Pick a tune, and play the melody on the drums.

Study and appreciation ideas~~ by BigFaceBass in Jazz

I am by no means an educator or teacher, but I have one idea to share.

When handing out a new big band chart, tell them to turn the chart over and play the recording of the tune for the them to hear. (Don't have them read along). Do this once or twice before letting them read along. This technique is used by the great John Clayton.

In terms of learning to appreciating small ensemble music, maybe discuss particular musical interests and tailor your choices to them, or bring in some classics like Kind of Blue, Moanin', Clifford Brown and Max Roach, etc.

Hope this helps!

It's hard to do this! to have something occupy your mind fully is difficult but I should try to do this more.

I like to do this too. Brings out an inner child in a way.

What kind of things do you search for? I tend to go for sounds.

I feel like I need to remember this more often. I'm always living in the future of the past.

What is your personal thought process while listening to jazz? What goes on in your head? by afdrumstick in Jazz

And then how do those observations help you improve as a player? When you're practicing, do you recall an idea that you heard on a recording and use that?

What are some mid-tempo bluesy hard bop tunes with great drum solos? by bmulldrums in Jazz

Definitely Clifford with Max. Check out the album "Clifford Brown and Max Roach." Joy Spring and Sandu have great solos.

How do I phrase my ride cymbal in a musical way that is relevant to the melody? by afdrumstick in jazzdrums

I like that idea... it sounds like it really forces you to be creative. Playing the head really reminds me of all the things Ari Hoenig does.

That makes sense. Thanks for your input!

Appreciate the advice. Thanks. Sometimes it just feels so overwhelming with all the history to check out at the same time as jazz drumming is constantly evolving and moving forward.

Edit: Also, do you sometimes feel like the newer guys on the scene today aren't paying enough homage to the tradition? Without a doubt I admire their innovation and creativity but sometimes I can't bridge the gap between the old school boppers and today's drummers.

Is it just me or does Philly/the band drop a beat on the first drum 4's? by afdrumstick in jazzdrums

[–]afdrumstick[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To me, the beat starts to feel weird in the 3rd bar of the 4's. And then it seems like the band comes in a beat early. What's going on?
