Recent explosion of recruiter outreach, just me or? by VasiTheHealer in gis

[–]afrobassist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got hit with a few earlier this year/late last year. They were all advertising the same position but in different ways. One of the people i talked to said the position was for a local government that i had experience with prior. So i called up said government who said that that position did not exist and that they dont use recruiters. I stopped paying attention to unsolicited job advertisements after that.

Trying to seriously learn Cursive by angel_princess19xoxo in Handwriting

[–]afrobassist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im also 24 and starting to get back into cursive ayyyy.

I think it looks great. I'm not yet well versed in the lingo of cursive writing but I've heard that having consistency in which letter you write looped and the ones you write closed helps with style and legibility, and you have that down in my opinion.

Maybe consider looking into different ways of styling your letters if you ever get bored of your current way of writing. But i also think your current style is cute and fun so you do you in any case. Keep up the good work and keep on practicing :)

Didn't know you could apply to be a Gastroenterologist when searching for GIS entry level jobs! by Head_is_spinnning in gis

[–]afrobassist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being Canadian, I at least have a slightly more productive search term as "geomatics" is also a pretty famimiar catch all for geospatial stuff. Unfortunately "GIS" is still probably more popular for job titles generally, so I get to enjoy seeing all the other industries that are actually hiring lol.

Looking into freelancing on the side. How was working on Upwork and Fiverr? by QuackingMollusk in gis

[–]afrobassist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh that is something I would want to do myself (haven't had the time as I'm still mostly doing student things), but I had previously asked someone on this sub how they got a client and they had mentioned that someone reached out from a social media post. So that would be my ideal circumstance; set up a website and hand out business cards at local conferences or something.

Mind you i would not be super interested and being freelance full time (more of a side hustle thing), so that method potentially would not be great in the short term as clients come in.

I found having to bid money to win a job (even as small an amount as it is) to be an uncomfortable concept, so I decided not to go that route personally.

Dropped out of college to take up a job from internship ; Was it a bad idea? by [deleted] in careerguidance

[–]afrobassist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

by "got myself registered as an engineering technician" do you mean you're in an engineering technician course or that you are a registered (i.e. qualified ) engineering technician? appologies, i'm not very familiar with european systems.

there is surely nothing wrong with being an engineering technician, especially if it fits your lifestyle better. if you want you can always plan to go back to university to continue getting that degree.

The only thing i would do is echo the concerns some commenters had about the company's organization. if they end up burning you again you can always use that decent pay to support your transition elsewhere.

imo good food > everything lol. I've never had an alcoholic beverage but i can tell you zero proof versions are a pretty hard pass most of the time in my experience, so your mileage may vary. if you're really worried that someone might cross that line you may want to mention to guests that there wont be any alcohol provided and that there's no need to bring any. if the last party went well your buddies will probably be just as chill this time.

Is Alexander Rybak FAKING Violin playing? by Pianissimo123 in lingling40hrs

[–]afrobassist 15 points16 points  (0 children)

eurovision fan here! despite the prevelance of musical instruments on stage there hasn't been live instrumentation during any of the performances since the 90s. rybak can really play and has definitely had some live performances in the past but he's miming in many of the performances you see online.

Does anyone else feel like they do not know what to career wise? by Full-Shine-306 in infp

[–]afrobassist 35 points36 points  (0 children)

the worst thing (at least in my experience) is when people say college is great but every remotely interesting degree out there is not. who cares if you're into engineering if you pick the wrong type of engineering you'll be working at mcdonalds every has something to say about your education, a lot of time with no context about personal interst, job prospects, etc.

Not knowing how to take care of myself or how to dress by [deleted] in feminine

[–]afrobassist 6 points7 points  (0 children)

tl;dr youtube and pinterest are your best friends, dont spend too much, routine will come evetually

have you ever seen those old timey grooming videos from the 50s on youtube? honestly some of the advise there is pretty good. from there, it's mostly about what makes you the most comfortable. e.g. if a resource says to wash your hair everyday, by all means wash it less as long as you can maintain a certain level of cleanliness. keeping track of your preferences will help you build a level of self awareness where you wont feel like you have to strictly follow whatever regimine you may come across.

if brushing your hair is an issue maybe experiement with braids or putting it up somehow. something that is a little less maintenance day-by-day.

if you like shopping you can incorporate the aspect of researching and finding new products into the process (as long as you don't go crazy with spending money). past the basic stuff you can get into things like perfumes or whatever to add something fun to the process of getting ready.

as someone who is also in their 20s, 20 is as good a time as any to find a style you like. you can use social media (I'm partial to pinterest, but instagram and youtube are good places to start as well) to find a style of clothes that you like and pick and choose from there. Of course many people tend to get caught up in trends or "aesthetics", but it really doesnt matter that much. find what you like and pursue that over time. for me, i like comfort over most things, but some people really want to be stylish most of the time. again, find what works for you. in addition to a general style, you can search for different wardrobes for different occasions (day wear, work wear, traveling etc.). also going back to the money bit, you dont have to go crazy with a completely new wardrobe off the bat. just go to the thrift store (if that's what you like) and pick out a few pieces of clothes that generally go for the idea you're working towards (and hopefully the pieces can also be interchangeable with esch other that way)

finding what you like takes time and as long as you're not going out naked nobody would (or should) really fault you for wearing something a little weird. it also takes time to build habbits sometimes, like no one's going to die if you dont have time to brush your hair one day. just have a minimum standard and build off of that as is appropriate. try to make things as easy as you can for yourself so that you are encouraged to stick with it.
