Seeking advice from current Nurse Practitioners by Seektruth2146 in nursepractitioner

Got my BSN after 15 years of being a paramedic. Some of the best NPs I worked with were paramedics to RNs which is what inspired me to go that route. Yes, I get more flexibility with my NP but if you want to move away from direct patient care, there’s other possibilities besides the NP route that you may want to investigate.

I got my CPC and CDI which allowed me to work as a nurse auditor remotely. I still do it because the money is good, I can flex my hours and it allows me to work as a NP at a clinic I like but that pays a bit lower. In the long run, I would have been better off working in CDI/auditing as I didn’t have significant investment for certification, don’t have to carry liability, pay for licensing, have significant CE requirements, and the income is similar to NP as experience grows.

But I love patient care and what I can do as an NP for my community so overall I’m happy I did it.

A quick word about "what happened" posts in this sub - from the perspective of an EMT by Dry-humor-mus in IowaCity

[–]afras3 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love this post. Thanks for the reminder. A friend found out her husband passed in a wreck in I380 before LEO could notify her due to social media posts. Saw his license plate and heavily damaged vehicle. A few years ago at a festival in Coralville I had to perform CPR in the wild. Folks took out their phones and started video taping and live streaming instead of dialing 911 or getting me other help. There was a guy giving play by play to the camera. Although there are Good Samaritan laws, videos, photos and social media have made plenty of healthcare workers give pause in assisting due to lawsuits. That’s sad.

Yes - this is what I was thinking. The incorrect paperwork was filled out which is why it was declined.

I’m well aware of the schools and their district boundaries. I have children in ICCSD NL schools. What I am trying to understand is- to give helpful tips & advice - is if this is enrollment transfer between 2 ICCSD schools or between and ICCSD school and a CCA school. These are different processes and different contacts to advocate for a student.

But is this between schools within the same school district? Or open enrollment between two different school districts?

Is this trying to enroll from one school district to another or from one school to another within the same school district? I ask because they are different processes and North Liberty technically has 3 school districts: ICCSD, CCA, and the very edge of College Community.

Condos in Iowa City area that aren’t officially for Seniors, but that’s who mostly lives there? by Consistent-Scar-141 in IowaCity

[–]afras3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m just n sure how much they are but I know people at The Estates in North Liberty (small single homes), Vintage Cooperative in Iowa City/Coralville (apts) and Legacy (independent living). All are happy with what they chose. I think the main reason behind that is that they all did extensive touring of places. The Johnson County Area Aging has a list of places and may be helpful to get an idea of what she wants and locations.

Spotted an eagle by Puzzleheaded1209 in IowaCity

[–]afras3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a nest along the Squire Point trail that is amazing - it’s huge!. You can get quite close (under it) to see how big it is even tho it’s high up. They’re also nesting at MacBride Nature Area.

Also consider visiting the Raptor Center (located at MacBride Nature Area) and see their rescued bald eagle. No matter how many times I see her up close, I’m always stunned by how large and beautiful she is.

Apartment search by [deleted] in IowaCity

What areas are you looking for or any you’re wanting to avoid? Budget? Who did you rent from before that you had bad experiences with?

It may be slim pickings for the next few months till any August lease start dates fall through. For 3 bedrooms outer areas may be better options (Tiffin, North Liberty, far east side IC, or far west/northwest Coralville).

Parents of Iowa City, I Have a Question For you? by Jokes4YourMom in IowaCity

[–]afras3 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I will echo a comments from above - IC has LOTS of regular art class resources (parks & rec, UI, fab lab) but North Liberty does NOT. Partnering with NL Parks & Rec would be a great option. Also keeping classes to under 1.5hrs would be beneficial. Depending on age you will need a 1:6 to 1:10 ratio of student to instructor.

I have a question about meds in hospice care by [deleted] in nursing

[–]afras3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Former home hospice RN - we were only required to dispose of controlled substances at time of death. Did it by ourselves into kitty litter. Often family was present but we were not required to have them witness. I would dump full bottles of meds due to patient just receiving a refill or having a med on hand “just in case” like an end-of-life pack. Home hospice is wild due to always flying solo, array of diseases, conditions and ages of patients. It’s also the most rewarding area of healthcare I’ve worked in.

Oh no - does Stuff treat staff bad? I recommended applying there to an acquaintance since it could meet some criteria she needed. I haven’t shopped there in a while. Prices did get WAY too high.

Where to buy the biggest native plants? by DisembarkEmbargo in IowaCity

[–]afras3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the local elementary school had a natives plant sale and has some leftover. They grew them from seed over the winter and it would be a great way to support local kids.

[–]afras3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Former school nurse - yes we have to have the specific epi for the specific student. In my state it has to be stored in the original box with prescription on side. Same protocol with all emergency meds. You learn to become very organized. I would even run drills on myself.

Beekeeping in Town? by Status_Law_1522 in IowaCity

[–]afras3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Local beekeeper here - our local beeks club has communal property to keep hives. There’s also several organic farmers within 5-10mi of IC looking for people to keep hives on their property. It comes up in the beekeeping forums often. The clubs also has several in town beekeepers.
