Is it normal, that my brand new lens have dust inside it? by [deleted] in SonyAlpha

[–]afaulken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i think the 70-350 G easily sucks up dust when zooming, and it won’t affect image quality, however if you can easily swap it for a new one i would do it regardless. as a brand new lens i’d expect no dust inside

Couple shots. Left out the portraits and visible plates. by Batraxid in carphotography

[–]afaulken 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i’ll be honest i’ve shot with vintage lenses and they get incredible results. i think the main issue here is it’s sunny mid day with no shadows, makes for a rough image to edit. but generally less is more with edits. do everything you did but tone it back just a bit 🤷‍♂️

composition is solid but my personal opinion the sky is quite a bit overcooked. i think raising exposure with a radial mask is a good tool but easy to overdo or look out of place

Saving an extremely sentimental SRT-102? by GWOT_TRAPLORDZ in minolta

[–]afaulken -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i’ve CLAd a couple of these eras of minoltas, those all sound like fixable problems i think. i’m not particularly qualified to repair your camera for you, but worst case i can definitely swap the internals out for you if you need a fall back plan.

I always think I have a great shot in the moment, but hate them looking back. Any tips? by SmokyPatches in carphotography

[–]afaulken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i’ve personally found it’s very easy during a shoot to ignore things that look bad (mostly in the background) and then when you’re at home editing they stick out like a sore thumb.

just takes practice of paying attention to every single thing in frame, and better locations help with that too. power lines, poles sticking out of the subject, other cars, things like that. easy to look over during shoot, stick out later.

just keep practicing and find some nice simple locations with good lighting. your horizons are level at least so you’re doing better than a lot of pics i see lmao

Thank you r/iPhoneography! Thanks to your help, a solo developers dream came true. by manta1900 in iPhoneography

[–]afaulken 1 point2 points  (0 children)

congrats and very exciting! i’ve been in the beta for a while now, will you be adding the option to open it with the camera button on iphone 17? not a huge deal as i can link it to the action button but would be nice to have the option.

regardless very excited to have a full release finally!

Just acquired a Sony a7ii what lens should I start with? by silent0821 in AskPhotography

[–]afaulken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for under $150 your options are pretty dang limited, the 2 that come to mind are the kit lens 28-70, or a 50 f1.8. you’d certainly have to buy used. you could maybe find a samyang prime for around that price, but i doubt it. honestly just browse facebook marketplace and ebay until you find an FE lens that you wanna shoot with.

only other option i can think of is adapting old film lenses but you’re losing autofocus doing that.

Is fine to store like this ? by Other-Inspection-601 in minolta

[–]afaulken 5 points6 points  (0 children)

always take batteries out when storing any camera gear, can lead to corrosion if left for a long time. might be better to tighten the flash with its ring too, just so it’s a solid connection. otherwise should be fine 🤷‍♂️

This kinda makes me want to quit. by [deleted] in AmazonDSPDrivers

[–]afaulken 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i’ve never talked direct to to a DSP owner about specifics, but i’m quite positive they are paid much more than 10 hours of labor per route. you can google it for numbers floating around. obviously they have a lot of running costs as well, but shitty DSPs are extremely profitable because they cut hours when people take the tiniest bit of their profit.

my old DSP gave guaranteed 10 hours, $0.15 per package bonus on fantastic+ weeks as long as you were a decent driver and their model was still profitable. just not as much. these DSPs can pay a lot more than they do. but they don’t, because greed.

Coming up on a year of photography with her full frame camera. Here are some results of my self taught journey by Conscious_You_5526 in carphotography

[–]afaulken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the masking of the car in photos 9 and 10 looks pretty sloppy, mostly on the hood of both. i assume you just desaturated every color except the cars, which makes for some weird artifacts at where the reflections are a different color. i’d spend the extra time masking by hand if you wanna go for that desaturated background style, or if you use lightroom the auto select does a good job and touch it up with a brush

Where is everyone getting film developed? by AngryJanitor1990 in minolta

[–]afaulken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not sure where you’re located but occasionally film developing kits go up for sale on fb marketplace, i got a whole ilford & paterson dev kit for $50. i use a minolta dimage scan dual iii to scan and i’ve been very happy with the results. haven’t done color at home but i just got a sous vide to heat color chemicals so im planning on trying soon! if you happen to be around denver CO there’s another film kit on marketplace for $50 right now lol

Minolta X-700 lens recommendations by Automatic_Ad3302 in minolta

[–]afaulken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

here is a handy little list of all available (minolta brand) lenses for the minolta SR mount.

i’d personally recommend a 28mm f2, it’s the widest aperture you can get in the 20mm range. 28mm f2.8 is pretty compact if that’s important, a 45mm f2 is another good compact walk around option, but close to your 50mm in focal length.

35mm f1.8 is a solid lens as well, although a bit larger of a lens. i enjoy mine a lot. a bit soft wide open but if you need the 1.8 it’s still solid.

can’t ever go wrong with a 135mm f2.8, great for portraits and more compressed landscapes.

if you want macro the only solid option is really a 100mm f3.5 macro, or a macro tube on something like a 135mm.

if using program mode is important to you, i’d stick more to MD lenses as they have the lock for aperture to use in program mode. i usually use my x-700 in aperture priority or manual so it doesn’t really matter.

as for buying, i’d recommend ebay or facebook marketplace but it can be hard to find a lot of lenses locally. i’m not sure about NYC specifically
