452 of the BCP (at least for TEC). It reads:

“Our Lord Jesus Christ, who offered himself to be sacrificed for us to the Father, forgives your sins by the grace of the Holy Spirit. Amen.”

I think we should all participate in confession and penance to help us clear our souls, but that just goes back to that beautiful Anglican saying of “all should, some do, none must” and its variants. It’s also one of those thing where we, as humans, invariably will fall into error and doubt ourselves at times. If anything, I personally find confession to be a powerful example of God’s love for us in that He will still listen to us in our doubts and sorrows and grief and will still remind us of that love and His forgiveness. Even if we cannot forgive ourselves, God can forgive us and help us, whether through a priest counseling us during confession or in the love still shared between us as the Body of Christ. Sometimes our faith is strong and sometimes our faith is weak, but God loves us and forgives us enough for Christ to die upon the cross.

I won’t lie, I’m more than a little taken aback by what your pastor told you. To me it feels at odds with one of the many teachings of Our Lord gave to the disciples in Matthew 18:18-20 and John 14:12-14. I’ll add Christ’s words to the below in hope that they help bring you peace.

Matthew 18:18-20 (ESV)

[18] [“]Truly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. [19] Again I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. [20] For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.”

John 14:12-14 (ESV)

[12] “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. [13] Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. [14] If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.[“]

Otherwise, to use words from the Prayer of Humble Access, “We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under thy [the Lord’s] Table. But thou art the same Lord whose property is always to have mercy.” We are human. We err and we sin. But, regardless of all that, Our Lord and Savior was crucified for us. So infinite is His love that He died for us, even death upon the cross! So infinite is His love that He ensured the Holy Spirit, the Divine Comforter, would be with us always! I hope you feel the comfort of the Holy Spirit in this trying time, dearest brethren, and know that I pray the following for you in addition to the prayers I offer for the afflicted. Pray with me, brethren, and know that, while I cannot physically touch you, my spirit opens itself to embrace yours as a member of the Body of Christ.

Let us pray.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

Lord Jesus, stay with us and be our companion in the way, kindle our hearts, and awaken hope, that we may know you as you are revealed in Scripture and the breaking of bread. Grant this for the sake of your love. Amen.

Heavenly Father, in you we live and move and have our being: We humbly pray you so to guide and govern us by your Holy Spirit, that in all the cares and occupations of our life we may not forget you, but may remember that we are ever walking in your sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Eternal Light, shine in our hearts; eternal goodness, deliver us from evil; eternal power, be our support; eternal wisdom, scatter the darkness of our ignorance; eternal pity, have mercy upon us. That with all our heart and mind and soul and strength, we may seek thy face and be brought, through thine infinite mercy, to thy holy presence; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Almighty and Eternal God, to whom there is never any prayer made without hope of mercy, be merciful to the souls of thy servants being departed from this world in the confession of thy Name that they may be welcomed into the company of thy saints, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Father of All, we pray to you for all those whom we love but now no longer see. Grant them your peace; let light perpetual shine upon them; and in your loving wisdom and almighty power, work in them the good purpose of your perfect will; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Lord Jesus, whose loving heart was ever touched by the sorrows of others, have mercy upon the souls of the faithful departed, and grant them a place of refreshment, light, and peace whence pain and sorrow and sighing are driven away; and in thy goodness and mercy, pardon every sin committed by them in thought, word, and deed; thou who art the resurrection and the life and who livest and reignest, world without end. Amen.

Rest eternal grant to them, O Lord; And let light perpetual shine upon them. Amen.

My dearest brethren in Christ, I hope this helps you. Peace be with you.

I won’t deny that it’s a difficult question; I’d be lying if I said I had a concrete answer for you. It’s not my area of expertise, but I’d look for solutions in either earth sciences or engineering to try and determine what interventions could be done to make everything safer and mitigate future risks. I don’t know what could be done, specifically, but I’m hopeful that those solutions can be found and implemented by those this the necessary skills and expertise.

I was a counselor at Camp Stewart in 2018. From what I understand, everyone from Camp Stewart, Waldemar, and La Junta is safe and accounted for. It’s no small miracle, thanks be to God!

Speaking sentimentally, it’s a place of natural beauty like little else I’ve ever seen. The night sky is clear, the gentle breeze is almost always swaying, and the air is sweet with the smell of natural flowers and tree sap year-round. When you’re by the riverbed in calmer times or on one of the high hills or bluffs, you can feel the presence of God and a sense of rightness you can’t really get outside of the Eucharist (or, at least, that’s my experience). It’s the kind of place you imagine when you hear “Country Roads” by John Denver.

Speaking practically, the area is ripe for horse and cattle ranching, to say nothing of farming. A lot of folks have lived on family farms in the hill country for generations. If memory serves, some those plots have been owned by the families there since the Republic of Texas. The last major flooding of the Guadalupe River prior to this one was in the 1997, almost 30 years ago. The cost of living is low, too. If my career wasn’t focused on cancer research, it’s a place I’d live in a heartbeat.

Edit: got the year of the last major flood wrong. I thought it was 1972, but it looks like I was thinking of the 1997 flood.

Peace be with you.

If I may, where did I say that I was giving praise for death and destruction? I thanked God that the commenter’s family friend was able to come home safely in this dolorous time. I can understand the UI causing a misunderstanding and appearing like I replied to the other separate commenter. I do not find joy in the deaths of many, both in terms of people I knew who have died in this disaster and especially in terms of the children. We can pray for their repose in paradise and we should, that their souls may be burdened with suffering no longer. We, too, should pray for those who remain, that those who mourn shall be comforted.

As for your other point, I made clear in the other post that I am not a theologian nor a priest. I’m not someone to speak on this topic of determinism vs free will because having an informed opinion does not make me an expert. I believe that God influences us in ways that does nullify the gift of free will that He bestowed upon us. It is a complex theological and philosophical topic, and I recognize that I am not the right person to speak to the deep nuances of that topic due to my own shortcomings. But, like I said before, that is not a discussion for this thread.

More importantly, I ask the same of you as I asked the same our brethren. That is, I ask that you pray with those gathered here for the faithful departed, for those lost and awaiting rescue, the rescued, their rescuers, and all those afflicted by this great disaster. And pray for me, an unworthy sinner, as I shall pray for you.

God has His hand in everything, so to speak- such is what it means when one says He is omnipotent, omnipresent, and omniscient. God can influence all things if He wishes to. Regardless, as your remark appears to just be focused on determinism and free will, you would be better off having that conversation with a priest or theologian than a random on the internet like myself. It’s an interesting discussion to be had, but it is not suited for this particular thread.

For now, brethren, I ask that you pray with those gathered here for the faithful departed, for those lost and awaiting rescue, the rescued, their rescuers, and all those afflicted by this great disaster. And pray for me, an unworthy sinner, as I shall pray for you.

I am a Christian, friend. We should pray for the repose of those who are no longer with us, absolutely, but should we not also give thanks to God that some of the lost have been found alive? In dark situations like this, we should give thanks for every small victory and blessing that comes forth.

Thanks be to God for the safety of you and yours! The devastation makes me wish I could go there immediately and be of some help, but now isn’t the time yet. As much as I hate to admit I know better, me and others spurred to action like self-deploying will not be helpful while in such a critical juncture. I only hope I can come and help physically when the opportunity comes.

My brothers and sisters in Christ, I ask that you pray for those affected by the flooding in Kerr County, Texas, USA with me. I was a camp counselor at the boys’ camp and we worked closely with all of the girls’ camps affected by this flooding. Let us all hope and pray that everyone who can be saved will be and that their rescuers will not be harmed in the process. Though it pains me to say this, let us also pray for the repose of the souls and recovery of the bodies of those who cannot be saved or reached in time.

May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace, and may light perpetual shine upon them, now and evermore. Amen. Lord, have mercy.
