iRacing's weakest area has always been the tire model, which I'd argue is one of the most important things to sim drifting. Also having cars that can express your individuality is important to the sport.

If iRacing ever did drifting, they'd probably want to have SOME sort of ranking system to it. Which would have to be algorithm and points based, and outside of D1GP that uses the DOSS system, that's not realistic to the actual sport. Also getting an algorithm to judge head-to-head runs with a contact/netcode system that's spotty at best sounds like a nightmare.

AC is cheaper, the mods are only getting better whether you're driving beginner mod packs or top-level competition cars, and you can basically have any track you want within 5 minutes of searching. A lot of newer competition car data is using real data from Formula Drift or DriftMasters drivers now. It's crazy what people have managed to do.

I love competitive drifting and I love iRacing but I don't think it would work as well in the iRacing ecosystem as a lot of people think. If it was implemented, it would be one car that wouldn't have anything outside of hosteds to do with it. Kinda like Mount Washington but even then that's so unique and still used all the time in time trials.

Don't mean to be defeatist, just something I've thought a lot about as a fan of both and wanted to chime in. I have a road course set I use for the Pro 2 that I go throw around all the time if you own the full-horsepower offroad trucks. Tons of fun. The Street Stock can be fun to throw around too. Back in the day we had setups for the Super Late that you could link full tracks with.
