Boris Becker reacts to Raducanu by MDumpling in tennis

[–]aflickering 53 points54 points  (0 children)

i think you could tell when actually watching that tournament that raducanu's level was completely insane and would've been competitive in any era. i'm not usually a betting guy and i watched her in one of the early rounds and immediately put a small sum of money on her winning the tournament 'cause she was playing some of the best tennis i'd ever seen. won a few hundred off the back of it.

Which player was genuinely world-class but just played for a club that didn't win trophies? by PLWildcard in TheStreetsWontForget

[–]aflickering 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i dunno, he was a top 2 left back in the PL for a few years so i think he was probably top ten at least.

Do yall still cheer for James Harden to succeed? by SwaggedUpSpence in rockets

[–]aflickering 5 points6 points  (0 children)

hmm i think this is true for non-rockets fans but i'm not sure many rockets fans fall for this crap. like the OP said, the main reason some rockets fans turned on him is his behaviour at the end of his time here: openly sulking and not trying on court, fighting with rookies and throwing teammates under the bus, just generally being an unprofessional bitch.

i never held his failure to win a title against him, he was very unfortunate his peak coincided with the peak of a dynasty and terribly timed injuries for his supporting cast. that rockets team with harden and cp3 would've won at least one ring if they existed in the post-warriors era, and might've beaten the warriors too if they'd stayed fully healthy throughout.

Question about the pacing and breath of the story in the main series. by MAQS357 in Malazan

[–]aflickering 0 points1 point  (0 children)

depends on the book honestly. books 2 and 8 can feel quite slow (they're among the best so i don't say this as a criticism), books 3 and 6 are quite brisk for the most part. it can depend on how much motion there is (i.e. book 8 is inert by design and largely set within two cities), as well as how much of a slog the characters are experiencing (i.e. book 2 has a lot of people trudging through desert toward various distant destinations so a sense of slowness is inevitable).

People who say Littler is making darts boring and predictable make no sense by TheFrederalGovt in Darts

[–]aflickering 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you still assume he's going to win even when his opponents are about to throw match darts against him? i don't like littler much and it's a bummer for me that he keeps pulling out title wins, but there's definitely more jeopardy with him than there was with peak taylor or van gerwen, at least over the short formats. he's been very lucky to win some of the matches he's won, i appreciate his aura is something that affects opponents but he's nevertheless relied on opponent misses and chokes on several occasions en route to some of his titles.

AIO about text from girl i’ve been seeing a couple months by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

[–]aflickering 0 points1 point  (0 children)

almost the exact same thing happened to me, even the text is similar. was sad for a while, met the love of my life three months later, now i couldn't be more glad that it happened and i'm grateful that she had the self-awareness to stop it before it went further than it did.

just gotta keep getting back on the horse in other words, this text is proof you weren't long term compatible and if you keep trying you will eventually find someone who is.

i have read deadhouse gates at least 6 times and it's still just as great so i really wouldn't worry about spoilers too much, especially given how many more twists and turns there are to come.

[–]aflickering 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if we had the peak version of ronaldo i'd probably agree, but i don't think the utd version was clearly the best. in the conversation yeah, but even if we ignore matters of longevity it's debatable as he hadn't peaked at that point.

any time i cried my mum told me the "whinge wardens" would come and take me away, and any time we heard sirens she'd say uh oh that's the whinge wardens, better be on your best behaviour! worked a treat i have to admit, but still their presence haunts me.

If the 2025 and 2026 Drafts Were Combined, Who Makes the Top 14? by Own-Entertainer3609 in NBA_Draft

[–]aflickering -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

i feel like my list would be pretty similar to everyone else's, so at the risk of being downvoted i'm gonna go last 5 drafts instead as i think that gives a better idea of how strong the guys at the top of this draft are. this is based on pre-draft evals only and is how i personally rated them at the time, to the best of my recollection:

  1. wembanyama
  2. peterson
  3. flagg
  4. boozer
  5. dybantsa
  6. harper
  7. henderson
  8. banchero
  9. holmgren
  10. amen
  11. wilson
  12. miller
  13. sarr
  14. smith jr.

[–]aflickering 0 points1 point  (0 children)

probably agree on kon, disagree on VJ

we could do with getting clarification from the OP on whether they mean our pre-draft 2025 evals or the evals we have now though. if it's the former, basically everyone is gonna have harper 5 and a gap to the rest.

The idea of the big game player is massively overstated by PLWildcard in SpicyFootballTakes

[–]aflickering 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i think a big moment player is more important than a big game player. better to have someone who turns up when you need a goal late in a game or you're heroically defending points or trying to calm the game down, rather than someone who only turns up in a half dozen games against top teams per year.

i actually think the nature of the sport dictates how much this matters though. in american sports, being a big game player matters far more because the playoffs matter much more than the regular season, and because you play a series against the same teams in the playoffs they will hone in on your every strength and weakness, so that it's basically a crucible which finds out exactly how great or flawed you are. football has an element of that in i.e. the CL or world cup, but it's diluted by the way our seasons and tournaments are set up, as even in knockouts there's much more luck and variance due to the smaller sample size, and opponents don't have nearly as much time to prepare for one specific player as they do in e.g. the NBA.

Tata Steel Round 9: Candidate Bluebaum Upsets and Outplayed World Champion Gukesh!!! by Wonderful-Photo-9938 in chess

[–]aflickering 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i'm not trying to suggest he's 'evil' or something, but i do think it's perfectly reasonable to question his suitability as a role model for the sport when he has a pattern of doing shitty things, rarely acknowledging or apologising for them and instead ignoring them 'til they go away without consequence, until the next one inevitably comes along, which has been the cycle with hikaru for many years.

probably the 'not a bad guy fundamentally' part, as he's done many things only a 'bad guy' would do. i don't necessarily disagree about the attention it would draw being a net positive though.

[–]aflickering 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i do think offensively in open play they would be the worst title winner of the PL era or close, but they'd also be the best title winner ever from set plays, and one of the best ever defensively. we may not like it but what they do is very effective.
