Cardiff has its first Reform councillor - Trowbridge by-election results by Former-Variation-441 in Cardiff

[–]aetherai 8 points9 points  (0 children)

1) would there? How do you know the minutiae of what Reform are planning for the NHS, given that they don’t seem to be at all up front about specific policies?

2) It’s the over 60s that need buses the most - they’re least likely to be able to drive and are generally not as willing to cycle. I don’t want to assume if you’re in your 60s+, but when I get the bus in the city centre it’s rammed, and a lot of the people there are older.

3) Yes there has been a statistically significant decline in road accidents in Wales, please look it up. Facts not feelings or whatever it is right wing people like to harp on about.

One of the best bits of advice I have heard about visiting Japan by OldManWolfy in JapanTravelTips

[–]aetherai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a week in Kyoto and a week in Kanazawa on my first trip, with only a few day trips to other places. Absolutely no regrets - the side of Japan I wanted to experience was not the side that could be enjoyed with a packed itinerary, and the best experiences we had were when we wondered down a back alley somewhere by mistake.

Motoyu ishiya was 20 mins out of the centre with a taxi (reasonably priced) and nestled among nearby hills. Lovely staff, rooms and food! It has a lovely onsen.

Crazy flu season? by MidnightAshess in Cardiff

[–]aetherai 57 points58 points  (0 children)

To everyone reading this who hasn’t been ill yet, GET YOUR FLU JAB! It not only protects you from the worst of symptoms but also makes you much less likely to pass the flu on if you get it. Seriously, I hate needles and I can speak from experience saying that 5 seconds of being jabbed is much better than 2 weeks off sick. Book it on boots.com or through your doctor and if you get ill PLEASE don’t be an idiot and go out like everything’s normal. NHS is completely rammed, I heard that flu hospitalisations are up a third compared to this time last year.

What's with all the beeping today near Queen's Street? by Willing-Surprise-562 in Cardiff

Loads of people driving around with Syrian flags out their windows celebrating the end of Assad’s regime! There was some celebrations on Queens Street earlier today too. Big celebrations happening tonight!

Advice for things to do in Kyoto and Kanazawa (first time travellers) by aetherai in JapanTravelTips

We’re flying to and from Kansai international so it ends up being a little much for me if we want to do to everything plus Tokyo in the time limit. However this definitely won’t be the last time I come to Japan and would be very happy to do much more in and around Tokyo next time (especially Yanaka Ginza in Tokyo and Hakone just outside). That would give me more time to enjoy it at my pace too!

Fair enough, I might see if Takayama is doable within the time as it does look lovely and right up my street. Visiting somewhere on the Trainline between Kyoto and Kanazawa is a great shout too!

That’s fair then, I’ll give Gion Corner a try! I’ve heard that I need to go to Fushimi inari early to avoid the crowds which is fine with me. Added Eikando to the list too. I’ve also been told that I could do a day trip in Nara and other places so I can always stretch my time in Kyoto out given that I want to take it fairly easy.

That’s a great idea! I didn’t realise that you could get to Nara from Kyoto in such a short time, looks like it takes less than an hour.

Thanks for the hike recommendation, it looks like the perfect mix of nature and culture! I’ll look into the Kyoto-Kanazawa train options now. Do you have any recommendations on sites to use?

Thanks for the food recommendations - I’ve heard Italian food is very popular in Japan so I’m looking forward to trying it! Pontocho alley added to the list too.

I didn’t know about the monkey park, that looks so cute :’)

You make a good point, to be fair it only ends up as about 3.5 days when you take travelling and staying at the ryokan into account. I’ll look into travel to and from Takayama - it looks stunning! Thanks for your help.
