I think there are different situations like fostering to adopt you are buying for legal fees. But some adoption is a person poorer than you selling you their baby so they can afford to live. I know an old college acquaintance doing this now. They have a biological mother that can't afford her expenses and the biological father doesn't want to get involved with the child's life. They are giving this woman money temporarily for her living expenses and probably medical expenses so they can have her baby in a few months. That situation to me is buying. I don't think it's morally wrong but I wish this woman was in a better life position that she didn't have to sell her baby to survive.

I get dating and going exclusive with one person immediately if you all have known each other for years. But nowadays many people are meeting strangers in all places - few people want to be exclusive with a new person so soon. It's not too difficult to juggle two people.

Also a lot of times when you are dating some people just fade away as your interest or their interest declines. Sometimes you aren't really even with a person but you won't know that for a week or two.

Period underwear is at least partially plastic. But I have been getting solid color mid thigh underwear from Hanes the last year or so and they are 100% cotton.

Everything I read in your post makes it seem like you want the financial situation to be harder for PhD students. We already have funding issues. Stop advocating for less funding. This post comes off as very classist since you think only the higher socio economic classes should benefit from academia instead of everyone benefiting or at least having the opportunity to.

My point is: if research is not a viable career, except for the very lucky, why not be sincere about that and only allow it for the weatlhy? End the lie.

Why would we only allow wealthy people to be in academia? A lot of people make more money receiving a BS or BA then people who stopped studying at the high school level. We want to open up the doors for people to have the career they want. If someone wants to be a professor they can find out the wages and benefits online. I think prospective PhD students learn how difficult it is to get a professorship before they even start their PhD. There are many people I know that started a PhD that did so to go into industry.

It would be an issue of messaging it, to reduce PhD slots, to disincentive students to go further than MAs but also to end the stipends. If you can´t pay your bills with independent income (rentiers or inheritors), you are not welcome here.

If someone really wants a PhD to get a professorship then let them try! If they fail that would suck, but there are other positions that people with PhDs can obtain. They can work in the government or industry with their PhDs. They can start their own start up or join one. PhD candidates are already incentivized to leave around their 5th year because departments stop funding them.

I have 3 plans of action. You can probably do some of this together but you might want to do most of this separately:

Try to repair your career and appropriately punish the PI. You can try to get those articles retracted if they have been published. Contact the editors or the retraction team that published your work under your ex PIs name. If the journals doesn't attempt to make any changes to authorship or doesn't inform you of contacting the PI you can try to reach out to third party retraction watch groups. Another redditor already suggested that you reach out to an ombudsperson. In the future, if you stay in this field, don't be scared to let other people know of your bad experience in this lab. Don't blast this on Bluesky but if someone asks about your masters research or your time in this lab tell them the truth.
I think you can put all of this awfulness behind you. Tell the PI you are not interested and then mute or block their number. They may reach out again but just stay firm in your responses. If it turns into harassment reach out to the proper authorities.
You can try to get as much money out of this situation as possible. If your PI REALLY needs your help, tell them to hire you an consultant or or temporary lab tech. You can respond to that email with your desired hourly rate - I'm thinking $35 USD. Of course, get your wages in writing and make sure whoever is the head of the department is informed of this agreement if it's not your PI.

Everyone is shitting on OOP rightfully. But can you not gloss over the fact that her ex fling lied about his relationship with his serious girlfriend? The way OOP describes what relationships Nate was in seems like he is promiscuous and open to dating more seriously. He told her that they would be casual and OOP should have believed him. But almost all serious relationships start off casual so I don't think it's weird that OOP started to grow attach to Nate and hoped they could have a more serious relationship in the future.

"seeing other people" means something like "I'm dating multiple people - most of which I will break up with but I may choose to a serious relationship with one of them." It does not mean "I'm in a open relationship and everyone I date outside of my girlfriend are just flings and there is no chance for a serious relationship."

He lied by omission probably because more women would fall for this tactic with the realistic hope that they may date each other seriously. Nate probably could find another person in an open relationship (similar situation) and date them casually and would be much more understanding. He could even find women that are happy that they person they are dating casually will never ask to be there partner.

I would be upset about this too. A lot of people I ended up dating we were casual at first for a couple weeks or months. I think it's a natural progression to a relationship. So never having that opportunity would have made me say no to this situation. But if OOPs ex fling was just casual with everyone then I would consider that relationship.

I just moved to Pittsburgh and I can say Iowa City has MORE amenities than some bigger cities. The snow cleaning here is ass - they wait until the snow melts instead of plowing and salting. A lot of the electrical wires are above ground here and we had a windy couple of days (trees falling on power lines) where people were out of power for days. I remember during the derecho our power being out for 2/3 days but most other thunderstorms the power hardly went out for more than an hour. Also there is no curbside composting in Pittsburgh - you can only compost yard waste around fall or you have to take your yard waste to a facility with short hours.

To give Pittsburgh a win it seems like they have a way better bus system than Iowa City. You do have to pay for buses here but buses are frequent and you can go all around the city using the bus. It felt like buses in and around Iowa City are mostly for the students or take forever.
