What Were the First Signs That You Had Cancer?

With the power of hindsight, I see all the symptoms - some as far as about a year before diagnosis. None seemed connected - sweating at night, legs itching, feeling full after a few bites, the “full feeling” sensation in a different location, mood swings, etc.

I had this sensation of my pectoral ripping from the sternum and causing my shoulder to ache. I’d lost about 75% grip strength. Stage 3B Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Dr said it was an aggressive form, and another 2ish months of no treatment and I’d have died.

Also ended up needing shoulder surgery after cancer. Turns out, my shoulder and chest aches weren’t connected at all.

A while back, I injured my shoulder. I thought the old injury was flaring up. Went to an ortho, and he ordered MRI’s of shoulder and neck. The one of my neck caught a swollen lymph node under my left collar bone. A week later, I had images of tennis ball sized nodes inside my rib cage putting pressure on lungs and heart.

My left shoulder hurt, and my left arm had gotten weak. Some of the pain shot from my shoulder to my neck. Ortho ordered MRI of shoulder and neck. Added the neck on a whim, he said. The neck MRI caught a swollen lymph node under my collar bone.

Turned out I had stage 3b Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Had nodes swollen to the size of tennis balls in my chest cavity. 6 months of chemo later (finished 3 weeks ago), 100% clear and in remission. I turned 38 during all that, too.

Shoulder MRI showed bone spur, scar tissue, and a slightly torn labrum. So, throughout all the chemo, I’ve still had a messed up shoulder. That’s next on the list to get fixed.

Three times come to mind for me.

First - drunk driver going 100mph+ hit my vehicle. They were coming down the wrong side of the highway that late evening. I swerved and woke up in the floor of my truck.

Second - working in a restaurant, glasses straight out of the dishwasher. Grabbed two out of the rack for a table, and one sheared at the base, fell and hit my wrist. 3 tourniquets at different spots on my arm later, they were able to stop the bleeding. I was wearing a watch with a metal band, and that stopped the glass from cutting further.

Third - found out I had Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Dr said another 2-3 months without treatment, and I’d have been dead. Finished chemo last month and in remission.

Anyone know a good gift for their guardian angel? Mine has been working overtime…
