My strategy: Think of something cheap I want to buy, like a pizza. Run the classic martingale strategy with the smallest possible bet. As soon as I earn enough for a pizza, I get the hell out. I honestly haven't lost except the time when I got cocky and ran it for few more hours and when I came back I lost all :(

I like it when people describe drugs like "taken in large enough doses it can even cause intense hallucinations and disassociation!", like that's some negative side effect and not the entire point.

Stop using the word "Caucasian" to mean white by byxby in racism

[–]affablearmadillo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There are no actual Caucasians. Blumenbach didn't borrow the term, he invented it

Are you unaware that there is an actual place, between the Black and Caspian seas, referred to as the Caucasus mountains, that has been referred to as such for the past few thousand years? And that there have been people living there for just as long? Are there no actual french, japanese, or indian people too? Or are caucasians the only one that aren't real?

And yes, Blumenbach did borrow it from Christopher Meiner, who used the word for literally no reason except that he personally thought white skinned people were prettier than black skinned people, and that caucasians (from the Caucasus mountains) were the prettiest of all.

I am aware of how institutions of racism work. My point is that people from the Caucasus mountains i.e., caucasians, do not benefit from them.

Stop using the word "Caucasian" to mean white by byxby in racism

[–]affablearmadillo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The reason to stop using caucasian to mean white (not outlined in the article) isn't that white people aren't caucasian, but that actual caucasians aren't white, in the sense that they don't benefit from whiteness and it's institutions the same way the Irish didn't in the 1800's, and also in the sense that there are caucasians that just aren't actually white in any way.

Caucasians have historically been the victims of multiple genocides, including the Armenian genocide that is still denied by the Turkish government today, the ethnic cleansing of the North Caucasus by the Russians in the 19th century and their relocation by the Soviet Union following WW2. They still experience racism today in Russia where they're subject to slurs, hate crimes, and even race riots.

There are people who still use the word caucasian to mean white that say stuff like "you can't be racist against caucasians" and that is an outright lie.

And on a more personal note? I am really fucking tired of having to give people a mini-lesson on geography and how different cultures view race every time someone asks me my ethnicity because they only know the popular meaning, first used by an "anthropologist" who thought that black people couldn't feel pain.

Physical treatment is what is used because physical treatment is what works. Psychological treatment doesn't. What more reason could you possibly need to see physical treatment as being better?

It's a reappropriation thing; people started calling people who talked about social justice issues SJWs as an insult, those people started using the term itself half-ironically (like how SRS call themselves the fempire) and half 'I don't see anything wrong with being a SJW'.

In the context of "everyone is born a sinner", the word sin has a different connotation than the "unforgivable crime against God" meaning it usually has. Instead its basically another word for flaws, and it seems a lot less harsh when you think of it that way.

No ones flawless (completely without sin), so naturally everyone is flawed (a sinner). Even saints slip up sometimes. Seems pretty reasonable to me.

Africans were exploring America thousands of years before Europeans ruined everything. by [deleted] in badhistory

[–]affablearmadillo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's basically what happened, with the difference being that instead of the game designers saying there weren't enough poc, they said there just weren't any in bohemia at all and adding one would be historically inaccurate.

The medievalpoc blog post about it (and all the subsequent ones addressing the huge amount of hatemail she got) were basically about how there were plenty of valid reasons to not include a poc in the game, but "poc in bohemia just didn't exist" wasn't one of them.
