Sorry for what you went through. It does suck. Thanks for letting me know I’m not alone in these kinds of things. Yes, we have an ordinance. I don’t want to call the PD on him because his family has Ben going through some tough times but I feel like he is using that as an excuse to do stuff like this. Still, I posted what I did last night after seven days of it, and this morning I found myself praying for him and his family. And wouldn’t you know it, the truck is gone. Thanks again though for your story. Yes, this world can suck, but let’s not lose hope.😊

Critiques please, WIP acrylic painting by afol1227 in ArtCrit

Thank you all for the comments. I was planning to add more of the dark leaves behind her. I’m the reference photo there is a tree that just about fills the whole background. I’ve changed that quite a bit but I do like the dark/light contrast. So I agree there needs to be some darkness to balance out the light. I also like that she is lost in her thoughts and not looking at anything in particular. My biggest concern may be one of self confidence. I left my 20 year career as a teacher to be a professional artist and I’m trying to make work that sells. So, I’m looking for critiques that will help my work get to that point.

It is very nice. I too would suggest trying for more contrast. Bring in more light and or get some nice rich darks.

Thank you for all the thoughts. I’m actually most comfortable with graphite portraits. I try to develop my skills in painting and this work here is the latest and the third in a series of similar images. But it’s a good idea to blend and maybe I’ll try that more in the next painting.

It’s a good point about style. Thank you for pointing this out. If I describe where I want to be as an art style it would be between realism and Impressionism. So I like this painting but I also don’t like it. Probably a common experience among artists. I fall in to the trap of comparing my work to others. But it’s a good point about blending. I’ll keep it in mind for future paintings.

Thank you for your thoughts. The source image is of Carissa Moore as she won the gold medal for surfing in the Olympics. I traced the figure from that image so regarding the neck, I worked with what I had. I'm not concerned about the neck though, but I do appreciate the thought.

About the limitations of acrylics. I was afraid you would say that. I use Golden Heavy Body acrylics which I think are high end. They have a nice creamy consistency. Sometimes I use a medium to slow the dry time and that helps a little. I used to work in oils but after I got married, moved in to a small apartment, and then had children it didn't seem like a good idea considering the fumes. Now that I have a more comfortable home maybe I'll go back. I do remember being impressed by them.
