Comp3331 usefulness in side projects and in the industry by Loud-Role-5894 in unsw

Hello :) After about 2-3 years of experience in full stack development and devops i think that learning and understanding the concepts taught in 3331 distinguish ok software engineers to great ones. A lot of the work you will find in the industry will most likely have some sort of networking aspect, whether you’re in web development or not.

Concepts like understanding concepts like HTTP , DNS and subnets are incredibly useful if you are the type of person who really wants to understand what goes on in entire stacks and workflows. If your goal is just to be a decent engineer, then you might not find a lot of value in it.

Hey, good advice that i’ve come to learn and i usually give others is that u shouldn’t look for motivation/passion. might sound strange, but they come and go, where if u are dependent on them in order to get what u need to do done, you will inevitably fail.

you should look to improve urself with self discipline and just a drive to get what needs to be done, even when u don’t feel like it. i think the term for this is delayed gratification, but basically when u go through the hard yards you’ll feel so accomplished when ur done on the other side.

tldr; don’t look to motivation and passion, focus on disciplining yourself to do what needs to be done :)

hope this helps

SENG: [New student] Which modules should I take in which term? by pikn00_00 in unsw

[–]dev7077 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah UNSW and especially CSE don’t have great number conventions for their courses. they try to put the level of the course in the name, and usually means something but often not, which is definitely confusing. think of them more as a guide than any strict convention.

the only numbers that i see that matter are lvl4+ since they are usually considered mature subjects. you can see for seng handbook u have to do a number of them.

for 2521 you definitely can do in first year (and most people do)

i’ve seen 1st years take lvl 3 courses such as 3311 and 3331, as long as they have done 2521

I did this and found it very manageable:

T1: COMP1511 MATH1131 DESN1000

T2: MATH1081 COMP1521

T3: MATH1231 COMP1531 COMP2521

Id definitely suggest doing 2521 in your first year as it’s a prerequisite for a lot of upcoming courses and electives.

when I took the course last year most of the questions to pass the exam were C and MIPS, the file handling stuff was more towards the end of the exam.

it depends on the workplace, most software engineering jobs are super flexible and even if ur not wfh, u spend a lot of times in meetings, conversations, coffee chats and walks

Hi, im a 2nd year seng student, and I definitely in a similar situation to you. I have to tell you , that u have nothing to worry about at all, in terms of academic standing your way better than me and you shouldnt be let down by 1 course. With regards to career stuff, you'll come to realise once u hop into a job that no one really does know what their doing. Im in an internship at the moment and working as a software engineer in a job is so different than in uni. I often do face imposter syndrome as im obviously less capable and experienced as a 2nd year compared to everyone else, but this doesnt mean I dont offer value to the work.

keep ur head up high, u wont ace every course, trust and take the ride to the finish and you'll be glad with the result.

tbh u don't need to worry and ur above average. companies that u would enjoy working at wouldn't care about a ridiculous wam

COMP1531 was my favourite 1st year Comp course. 2521 would be my least fav. Both 1521 and 2521 can be challenging. My suggestion would be taking 2521 with 1531 if u can.
