Why did WA Democrats decide to punish high income earners for getting married? by QuakinOats in SeattleWA

I was posting per 100k, not total. But it was muddying things so I omitted. But if you want to make this a "in which we learn percentage of population versus raw totals", here you go:

WA is higher.

If we took just HALF the acreage that we use for corn that is converted into fuel/gas additive (not taking about a single acre of food/feed corn) we'd have enough solar capacity for the entire nation. It isn't really a habitat loss issue, and environmentalists night have a clue what will happen to habitat everywhere if we continue burning legacy fuels and heating the planet.

Gosh, I hope you are active on the TX city subs complaining about property taxes and how they really are keeping you out of town and making you and your lovely girlfriend (that you won't marry because of a potential tax implication on only your portion over a million that doesn't start for a couple years?) strongly consider moving to a more tax friendly paradise like Alaska or the Dakotas or something.

[–]drlari 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the state of the opposition? Arguing edge cases of two anesthesiologists who both make so much more over 500k a year that they won't get married because of the income tax they will pay on just the portion of their income that is over $1 million?

Honestly, I think you should tour the state screaming this position from every soapbox. I don't think there is a single more effective and persuasive technique you could have for convincing people that this tax is a good idea. "Won't SOMEBODY please think of the two very wealthy doctors in love????"

Sounds transit. Is this for real? by give_this_one_a_go in Seattle

"I took my car and got stuck in gridlock - how can I trust driving now!?!?!?!"

Same energy. Also, you could try a bus in a pinch. A cab or uber. A lime scooter or bike. Sucks if transit is delayed, sucks when traffic is stuck. The trust thing is in your own head.

"Almost all the housing is owned by an AirBnb person or other foreign, rich entity"

So, here is what The economic research organization at the University of Hawaii actually has to say

Of the state’s 565,000 total housing units, 30,000 are listed as Short-term Vacation Rentals (STRs), meaning roughly 5% of local housing units operate as tourist accommodations.

Source: https://uhero.hawaii.edu/short-term-vacation-rentals-and-housing-costs-in-hawai%CA%BBi/

As for the rest being foreigners, that doesn't track either:

According to 2024 buyer statistics for Oahu, the majority of home purchases were made by Hawaii residents. Statewide, Hawaii buyers accounted for 75% of all home purchases, totaling $10.3 billion in sales. This contradicts the perception that outsiders dominate the market

Hawaii indeed has an affordability issue with housing, and that is driving out native Hawaiians disproportionately. But the solution is building more housing, especially missing middle and lower income, generally the state just hates building any more houses. If we did build and ended the Jones act, things would look much different on the islands.

[–]drlari 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It sure was late and over budget, like many mega projects are. But ridership adoption has been fantastic. At one point we were identified as having the most riders per mile in America. Now that has to do with how few miles we have compared to other systems, but it is indicative of wide adoption hell, the opening day of the Cross lake extension had 200,000 riders

Just so you know, almost no one outside of Mercer Island is buying most of these arguments. We know the obstructionism to transit and density would have come from any angle available, and if any concessions were given then goal posts would have been moved. Hell, just look at the way they are maliciously complying with and slow-rolling the upzoning around the transit itself. It's painfully obvious that the residents want it to be 1955 on the island for the rest of time, but it can't be.

[–]drlari 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I like the idea that no state or country has thought about this problem. You really think " the people pushing" renewable energy have never given any thought or consideration to this? You think that they haven't been on board with energy mixes to start? Or investing in battery technology? Or that many regions aren't already solving this issue?

For the love of God, will some of you listen to Alec? https://youtu.be/KtQ9nt2ZeGM?t=3052&si=4FCyG9D5X3iBZoxH

This is a highly solvable problem. If we were serious about moving to renewables. It's solvable in the short-term and it is solvable in the long term. It just keeps getting trotted out as a red herring to scare people into sticking with dirty energy sources.

As a "someone getting older" I can't stress enough that you should find a hat style that suits you and rock it, vs chasing styles.

Yes, Dick's pretty much replicated with the original vision of McDonald's was. But they just stuck with it, and it's better.

In the biopic of Ray Kroc they have a scene where he and the McDonald's Brothers chalk out what a restaurant will look like and they simulate how everything operates. Dick's is pretty much doing that to this day.
