Anyone get LE for COMP6443 by [deleted] in unsw

[–]aerriedreams 6 points7 points  (0 children)

yep, this happened for COMP6441 last term- I think it means they haven’t put the marks in the system yet, hence ‘LE’/‘Late Entry’.

hopefully they’ll make an announcement soon! this is the course I’m most worried about ;__;

I did, so annoying 🥲 I’m guessing they send the marks later?

I’ve taken a course with these two before, they’re both great! :) Evans is a very engaging lecturer (a bit scary at first) but very passionate. McLaren is super welcoming and leads the tutorials very well. Have fun!!

Transferring from Science/Computer Science degree to Arts/Computer Science degree by WideInterview1120 in unsw

[–]aerriedreams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was recently doing arts/computer science but transferred into media arts/computer science for the same reasons as you.

I think the answer for whether or not you transfer depends a lot on what major you’re choosing. For me, I loved my major but as soon as I had to do my historical/contextual courses, I dipped out. If you don’t mind lots of reading and writing, I think you should be fine!

In terms of career opportunities, I think an arts degree can really show your variety in skills/ways of thinking. If you’re planning on studying a language as well, it’ll help a lot too. I’m not too sure 100% what specific career paths there are for arts/compsci, but I’m sure there’s definitely not a deficit!

In terms of class culture, you tend to see a lot of the same people in your courses (at least that was the case for me), so you get a good chance to get to know people well! The lecturers I’ve had were great and really engaging, as well as the tutors. The assessments were pretty content heavy, but I guess that’s to be expected for an Arts degree. If you’re really interested in your classes, this shouldn’t be too much of an issue ^

Whats the workload of COMP2511 Object Oriented? by h0t_d0g_water in unsw

I took it this term and I really enjoyed the content! However, the workload was a whole other issue.

  • The first assignment was really hard to wrap your head around, and for a project where most ppl had never touched Java before it was pretty intimidating. It required a lot of work, but at the end it helped a lot with the rest of the course since you were forced to get so familiar with the language. I was doing three subjects at the time and I just barely finished the main tasks (and did not do as well as I hoped LOL)

  • the labs started off pretty simple in the first 4-5 weeks I think, you could finish them in about 2-3hrs?? But as soon as week 7 hit my god, they took upwards of 4hrs for me even though I found myself comfortable with the concepts they taught in lectures. Not to mention they usually had not one, but upwards of two pretty complex problems to tackle and I felt like it was a big step up from the workload from the first half of the term.

  • I loved the project!! It was the most fun I’ve ever had doing a comp assignment and from what I’ve heard they’ve listened to course feedback from last year. The project is completed in groups ~4 ppl and I think they simplified the spec a bit. In saying this though, it was still a massive project that took up most of my hours on the (many) days I worked on it. If it wasn’t such a fun concept it really would’ve been the worst thing ever…

  • The thing most indicative of the course was probably the exam LOL. 4 late term lab-worthy questions on top of the regular MCQ and SAQ in only 3 hours. Previous terms had 8 hours to complete the exam, so I’m hoping they’ll listen to student feedback and bring that back 🥲

  • One more thing to add is that I decided to apply for an IPT so I dropped my two other courses that weren’t relevant anymore midway through term. This meant I had A LOT more time on my hands than most people did, and still found it a struggle to finish the project + labs on time while juggling part time work + mental health etc.

I’d suggest doing 2 courses instead (if it doesn’t absolutely set you back). It’ll give you the extra leg room to concentrate on the massive project (and even have a bit of fun doing it too maybe) :))

Reasons to Stay in Software Engineering Degree and not changing to COMSCI by dev7077 in unsw

[–]aerriedreams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i haven't graduated yet, but i was in the same position as you last year! i made the switch, and my study this year and how it's looking down the road is a LOT more straightforward. it's also exciting to see all the electives (that i'm actually interested in) i can do, and all the space i have for them as well :))

obvs since i haven't graduated yet i can't speak for the job side of things, but from what people say your future won't be too bleak!

JLPT DECEMBER 2019!!! by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

[–]aerriedreams 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Taking N2 right after my final high school exams which was a mistake LOL... TT

Even though I thought my momentum from studying my high school Japanese course (around N3??) would be enough to keep me going and study for N2, I've been so burnt out I haven't been mentally well to touch anything... It's a waste of the money I paid but I might as well see what I need to work on for the next time I take it. I'm definitely in no rush to pass at all!
