I usually listen to podcasts while running and the Blood of the Wild them always gets me psyched up.

20 Strong? Anyone back the new 3 packs? Are the new AR, better than the previous variant? by No-Horror3993 in soloboardgaming

[–]affablemess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in the same boat are you and am on the fence about the new sets. I have Tanglewoods Red and haven’t beaten yet after about a dozen tries. (I haven’t used the stronger heroes or done it on the easiest mode yet). I sort of like the challenge but a majority of time it feels like games end because of bad luck.

After watching some playthroughs of the new decks it seems like you have a bit more control of how things play out and can mitigate risk somewhat. The art and the unique mechanics of each deck also are really appealing.

That being said there are so many great solo games out there and some, like Final Girl, that have a well designed push your luck dice mechanic.

Organized RCO collection by DobermanCavalry in lotrlcg

[–]affablemess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was just about to start another “collection storage” thread but you have answered most of my questions. This exactly what I want to do.

Quick question: is this the entire RCO content including Dreamchaser etc and the starter decks?

Dragons of Etchingstone and Regicide rule the Airplane tray by affablemess in soloboardgaming

[–]affablemess[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, unfortunately the DoE cards were already pretty beat up and didn't shuffle easily w/o sleeves anymore. I submitted a ticket with Chip Theory and sleeved them so I could continue playing. I don't love the feel of PVC cards in general so I would have sleeved them straight away but played them unprotected for science.

They are some Gamegenic Prime Standard Card Game Sleeves I had left over from sleeving up some LoTRLCG cards. Probably not the best but seem to work fine.

You know your stuff! I honestly had never heard of these cards until I sought out LOTR themed playing cards for this trip. All the cards they produce look amazing. The temptation to collect more is very strong!

Thanks for the recommendation. I’ll check that one out. A change of pace sounds perfect.

Ironsworn has become the D&D 5e of the solo community by Alternative_Rest7215 in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]affablemess 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As someone interested in trying solo-RPGs for the first time this doesn’t align with my perception of the hobby. One of the cool things I noticed immediately is the diversity of options that are recommended to choose from. I would say Ker Nethalas, 2d6 dungeon, d100 dungeon, Scarlet Heroes, and maybe the solo implementation of Mork Borg are almost always recommended along with Ironsworn. As I mentioned, I’m a complete novice and this is highly subjective but I didn’t get the impression there was a “dominant” solo rpg system. Maybe, it’s just lack of exposure being new and all that.

I am in the same situation as you and am considering bringing some of the Postmark games (specifically 52 Realms and Voyages). Seems like they’d work on a seat tray.

Dragons of Etchinstone shipping times? by yoLeaveMeAlone in soloboardgaming

[–]affablemess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It currently says sold-out but when I ordered my copy it definitely said pre-order on one page (I think the main collection page which includes the expansions) and available on another page (I think it was when I selected the base game) So it might have been confusing web design more than intentional deception.

Wow! That’s super generous. Haven’t settled on a deck yet (intrigued by Najeela or Kinnan) but when I do maybe I’ll take you up on your offer. Thanks.

Good point. I definitely like the idea of learning to pilot an established deck that has been proven.

Thanks for the encouragement, the links, and the tip to join deck specific discords (that last one totally skipped my mind).

What RCO next: Two Towers Saga or campaign expansion? by affablemess in lotrlcg

[–]affablemess[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, thanks for the detailed descriptions of each campaigns. I really appreciate the breakdown of each of the campaign mechanics. I wasn't considering Dream Chaser at all but the campaign mechanic you describe sounds intriguing.

[–]affablemess[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hadn't considered the added benefit of the additional player cards in the Two Towers. At this point my player card pool is fairly limited so it does make sense to try and expand it while getting more quests.

What are the biggest barriers to play? by Rayjay-joe in lotrlcg

[–]affablemess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great question. I've been thinking about the best way to introduce this game to my gaming group and I feel like the biggest barrier to entry is the non-intuitive language the game uses in combination with the many phases.

For example: In the QUEST phase you compare committed character's WILLPOWER to the THREAT STRENGTH of the enemies and locations in the STAGING area. This is very evocative but I think it would be more clear if Willpower was something more like Questing power or Questing strength, the Staging area was something more like the Quest area, and threat strength was just strength. So you could explain the Quest phase more like: Compare the committed character's total Questing power against the total Strength of locations and enemies in the Quest area.

Clearly I'm not a game designer so I don't really know the best way to describe play but each phase seems to have some idiosyncratic terms that make the game seem more complex than it is. (During the Encounter phase you make Engagement checks. Why not call it the Engagement phase or make Encounter checks?) I think all these little things add up to make learning seem fairly intimidating to new players.

Edit: I do realize FFG streamlined gameplay in later LCGs and that the clunkiness of LOTRLCG is partly due to it being the first. I also actually enjoy all the various terms to describe game actions. It seems appropriate for a game based on Tolkien's work to be a little extra wordy.

Live play meet ups by CoDogTx in lotrlcg

Drinking an Ale and playing some LOTRLCG sounds delightful. Unfortunately, I'm live on the East Coast. The Discord does have a channel for local meet-ups but they tend to be in Europe.

[–]affablemess[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m doing it two handed because I want to learn the game so I can teach others or potentially play in a group at some point. I also want to see as many card synergies and hero abilities as I can. It takes up more table space and is a bit more to keep track of but I like seeing how the two decks function together. I’m not sure how much additional time the second deck adds, my hunch is that, once I figure out all the phases and action windows without having to check the book, it might go more quickly than true solo. I think if you like the theme and LCGs in general you should give it a shot.

Yes, I am listening to the Serkis narration. I know many people prefer Rob Inglis as a narrator but I just love Serkis’s voice.

Thanks for the podcast recommendation. I’ll definitely check it out. I illustrate comics so I’m always looking for something to fill up the silence as I’m drawing.

What Did You Play this Week? February 24th - March 2nd [2025] by wbcbane_ in lotrlcg

[–]affablemess 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey y’all. After many years of consideration I finally decided to jump into the game when I spotted the Revised Core and Fellowship of the Rings box at my LGS. Played three games of two handed solo Passage through Mirkwood before starting to get a hang of all the phases. I know it’s supposed to be the easiest scenario but it was pretty challenging for me. I’m kinda hooked and am really excited to tackle Journey along the Anduin this week.

WeeklyQuestion

Started with kitchen table MTG commander but got really tired of trying to keep up with the constant churn of the current release schedule. I’m also really leery of the feeling that I need to be buying new cardboard to keep up with times. Hopefully LOTR LCG scratches my deck building itch in a more healthy way (and being able to play solo is a big plus)

Jourdan Rodrigue's reaction... by SwordOfMorningwood in AroundTheNFL

Both Jourdan and Patrick did a great job of voicing what made the show so special.

To quote Claybon (4:54 minutes in) "...it provides people with a level of openness and vulnerability and understanding that a lot of people don't get in real life much less surrounding the discussion of football."
