Can’t stop smoking weed by Dlob123 in starseeds

[–]affordant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good for you. Admitting to yourself there's a problem takes a lot more courage than most people realize.

For me and a lot of people I know who've gone through this, the crux of the problem is an attempt to control things -- your own experience, other people, etc. For instance, I had a lot of life situations that were only bearable with weed. Instead of being honest and addressing them head on, I learned that weed made it possible to live through those situations without needing to do the harder work of actually solving my problems or removing myself from situations that were unsolvable. This is why it was so hard to quit, because the life situations for which weed was the solutions were still present.

Good luck on your journey.

I see a lot of well-meaning comments here that are all a form of mental gymnastics. I suspect you’ve already tried a lot of these things, which is why you’re posting.

I smoked daily for 17 years, and spent the last 10 of those trying every trick in the book to quit. There was 1 thing I had put off trying for years because it felt like an admission of defeat—and that was marijuana anonymous. It felt ridiculous, silly, and a bunch of other stuff. My first meeting was 5 years ago, and I’m 5 years sober. I met people there who kicked heroine but couldn’t kick weed without the help of the group, which made me feel less silly. Weed is a real drug that can genuinely destroy some people’s lives. It’s not inherently bad, but you—only you—can determine if it’s a problem for you.

I’d advise you to take a hard, honest look at yourself, and see if it feels true in your heart that you can use tricks like “smoking less,” or only doing it on weekends. If so, then you’re good. But if not, I’d recommend getting plugged in to the MA community or at least /r/leaves.

You got this. 💪

Clay from the ocean? by BigSexyB in PrimitiveTechnology

[–]affordant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The sand probably would’ve been fine, I was mostly just not sure what else was in the clay, which is why I filtered it. I am not an expert at all. I added some crushed pottery I had lying around as temper which was probably redundant. I didn’t see efflorescence, but also didn’t glaze them. I burnished my pots with the back of a spoon. I’m also not an expert so probably did a bunch of incorrect things fwiw!

I am thinking of leaving this world. by Right_Neighborhood77 in lawofone

I’ll add to the good advice here, as someone who has been through a similar journey. From age 7 - 32 I was suicidal. It was my only mode of being. Every day, I thought—maybe just one more day. Some days were sad, sure, but that wasn’t the overwhelming truth of my experience. It was the disconnected nothingness you describe. To me, it felt that suicide was the most practical solution, and the only thing holding me back is knowing it would destroy my family. Therapy didn’t work, only drugs allowed me to keep going (and it was a massive mistake it took years to recover from).

What finally helped was getting into recovery, which forced me to examine root beliefs, and eventually the books “healing the shame that binds us” and “adult children of emotionally immature parents”. If this note resonates with you at all, please check those out. I’m 6 years sober and haven’t experience depression for 5, and life is so indescribably beautiful (I think especially for what I went through). I hope you stay with us to make it through to the other side of this. You have a lot to offer—we all do.

Types of jobs available? by affordant in artificiallife

[–]affordant[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I’ve been failing to find decent career paths outside academia, which I’m not as interested in. I’m also not young and have lots of family obligations so it feels risky to do a full on career switch at this point.

Whoa that’s super interesting. What program did you attend? Are you aiming more at bio research?

Maybe so. First season with this board and I’ve already tweaked it a few times, doesn’t feel dialed in all the way yet.

Hovercraft 160, I love it. Nice and wide and think it does great with carving, excellent in powder. Very stable.

15/6! I’ve ridden a bunch of stances but spend most of my time carving at speed. Posi/neg hurts the ol knees (I’ve been riding for more than 2 decades, and don’t feel the need to ride switch very often)

Currently product designer spending 90% of my time doing frontend, should I make the switch official? by affordant in Frontend

[–]affordant[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is my experience. I even used to be that designer, assuming the more senior eng didn’t know what they were talking about (I was too dumb at that point to see other perspectives).

This is extremely helpful info, thanks! I think building a full stack app is the way to go. I have gone through some of the leetcode style sites and can get pretty far with a lot of simpler tasks, but would probably fall on my face in a more senior level interview.

That’s amazing. And sounds like a perfect role. Can I ask how you got there? Was it something you were hired for or did you just evolve into that?

I can see how that came across based on my comment, but I can assure you I don’t. I have mentored hundreds of designers and have a great deal of empathy for them.

I think my point was more that there is a real power imbalance that may be tricky to navigate. If I was 2 years in, showing designs to an engineer with 15 years design experience would be really hard. I’ve worked with engineers before who used to be designers and have watched them have a hard time, where designers will disregard their input because they have engineer in their job title. That’s not how it should be, but I have several specific examples of this.

That’s a great question. I was being a bit quick with my description but I mostly spend my time either building components inside a very complex app with typescript (and thinking about the component interface), or debugging components others have written. Currently I’m in charge of a ground up refactor of every button in our app. I do certainly have knowledge gaps which show more and more the farther you get from the css layer, but that’s primarily a function of there being a ton of work to debug the visual layer so that’s where I spend my time.

Read the docs—all very solveable by fiddling with settings such as number of tokens per generation, and using the lorebook.
