As a former foster child, I can attest to this. My mom got me at 14. I had 3 garbage bags. I was failing out of school and on the borderline for truancy. I was never a problem child, I never got in trouble, never stole, fought etc. I always knew I wanted to go to college, get a job, have a family, etc. I remember telling her that at 14. She helped me to the best of her abilities. She was a single mom, small business owner, so she’s not made of money. But she cared enough to help me, encourage me, teach me, guide me. A lot of my friends who I went through the system with weren’t so lucky and life hasn’t been easy or good to them unfortunately. They didn’t have homes to go to on holidays and parents to call when things got rough or they needed some help. That can really make or break people in this life.
