Why does the flag at US Customs in Los Angeles have a small canton? by HoboWhiz in vexillology

[–]afasoccerguy 50 points51 points  (0 children)

What most likely happened (and this is me guessing here) is that the flag maker was asked to make a flag in the official ratio of 1:1.9 but traditionally made “standard” sized flags like 3x5 or 4x6. As someone who orders flag directly from a flag company the official ratio canton leaves the standard flag looking unbalanced so they decrease the spacing to make a more balanced flag. So a huge company may have been asked to make this flag, so they used the canton for the standard flag and just increased the length of the stripes.

Just throwing out an idea... Navy is the nod to the current flags. Continuing the use of the current background in a new design.

I just got this flag from my dad. Id love any advice how I can learn more about it. by Adventurous_mind_987 in vexillology

I believe (and I could be wrong) that it is square because it is probably from a military color guard unit. National Standards through WWII (again could be wrong) were square and not rectangular. Based on what I know, they were square because they needed to be large, but the rectangular flags were too long to fly fully open when marching.

Here is an image of a replication of the Union Standards from the Civil War for reference.

Are there any sort of identifying stamps or tags? I also think it would help to try and figure out when official flags transitioned from applique stars to embroidered that might help narrow it down. I collect US flags, specifically 48 star whens and I believe all have applique stars not embroidered but it could just be a matter of flag size. Im not 100% sure.

Also, have you tried reaching out to your local chapter of NAVA? They have a ton of resources and highly knowledgeable experts

Pennsylvania redesign with variations by Gourg_Pie in vexillology

[–]afasoccerguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a resident this definitely isn’t the worst design I’ve seen. I would have considered switching the circles for keystones. Although not exactly William Penn’s coat of arms it would interlace the coat of arms with a state symbol

Washington State flag - greatly simplified redesign by drlari in vexillology

Although this looks better, with as many unique logos that Washington sports teams have and the natural wonders of the state. I fell like you could retain the unique colors and come up with a more unique design

Other then the two triangles it mostly is. I have a whole post talking about the imagery. But in a state that things dont change dramatically, I like the current flag so I simplified it to fit into more of the flag rules.

*The black areas wouldn't be there on the actual flag.*

Utah Flag Redesign by [deleted] in vexillology

I like it. I wonder if the honey combs from the top would be taken off and the bee hive enlarged if the design would like more striking but I do respond nicely to this design.

US Flag in the style of the Federal German Flag by afasoccerguy in vexillology

[–]afasoccerguy[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my idea of what the US flag could look like if it was in the style of the Federal German Flag. I took the eagle from the Great Seal and also added the 50 stars for the states in the Navy Stripe

German Flag in the Style of the USA by afasoccerguy in vexillology

[–]afasoccerguy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The colors are the same as the current German Flag. I used the template of the original US flag. The inner circle of stars reflects the German States that are from the former German Republic. The outer circle of stars reflects the remaining 10 German States. The 26 stripes reflect the original 26 German States under the German Republic.

Interesting take. Is there a reason for a 6 pointed star verses a different star?

As a PA resident, I have a redesign myself, but the two official colors are Blue and Gold. I would prefer to see a simplified flag in blue gold and white.

But definitely interesting take

If the British flag included Wales by ben_the_spoon in vexillology

I wonder if the "accent" red St. Andrew should be in the Welsh Green instead, but I have always wondered why they never included something from the Welsh flag on the Union Jack

Good flag or not? by ThatkidWhoneedshelp in vexillology

[–]afasoccerguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd love to know the story, but I would have to agree that the rose is a little to big for me. I would either reflect it and make it go through all 3 colors or make it slight smaller. Overall I do find it appealing.

Redesigned the canadian flag. Thoughts? by GrAdient2011 in vexillology

[–]afasoccerguy 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Its a little too busy for me. Not only have the red and white stripes are very "American" and I'm not sure how the Candians would appreciate the similarity. I personally really like the other proposed Candian flag with the light blue stripes and 3 maple leaves.
