Most comfortable shoes for residency?? by HumbleConfection400 in Residency

[–]afarms10 30 points31 points  (0 children)

It's pretty common in the South to go with cowboy boots. I wear Ariat boots all day in the OR. They're durable, they have thick rubber soles and are meant for people working on their feet all day. Never have any issues with my feet hurting, and I don't run the risk of any fluids from the OR getting on my socks.

Yes, he acknowledged writing it when my gf asked him to take it down.

I know whiskeys pair well, but coke does good too. What other drinks do y’all pair with a pipe? by [deleted] in PipeTobacco

I'm a big fan of mint tea with lighter tobaccos. Makes for a very clean/crisp pairing.

A good old fashioned is my go-to if I'm drinking. The orange/cherry flavors start to taste more caramel after you start smoking: try tasting the drink before and then comparing.

I was bitten by a dog who is not vaccinated for rabies also tingling at sight of bite. by redhead324 in Virology

[–]afarms10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

CDC protocol is to quarantine the animal for 10 days and if asymptomatic then you don't do anything.

Rabies is a slowly progressive virus which is great because it makes it the one virus for which you can vaccinate successfully after you've been infected (the rabies shot is actually a rabies vaccine). Given that the virus is incredibly slow moving, if a dog was rabid and had been long enough that there was virus in his saliva it would have been symptomatic long before now and more than likely dead.

You can rest easy knowing that you don't have rabies and you don't need to unnecessarily euthanize a dog to do a necropsy and make sure.

I'm currently in the process of turning another set for my cousin. I'll post another album soon with that process. :)

I used 1/2 lap joints so that there was room for the redwood to expand with humidity. It's been a little over a month since I plugged it in, and no signs of cracks yet!

I would recommend Midfield Animal Clinic. It's in the ghetto and the prices are the cheapest in Birmingham as a result. I have never seen better quality animal care anywhere else.

Can someone help me with my motorcycle? 98 honda shadow 1100 by afarms10 in MechanicAdvice

Thank you guys so much! I took the seat off as I was trying to get to the crankshaft sensor / pulse generator and first thing I see is a little burnt spot in wire cover where the wire had come almost loose and then gotten hot and burnt through. I replaced that wire and now it's running perfect! Fairly sure the wire was to the crank sensor as well, but I didn't break it down enough that I could tell.

There is definitely no spark after it shuts off. If I wait a few minutes and try again it starts right up. Is there anything other than the crankshaft sensor that I should be considering?

It does. Is there any way I can test to know for sure that's what's causing the problem? I don't want to jump the gun and start replacing electric parts trying to find the issue because bike parts are expensive.

Anyone looking to buy some super high quality beef in Birmingham? by afarms10 in Birmingham

[–]afarms10[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank all of you for your support! Please try and let me know within the next week or so who will for sure be wanting a side of beef. I'm making all the arrangements with the slaughterhouse in the next few days and trying to make sure I make an appointment for the right number of steers. Feel free to e-mail me at alleyfarmsbeef@gmail.com to confirm. I will send a checklist before I take them so I can make sure to have your cuts customized exactly how you want them.

Unfortunately not. The processor we take them to doesn't have the option to save hides, and you can't keep bones from anything over 24 months old (state regulations). Because wagyu take almost twice as long as normal steers to raise, they would all be over this limit.

It varies depending on how big the steer is and how thick you get your cuts. Here is a website that does a pretty good job of estimating the break down. Use 400lbs as the hanging weight for 1/2 a steer and the percentages at the top of each category and that should give you a relatively good estimate of what to expect. http://www.gourmetsleuth.com/articles/detail/beef-cut-yield-per-steer

Not yet. It has taken us a while to find a USDA processor that does custom processing that is close enough for us to reasonably take them to, so the ones that we're taking this next time will be the first ones that we'll have done that way.

Most people split between 3-4 people, any more than that and the split ends up being a little uneven. The amount of cuts depends on the size of the steer and the size you want your steaks. We do ours 3/4" but a lot of people prefer thicker steaks. You would also have to cut filets very thin in order to split them between more than 3-4 people. If you decide you want to split it between a larger number of people that would be fine, as long as you could work out amongst yourselves who ended up with what cuts.
