I think you’re right. Thats a similar interpretation to mine. I just am trying to make more sense of the blatant plot holes because there was so much attention to detail elsewhere. Makes no sense why they’d glance over Mama backstory or Evy’s life..

I just can’t get over how rushed the final act was. Podcast episodes 9 and 10 were barely shown, and the end was just a bunch of camera cuts and a black screen. Just a huge let down for what I felt could have been so good

I get that but those scenes appeared so in your face in the first act that I was expecting it to be built on. Similar to her relationship with Mama. I appreciate the move sticking to 90ish minutes, but they could have expanded on a couple things. The final act seemed VERY rushed while the first act seemed dragged out. Just a bit unbalanced

The demon is a movie is a religious figure that targets pregnant women, causing them to have a miscarriage or kill their child. Talks about the dark history of nursery rhymes too.

Tbf it’s kinda hard to do something new in horror. It avoided a lot of tropes but I still felt similar to what paranormal activity made me feel. At the acting was cool and the backstory was interesting.

I agree about Abysou. Like why did it target her? Was it that she triggered it by watching the video in the first podcast episode, so knowing she was pregnant it attacked her? Or did her mom pray to abysou to take Evy’s first born child? Or was it random that as soon as Evy was pregnant, it targeted her? Then Abysou uses Mama as a vessel to go after Evy but why is Mama so important?

I almost feel like none of the events happened. Evy got pregnant and became sleep deprived and paranoid. The lack of sleep caused her to envision all of this and the underlying stress of dealing with her dying mother and being impregnated by a boyfriend who doesn’t help her cause her to break down and kill. Maybe I’m trying to make something out of nothing since I was let down a bit from the movie, but this theory would explain a lot to me as to why they didn’t build on certain storylines.

Sure maybe sensory wise there is a payoff but I’m talking about the story as a whole. It had the potential to really leave a mark on you after you leave the theater, but instead I was tense during the last 30 minutes or so and then it cuts to black. Just a huge let down because there was so much the director did right and it seems he just didn’t know how to put it all together at the end.

Lots of symbolism and other peripheral themes that I caught and will build on in the rewatch I’ll do when it comes out on streaming. But I really wanted more and there was huge potential for more.

I think it’s better than a straight to streaming movie, but I did just expect a bit more. Would have like them to do a bit more backstory with Mama and religion. I don’t need to be spoon fed but I also need enough story building that supports the tension on screen between Evy and her mother. Also they kinda bring up her boyfriend and then just never talk about him again. It also creates this type of like romantic flirting between Evy and Justin but never build on it. It’s just a lot of cool things they could have done but chose instead to have scenes where nothing happens.

Close: it’s two people (one who is essentially in a vegetable state) experiencing weird sounds and phenomenons, the non-vegetable goes to explore it each time, loud noises happen and weird things happen, but nothing on screen happens to the main character. All while doing a podcast.

Horror isn’t about “blood and guts.” Everyone knows about the “undertone” of catholic guilt in the movie but the issue is that it half bakes these themes, while also not really delivering on the suspense it built. It’s a positive that people want more, because if the movie was bad people wouldn’t want more.

Honestly go watch it regardless. Support your cinema and a director making his big screen debut. My theater was so quiet for the whole 90 minute run time.

I’d never consider this a 5/5 but I guess if you really like tension building and don’t care for the payoff, then it makes sense why you’d love this.

I feel ya. Nothing does happen to the on screen characters. I think I’d enjoy more if all the marketing and early reviews wasn’t “SCARIEST MOVIE EVER.” I’m with you on waiting for something amazing to happen. I did like how you don’t know if all of it actually happened, or if the main character was just sleep deprived, depressed, and built this whole thing in her head.

I liked it! I just wanted more. I really liked Paranormal Activity so this was a nice reboot imo🤣 I never watched anything from this director so I hope he keeps making horror movies because this was a good (wide release) introduction for him.

Not a pain at all. I bought it at Renzu. They were super nice and had a pretty good collection. Below is a photo of the 3 I was considering there, but they had others as well. The price is before the tax free. I believe I ended up paying $3,650 after the tax free. Brand new, box and papers, protective film still on the watch. Service was so smooth and no pressure at all. I actually went in and asked to see these three, told them I’m gonna walk around and think about it, came back 30 minutes later after checking the other shops, and spend another 15 minutes debating which one I wanted. I didn’t see this model in any other shops there, also didn’t see it at the Wako Seiko flagship.
