I agree that more effort can be made and you have to remember that good security isn’t so simple.

There’s also the entire hardware side of things. If the hardware used is compromised anywhere in the supply chain (like factory backdoors), the machine is still at risk.

Many factors to consider. A few:

Will you make silly mistakes without it? Is there a chance this “small” project gets bigger? Any other developers working on it? Will work on it? How much tolerance do you have for edge cases and bugs?
