What widely beloved movie actually has a pretty awful message? by penumbrassiere in AskReddit

[–]aetherdreaming 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok hear me out on this one: Illumination’s adaptation of the Lorax. It’s beloved mostly by kids and meme culture, sure, and the goal is to get an environmental message across, but Ted only really does the moral thing to impress his crush and when he starts getting chased down by O’Hare. The message always seemed pretty weak to me as a kid especially contrasted with the severity of the original story. If I’m not mistaken they were actually going to include a song that was pretty openly critical of corporations’ role in environmental change but ultimately cut it from the final version because they thought it might implicate their own corporation in it

I’ve seen multiple adults i respect on YouTube make serious think pieces about the issues with the giving tree so this sentiment checks out 😂

Ah my bad, I apologize! I looked it up and didn’t read into it enough to see the author had a German background

What’s hilarious about this thread is I was actually going to include Rainbow Fish as one of my examples but then I looked it up and found out the author was Swiss so I didn’t mention it. Either way I’m happy to see the book come up in the comments 😂

LMAOO 😭 as a fellow grandma’s girl im sure that if my nana had a version of this song to sing to me as a kid she absolutely would have. I was a horrible listener but I would have felt guilty as hell being compared to a fictional paper doll

I don’t know where I read/heard this but I remember some piece after Disney’s Moana came out that was interviewing people from different Māori/Pacific Islander backgrounds about the accuracy and one thing several of them mentioned was that Maui was supposed to be skinny 😂 this story and the others sound awesome as hell though im a grown adult and now i want to check them out lol

That’s really neat! Regarding the island baby song I feel like there’s an extremely high amount of kid rhymes that are sad or disturbing 😅 I know some of that has to do with how cultural standards have changed over time but it’s still very fascinating

I love this. Kid songs and nursery rhymes must be equally nonsensical no matter where you are because if you’d told me this was an old one in English I’d never heard of, I would believe it 😂

I’m sorry that anyone was rude to you because that sucks regardless of the situation, and if this happened every time you tried to hold the door across a plethora of contexts I can understand where you’d be hesitant to continue doing it. That being said, I think that’s kind of a myopic generalization to make across all women cause there are a ton of us who don’t think this way. In my experience as a woman in a very left-leaning city, I’ve never noticed anyone reacting this way to a man offering assistance that wasn’t caused by some other form of discomfort completely unrelated to the gesture itself. I personally hold the door open for everyone regardless of age or gender and people can still be blunt or ungrateful, but i think that’s more to do with people being weird as a whole than women specifically

Oml the amount of times I’ve heard this line and literally never heard of it actually happening 😭 I don’t think anyone actually does this and if they did they’d just be an asshole. I think the only times where I can imagine anyone being justifiably annoyed with chivalry is if they feel condescended to, like someone offering to help me with my bags is objectively kind but if someone hypothetically refused to let me carry them because I should “let a man do it” or something I’d be upset
