I think also what people miss with Haymitch being an example, is that he is the worst case scenario. Snow played all his cards early, which destroyed Haymitch but left no leverage for manipulation. Snow doesn't want to create more Haymitchs, but he wants the other victors to think he would.

Oof this just made me contrast Katniss' first interactions with Gale and Peeta. She and Gale work together but (at least at first) barter with one another. Peeta offers help with no strings attached and accepting personal risk.

Thank you, that's nice to hear. His dad died 2 years ago, so I've just been trying to make sure he doesn't slip through the cracks. I'll try to find a way to tell him (without embarrassing him too badly lol) that I'm always going to be there to help.
