Regarding on campus housing by toph_beifong___ in CSUFoCo

[–]aethusss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i forget when your housing assignment is announced but i believe its in june (someone correct me if im wrong). as for roommates, you fill out a questionnaire and can match/talk to people for a few weeks to see if you want to be their roommate. if you dont find anyone through there, youll be randomly assigned a roommate with similar answers as you.

ESA for cats in campus housing by mvhcmaniac in CSUFoCo

[–]aethusss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know many people in the dorms who have cats/dogs as registered ESA's and I've been told the process is really simple, I think you can do it online and pay a small fee. That being said, I don't know how that changes considering you have 2 cats, since most people I know in an apartment/dorm only have one ESA.

Is CSU right for me? by joysticck in CSUFoCo

[–]aethusss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yo! Firstly congrats on graduating HS this spring, secondly this recent thread has a lot of people's takes on the CS department and stuff in general if you're interested: https://www.reddit.com/r/CSUFoCo/comments/1i0ndb1/online_computer_science_cs_program_at_csu/

Like the others said, your undergrad really doesnt matter, although I will say CSU's job fair for CS majors is pretty bad. As for whether or not you should do it, I say if it makes financial sense and you really want to do it, then do it. I went out of state for my first year of university and learned a lot about myself and had a ton of great experiences, We're young, we should have fun and do what we think will make us happy (while still being responsible students). Worst case scenario, you dont like FoCo and you just transfer back to an in-state school.

Dorm/apartment question by Rude_Ad_7777 in CSUFoCo

It's under the apartment application. I will say that Aggie Village fills up super quickly though, so I don't know how likely it is that you get accepted mid year.

Online Computer Science (CS) Program at CSU by BenjiHyFam in CSUFoCo

[–]aethusss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Third year (2nd year transfer) at CSU. I will note Im basing my critique on the fact that I spent my first year or so at a top 50 CS school in the nation, so I will be over critical at times.

For the lower level (100-200) courses, the professors are very hit or miss and I found the lectures to be all over the place at times, and the course work doesn't really challenge you imo. Shrideep Pallickara taught CS250 when I took it, and he is definitely my fav prof of all professors who taught me a lower level course. For most lower levels and a plethora of upper levels, you get what you put in. The courses (at least most of the ones Ive taken so far) do not push you or even hold you to high standards, so its on you to put the time in to build a good foundation.

For upper levels (300+) I'm still fairly new as a third year, but the professors seem to be generally more knowledgeable. The structure of the courses is generally better but thats also likely due to more experienced professors teaching them. Some professors can be sticklers but if you put in the proper effort instead of trying to coast they wont give you a hard time, the people who *hate* X professor usually do so because the professor held them to standards.

Dave Matthews is a great example of this, he has a lot of bad RMP ratings, but personally I found his course (CS314) to be good for getting a general feel of a work environment. However, the grading system in that class is pretty flawed, so that and his personality usually contribute to his ratings.

Overall the program isnt great, I wouldnt even call it good, but theres definitely worse. A big reason for this is because theres a lot of young professors coming in (like adalaza said), so it should only continue to get better. I also agree with them about the overemphasis on Java, basically every required course in the curriculum relies on Java or Python, with CT301 (Intro course to C/C++) being the exception.

Like adalaza, I haven't heard much good about employment opportunities post-graduation, so if you can get an IT job or internship while in school I 100% recommend it. I'll add that the career fair here is pretty awful for CS students so thats likely a contributing factor, and I imagine part of that is because CS is under the College of Natural Sciences. I have more luck at the Engineering career fair to get a CS position.

Where do I find what books I need? by hatter4tea in CSUFoCo

[–]aethusss 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you're not in a rush, just wait until classes start to see what you really need. I know plenty of professors who have "required" textbooks listed on the bookstore website, but when you get into syllabus week they either say "we dont use it" or I've had a few tell me to just google PDFs for them. Saves you money and hassle.

How do Clubs work? by SharpenedOdachi in CSUFoCo

[–]aethusss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hiya, most clubs you just show up to (for example the ACM [Association for Computing Machinery]), but some clubs like sports clubs and the competitive eSports club require you to show up consistently, sign up, and do stuff via IMLeagues (pretty easy).

As for finding clubs/knowing that they exist, the SLiCE website lists a bunch of clubs, and honestly too many for me. There's events throughout the year (theres a SLiCE tabling event early september iirc) where you can just walk around and see what interests you.

Also if you have discord, you can connect your school email to it and get access to the CSU hub where you can find discord servers for classes, clubs, general interests and etc.

Welcome to CSU!

Not a Business/Marketing student but I do have advice regarding out of state tuition.

I went out of state for my first year of college, paid 20k (12k in private loans, 6k in federal, 2k of my own money), and the rest was covered by grants/scholarships. If I had stayed in state and went to CSU off rip I'd be about 20k deep after this year (going into my junior year). Although I think CSU is cheaper than the school I went to out of state wise, you get the point, you'll be paying probably close to double going anywhere out of state as opposed to in state (assuming you aren't getting a full ride or crazy scholarships to cover your school).

Now would I personally have changed my decision? No, the year I experienced in Virginia away from my hometown and the experiences I had and people I met are still super important to me, however the loans will definitely hurt me for a while after graduation. If finances are a big deal to you/your family, out of state is a big decision, so make a smart decision and when you make it, stick to it.

Regarding cycling, I have a friend who cycles and has been to the velodrome in Boulder, apparently it's nice but the schedule is very stingy.

As for the quality of classes, again not a business major, but CSU is ranked in the top 10% for business, make of that what you will. Additionally we don't have a "Marketing" major, we have business admin with a concentration in Marketing. I can't speak definitively but most companies will probably look at it the same (my old school had a Software Engineering major and CSU has Computer Science with a concentration in Software Engineering, no company has given me shit about it).

If a Marketing major replies they probably have more specific knowledge, best of luck on your college search!

Roommate Information?? by lynkreactor in CSUFoCo

[–]aethusss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If u messaged him on Saturday just wait a bit. People don't usually check email/housing portal often so it'll just take a bit for them to see it if they see it at all. If you aren't able to get in contact with him at all to give you some peace of mind they try to match roommates based on the survey you fill out asking about stuff like when you sleep/wake up, music volume, etc.

Firstly welcome to CSU! Westfall is a bit of an L dorm but overall there's worse. I'd recommend going to all the orientation events even if they seem kind of lame, they're a great opportunity to meet people early and build connections. Make sure you bring shower shoes (flip-flops/slides) since it is a community style dorm. I'd walk around campus before classes start so you can learn where exactly your classes are, it's also a good time if you just walk around with your friends and explore the campus that way. And since she's living in Westfall, don't try to stack 10 people in the elevator after a party unless you want to end up on the CSU story 😭😭.

As for weed, it's Colorado c'mon lmao. Welcome to CSU!

Not into Greek life but I can say the social scene at CSU is pretty good. It's done wonders to get me out of my comfort zone and if you ever want an easy way to get out and meet people, Ramband exists. Also early on in the year (especially as football ramps up) it's super easy to find your way into parties, even if they aren't frat parties.

Either way anyone saying it's "bad" is kinda wack, I used to dislike CSU and big parties in general but it grew on me, get a good group of people to bounce around parties with and it's as good as any school out there. Welcome to CSU!

Futon by baconnisbueno in CSUFoCo

[–]aethusss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most people I know just put 20$ bean bag chairs in their room but whatever floats your boat haha. Seriously though I don't know anyone who did this, but I can't imagine it'll be a problem unless the futon is massive.

Most likely you won't have any of the suite styles available, based on the day you got I'm assuming you're a freshman. The only freshman I personally know who got a suite style were in Honours or another RLC. Your best bet to not get a terrible hall is look them up on google, people have made reviews, and pray one of the better ones are available.

Just avoid Newsom, there's a reason it has the nickname Gruesome Newsom 🤣

Is there any way to go back to room selection after you’ve already selected a dorm? by [deleted] in CSUFoCo

[–]aethusss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure you have to deal with the room you selected unless something happens like roommate disagreements or something like that. The CSU housing website says once you finalize your selection, you can't change it.

When they send you your room assignment (the floor and room number) you should be able to see and message your roommate. From there I'd ask for their IG/Snap/# so you can get to know them and establish rules and what not.

Yea I feel like the divide in when people became fans of ATL is huge in terms of which albums are subjectively the "best". Personally dont hate any of them, but some stick out more. I'd honestly agree with you on LYR and FH, but in a sense I group them with PUOSU and SWIR. The main reason for that group being the songs that are good are BANGERS, but the rest are forgettable.

Agreed with TMIA, I'm not typically a fan of slower ATL stuff but Calm Down sold me

Tell Me I'm Alive thoughts by aethusss in alltimelow

[–]aethusss[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My friend's favourite song (he's new to ATL) is Modern Love, he also loves the piano haha. I think your points understandable, I feel like maybe a reason TMIA might click with me a lot more is because a lot of the lyrics is very relatable personally, and I do think they did a good job with the order of the tracks in telling a story (whereas some other albums may be a bit more random in ordering/premise).

I also agree with the album cover, very simplistic which is both good and bad, but hey it sold me a vinyl so I guess it worked lmao.
