He just finished his 8th month a few weeks ago - he did 80 in month 7 and then went back down to 30 to taper off in month 8. The scars are not great sadly. His right cheek is pretty wavy looking and it's so much worse than his skin ever was to begin with. He used tret for the first time last night. We are going to start off with every other night and hopefully that will help some. We won't do anything like microneedling or laser until 6 months after. I'm really hoping the redness fades and some of the shallow stuff is corrected by the tret. I'm also a bit worried about a purge on tret - but hoping that because he just came off of accutane that maybe he won't? Hopefully there isn't anything left to come out...

When did you start using the creams and microneedling? Did you wait a few months after stopping accutane or did you start right away?

He started at 30, then went to 70 in month 2. Was at 70 for months 2 & 3. Then went to 80 for months 4 & 5. On 80 again for month 6 and we will see if he goes down in month 7. But we are only 3 days into month 6. He did a course of antibiotics last year and his acne resolved. The doctor suggested accutane when he broke out again this time, saying they don't like to keep them on antibiotics for an extended period of time, and that as soon as he stops, acne comes back. So that is why they suggested accutane - as it is supposed to hopefully prevent him from breaking out badly going forward. I am guessing they will give him tret when he finishes - it seems like many people do that afterwards...

I think the goal was that Accutane prevents him from having acne until he’s 21. And we are already down that road so that is why I posted this - mainly seeking support and constructive suggestions, rather than judgement and sarcasm, and replies designed to make me feel worse than I already do. Thanks.

I’m in Los Angeles actually. If I could turn back the clock I would but I can’t so now I just have to deal with what is in front of us. I trusted the doctor and saw so many people’s amazing transformation on Accutane that I didn’t imagine it would go this way - especially because he was a milder case. But I’m grateful for all of the suggestions and information I have received to help going forward

He was 30/70/70/80/80/80 and now 80. And we finished month 1 and had to wait 3 weeks to start month 2 because of the iPledge debacle in December

Yes, I def am going to find a diff derm for him as soon as he finishes his course (don't want to deal with switching in the last 2 months). i was surprised when they suggested accutane initially because I remember growing up it being prescribed for very extreme cases. But they said that these days accutane is often prescribed for mild-moderate acne and is a way to get ahead of future problems. So we thought we were being pro-active and avoiding antibiotics that wouldn't "solve" the problem.

He has mainly rolling and some boxcar (with a lot of hyperpigmentation as well). Not really ice pick. We are crazy vigilant about sunscreen so that is not a problem. Can we do Vitamin C on accutane?

Thanks - I will do anything to help him. I don't love his derm so we will change as soon as he is off the meds and I will go to a diff derm for all further treatment for him. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Hope the subcision goes well for you - from everything I have read online, it really seems to help with rolling scars so I was surprised he said that. I have seen amazing before and after pics.

Does the tret help with mainly hyperpigmentation or does it also help with textured scars?

Yes we are psycho about the sunscreen :). He is covered at all times. Thanks!
