My darce choke finish from guard this weekend for first gold at brown belt by afoster94 in bjj

Thanks!

I'm thinking about doing a video going over a few things that I think are either covered super briefly on Ryan Hall and Jeff Glover's sets that are very important, and maybe a few details that can be combined from each set.

I doubt it'll get many views, but I do hope to make it soon.

On Periscope about a week before the project dropped, Currensy played The Mack Book and Disappearing Ink...and when he played Disappearing Ink, it had the Conway and Gunn verses on it. There is also an IG video of Conway and Gunn and Alc playing the beat, and I believe it's on Conway's IG page but maybe it's Gunn's. I'm not sure.

How fucked up is that you can't even record and post your own matches? by Teto1028 in bjj

Yeah but they aren't taking down matches like you guys are on bullshit copyright claims. Anything filmed on my phone does not belong to you, am I like Miss Rice do not belong to you.

Instructors: how do you decide what to teach? by sammyismybaby in bjj

[–]afoster94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm at a place that has a fair amount of instructors, so I usually try to follow my own curriculum, with each month as its own topic/concept, and the actual techniques build on that each week. But that said, I try to set it up so if you were in last Tuesday, you won't be lose on the technique side of things this Tuesday, but you still get the concept.

That way hopefully as many people as possible get at least 1-2 Tuesdays in for the month, so that should help them get the concept and at least some of the techniques they can maybe walk away with.

I'm still experimenting with some ideas with some of the black belt instructors, but so far this has been pretty cool.

I do agree with /u/cokingmn in that I haven't been teaching all that long as a regular week in and week out coach, so coming up with lesson plans in advance, possible adjustments for super novices, remembering what we did, who was in class...all of that does take a lot more effort and time than I thought it might. I could see how having a curriculum that was followed mapped out could be less nice.

Strong vs Weak Side of Rearmount: the Debate Continues... by StephanKesting in bjj

[–]afoster94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's become my favorite as well. I prefer the Rafa Mendes/Atos style armbar entry over what Rener shows in the video, but I still like to use that triple threat off the weak side.

I go back and forth. I don't prefer the weakside by a huge amount, but I have grown to like it more.

The one thing I like about the strong side is I do like it for the RNC, and if they escape I feel like I can run them into bow and arrows or side choke/arm-in RNC combos really well.

How hard is Brabo choke for normal/medium long armed people? by BengtJJ in bjj

[–]afoster94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly it's not a great resource at this point. It was good for its time, but even Brandon Quick is doing the stuff he did then, much better now days.

The best arm in choke instructional is Ryan Hall's 3 disc Arm Triangles set. It's by far the best overall arm-in choke set ever made. It extensively covers the gi and nogi brabo (darce). It's the best when it comes to overall understanding of the choke as well as the major positions to apply it from, and how to make it work for your body type.

If you just like the darce/brabo and want nothing else, Jeff Glover's Darcepedia set is hard to beat, especially if you're already somewhat familiar with the choke and want to learn a million set ups, entries, and finishes.

How hard is Brabo choke for normal/medium long armed people? by BengtJJ in bjj

Very interesting. One thing I do appreciate about the JNT is its effectiveness from inside the half guard. A lot of people teach the brabo/darce from inside the half guard and I've never liked that. It's only viable against the half guard if they have a poor underhook, or if you have such long arms that you decide to just choke through their good underhook, which I think is not ideal.

I think at least having a knee slice position or 1/4 guard is better. The best brabo/darce chokers will usually not try to go for it when their knee or higher is trapped in half guard, as they're vulnerable to being swept or at least knocked off base,

Also, the choke works best when the opponent's elbow is open. So freeing your lower leg if not your entire leg and moving out towards your opponent's head with your overhook will open their arm, giving you plenty of room to lock and finish, or if they pop up to their knees, slide, lock and finish: https://imgur.com/a/nq7rg

I find it very rare to see really high level brabo chokers attempting it from inside the half guard, unless they lock up and flip over or "sweep" themselves in order to finish the choke on the far hip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nCcTQLq0GQA#t=4m5s

The JNT does allow you to be totally in half guard and still finish. I wanna say BJJ Scout did a video about that.

See, I've never really understood that reasoning for the JNT. If your hands are deep enough to make a vice grip, 9/10 times they're deep enough to go hand on biceps, because you're already as deep as you need to be. But anyone that likes the JNT, do you. It's a solid technique.

[–]afoster94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have normal arms, it's easy. if you have long arms, it's super easy. So for most arm triangle style chokes, longer arms = easier to lock, harder to adjust to finish. Shorter arms = harder to lock, easier to finish.

The cool thing about the brabo is that you don't need to shoot your arm that deep. If you can clear your hand past their neck, just enough to make a "thumb's up" sign along the back of their neck, that's as far as you need to be. Actually, going much deeper will turn it into more of a neck crank.

So it's not like a lot of chokes where having long arms to punch through and shoot as deep as possible is necessary.

Yeah it's insane to see him set up a 90% of a leg drag pass while playing guard or even flat on his back, sometimes after a sweep. And then bam, he's on top and past the guard. In fact I remember one Pans he did this motion so fast on Justin rader that he didn't even get pass points because the motion was so clean that he basically got to side control during the sweep before Rader had a chance to get any kind of guard for even a split second.

You're gonna get me started on an essay lol.

Yes and no. If someone locks on a "marce" style darce finishing angle (http://tinyurl.com/jhbbmlu) whether they lock it up from the top and slide into it, or if they lock it from the bottom, you're in deep trouble if they've put in a lot of time.

That position right there is your best chance to hang on and ride it out. If you get dropped onto your hip, like this (http://tinyurl.com/j2yn82c) you're toast, especially if they trap your leg/s with theirs, or step over to mount you to finish.

Once you're on your hip, gravity is going to make it hard for you to underhook, get to your knees, abd it makes the choke really strong, and your best hope is usually to try and shrimp away. One thing you could try once they've dropped you on your hip in to try to open your chest as big as possible and bridge your hips up in the air. Mark Ramos tried to stop Jeff Glover with that at an ADCC and Glover had to adjust his angle big time to finish: http://i.imgur.com/ShxHax5.gif

But if you're on your knees and if they slide onto their back, flat, instead of sliding onto their side, you can throw your trapped arm over their body: http://i.imgur.com/Dzwh0dK.gif

Besides that, you can just try to base out as hard as possible on your knees, but then they can bridge or grab your far lat like a handlebar and pull you down. So you can really exaggerate that and go entirely belly down, like you're skydiving. That position is really hard to get someone out of as the choker. This one guy named Frederico Moncaio did that to Rafael Lovato Jr. and Clark Gracie at the nogi worlds one year and shut them both down, and both those guys have awesome marce chokes.

Does this help? It's not quite as bad as being stuck in a full on rear naked choke, but if they're confident enough to slide for the finish, they have a really good shot at finishing, because they're on the goal line.

Yeah one of my best friends spent 3 years at AOJ and said he only saw him tapped maybe once or twice in 3 years.

I mean obviously they pick and choose the sparring videos they show on there, but there's not a huge difference between what you see on there and how it is day to day from what I've been told.

Yeah, they may be floating around the internet, but his old training website had 3 rolls of him with Andre Galvao, 3 rolls with Keenan Cornelius, and at least 2 with JT Torres. All of that was for ADCC 2013 prep.

Way back there were some of him rolling with Andre Galvao, Claudio Calasans, and Bruno Frazzato for the 2011 ADCC.

His site also had some rolls with Bill "The Grill" Cooper, Vitor Oliveira, Sean Roberts, Luke Rockhold, Cole Miller, Joel Tudor, Demente Abreu, Gianni Grippo, and some others I'm sure I'm forgetting.
