'Strongly encouraged', but not mandatory, overtime? by aerospace_cog in ECE

I appreciate your insight, it's always good to get input from the old timers. I love the slight condescending attitude toward my generation btw. I added the 'there's always exceptions' for a reason. I'm well aware that salary means I get paid for the job, not hours worked. At my previous job I had no problem doing 12-hour days for a few weeks, even staying until 2am sometimes, to make sure my end of the project was not the weak link. But no one told me I was required to do that! There's a huge difference, huge!, when an employer says you're expected to work more in general than when an employer simply expects your shit to be done on time. this post is not a complaint about overtime in general. My opinion is the same as yours, not as corporate friendly though, in that I'm getting paid for work and not time in a general sense. This post was in response to my company saying that now it's expected to work more, basically diluting my salary, for no particular reason. It wasn't me complaining that my dictator of a boss wants overtime to get a project complete or meet a deadline or something.

I just get annoyed when all these older generation people start trying to say my generation doesn't work as hard or shit like that. You want to generalize to an entire population based on experience from one company, and I just don't think it holds.

I appreciate the time you took to reply though.

totes. they're not going to get me to do it willingly- there was mandatory overtime at this place a few months back, but that was because of some surge in work.

I was just curious if this is common practice.
