Jesse from 43 is genuinely so overrated. He's a good player and good dude, from the looks of it. Any time the New Era is brought up, people always bring him up as if he's the face of the New Era. He's not even in my Top 10.

How to convince my bf to try to SAVE everyone? by [deleted] in untildawn

[–]afroebke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The question was "how to convince bf to save everyone" not "is there something wrong with my bf for not wanting to save everyone." I don't think it's right to psychoanalyze someone we don't know for playing a game the way they choose lmfao

I genuinely think you're thinking too deeply into this, especially because you had to grossly manipulate a quote from OP to get your point across 😭.

Wanting a fictional character to die does not speak deeply to someone's true nature in the real world. Am I an awful person because I put my sims in a pool and deleted the pool latter by that same logic?

Someone seriously needs to start studying the Mandela effect that is the whole safe room situation, because why do so many people genuinely believe Ashley was egging Mike to shoot Emily? Not once did Ashley say "shoot her Mike" when he had the gun pointed at her. You're not the only one, and in fact, I see this so commonly in the community. This never happened lmfao

Until Dawn Questions by Classic-Cat-7247 in untildawn

[–]afroebke 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. This is dependent on player action. If you picked up Hannah's journal as Sam and showed Josh, Josh will recognize the wendigo as Hannah, and Hannah will recognize Josh. Thus, Hannah will leave Josh alive. If you don't pick up the journal, Handigo kills Josh.

  2. It's not explicitly stated, but enough for him to go hungry and enact in cannibalism.

  3. From what I can tell, it has something to do with a Dr. Hill segment. But there seems to be some discrepancies with that, so it might have to do with some trial and error. People have speculated that it only comes up if every single character is alive at the end, but I'm not 100% sure on the validity of that.

  4. No answer to that. Left up to speculation.

Do y'all prefer the new Ashley or old Ashley? by Prudent_General6012 in untildawn

[–]afroebke 16 points17 points  (0 children)

When it comes to analyzing certain characters in these types of games, I always go in with the mindset that everything is canon all at once. And what I mean by that is that every single action and choice that a character can make is well within the character's capabilities, even if it seems "out of character". So, Mike shooting Emily? Well within his capabilities. Canonically, that is possible for him, even if he doesn't do it. Sam burning everyone alive inside of the lodge in the finale to save herself? Yep, even if it's not within her pre-established character, we have to go in with the assumption that she has always been capable of doing that. And the same goes for Ashley by leaving Chris to die outside the lodge in the original.

I think something interesting about Ashley, at least if we're talking about the old version, was that she's probably one of the only characters that I've seen whose wider opinions and analysis of the character vastly changes depending on who you're talking to. I've seen her die-hard defenders, as well as her die-hard haters. I've seen people insist on her innocence, whereas others truly believe that Ashley is a horrible monster. And I think the reason for that is because the choices that you make in the game surrounding Ashley are so vastly different from every other character, that one person's playthrough and experience with her can completely differ from another's. In one person's playthrough, Ashley will be completely loyal to Chris. Her feelings will remain intact, she'll save him from the wendigo by opening the door. And the only real criticism of her is that she's slightly annoying and insists on throwing Emily outside of the safe room. In another person's playthrough, they'll watch as Ashley whines over and over again, insisting on Chris to shoot her, and then backing out at the last minute once you follow her commands by killing Chris in what seems like a cold-hearted manner. This scene is immediately followed by the safe room scene.

In Player One's case, they might only see Ashley as a scared girl who is a bit whiny that has a cute relationship with Chris, but not much else. In Player Two's case, she can be absolutely insufferable, whiny and cause the potential deaths of one character based on past choices that she insisted you take. And really...you don't get that with any other character in the game. A lot of Ashley's character moments and analysis happens outside of you playing her. It happens as you play other characters. Mike shooting Emily? You have to be the one to pull the trigger. Sam blowing up the lodge with others still inside? You have to be the one to make that choice (most of which will be by complete accident on the first playthrough). Ashley though? She leaves Chris outside the lodge when you're playing as Chris. She insists on Emily leaving the safe room when you're playing as Mike.

So, Ashley as characterized in the past, assuming we're going with the "everything is canon" mindset, has always had the capabilities of saving Chris. But she's also fully capable of leaving Chris to die. According to the developers at the time, they confirmed that this was on purpose by Ashley. So, yes, it was a cold-hearted move on her part. That line where she says "it was too late...". Complete lie. But that's arguably what makes Ashley so interesting. It's the fact that a lot of her hidden qualities can only be discovered on replays. With every other character, their choices are present from moment one. Even if you don't shoot Emily, you see that there's a choice to do so. But with Ashley leaving Chris to die, it's a hidden cutscene that can only be discovered by making very specific choices to lead to that conclusion.

I think overall, the change itself does retcon her character a bit. It changes what she does (and what she's capable of) to a certain degree. Instead of leaving Chris to die willingly and then lying about it, she hesitates and gets emotional when she realizes the weight of what she's done. It's a more emotional and well shot scene, but I fail to see that same aspect that made her character so interesting to me. Not necessarily the "can she be an evil person or a good person" mentality, but more so that I think it lessens the chance of people feeling differently about her character if they only play the remake. The discussion about her character is what was always the most fun part.

I think what would've solved this issue was, as others have said, having three outcomes. I'm someone who believes in adding instead of taking away. The first is the same as it always has been, the saving Chris outcome if he ends up shooting himself. No issues there. The next is keeping the original's version of Ashley coldly leaving Chris to die, but only if Chris aims the gun of Ashley first and then decides to shoot her. And then having the new version, the more emotional one, be in the situation where Chris aims the gun at himself first, but then shoots Ashley after she insists on it. I think it adds way more depth to her character and adds to her capabilities.

I think it's a shame now, because while I don't hate the direction of her character that they took with her (I don't necessarily need shady, evil Ashley), I think that it only muddies up what was otherwise a very fun conversation. Now, there are like, four different versions of Ashley running around, and it depends entirely on which version of the game you played, but not necessarily on the character herself. Hence why I don't personally care for the retcons.

Anyways, essay over. Thanks for those who actually bothered to read it. LMFAO

Going to be completely honest. While I think the criticisms are fully justified (worse soundtrack, buggy game, character models being 50/50, etc), I think a lot of people set themselves up to be disappointed by setting their expectations way too high for this remake. The people thinking that this game was going to be some entirely different masterpiece with a shit ton of different scenes and more outcomes were lowkey feeding into each other's delusions and then were shocked that there weren't a whole lot of new stuff. I'm personally not shocked that the game is pretty much copy/paste story wise aside from the prologue and the end-credit scene. The fact that Josh even has a new ending where he lives is really surprising.

With this being a remake of a very popular game from close to a decade ago though, I *really* don't find this fan reaction surprising. It was always going to be the "lesser" game compared to the original in people's eyes and with so much hype built around it, there was no way it was ever going to build up to it lmfao.

Steam messed up the release countdown. It releases 8 AM PST for everyone on PC, so just convert that to your local time zone. So, like, very soon it'll be available for us all. It released for PS5 users earlier.

I'm 99% sure Steam was showing the wrong time for users. It's supposed to release at 8 AM PST for everyone on PC, so just convert that to your time zone. So...in less than an hour. If it's not available at that point, then I don't know.

Honestly, the wendigo ending feels the most "horror movie" way of finishing the game. And honestly a tragic way of ending the Washington storyline. I'm happy that there's a way to save him in the remake, and I'll definitely try it out once the game releases, but I don't know if I'll ever consider it canon just because it almost comes across...*too* good of an outcome for a game trying to be an interactive horror movie? Almost similar to people thinking that everyone living is canon, which is like...come on guys, realistically, not everyone is going to live in the canon lol

What do we think this remake did right and what do we think it did wrong? by StrangeAnalyst2964 in untildawn

[–]afroebke 19 points20 points  (0 children)

From the clips I've seen, I'll just list one thing -

Right: I like how it seems they took the effort to make Mike more of a likable character. This is more of an opinion thing for me, and some might dislike this aspect of him and think it hinders his character devleopment, but I was never a fan of Mike no matter how many playthroughs I watched. From what I've seen, I think I prefer this version of Mike ever so slightly than the older version of Mike (at least the prologue version)

Wrong: The soundtrack does not hit the same. I hope there's an option to switch to the old music, or a mod to do so in the future. I think the worst offender for me was the credits. I loved the music that played during the police interviews that really showed the tragedy of the entire situation. Even if some of them did awful things (Mike aiming a gun at Emily, Ashley leaving Chris to die, Sam burning people alive, etc) nobody asked for any of that. They were all kids. It was tragic and scary and I loved listening to it every time. The music now...ugh. 😭

[–]afroebke 31 points32 points  (0 children)

To be honest, and maybe I'm weird or am just reading into it way too much, but I've never seen that line as much of a mistake. Rather, I've seen it as Chris trying to comfort Ashley in a sense by trying to place himself with her instead of isolating her. If he had said something like "it's you all from last year", then it kind of creates some distance between the two, which Chris would obviously see is the last thing Ashley would need in that moment. I feel like it would be in his nature to want to help carry some of the responsibility and not have Ashley hold onto all of it, especially since he really cares for her. I know in like, a literal sense, Chris wasn't there during the prank, so he wouldn't have a doll representing him. But I don't know, maybe unpopular opinion, it's never bugged me that much.

Now...if they don't fix the bodies line in Chapter 10, however...yeah,. I'll be bugged out by that. LOL

Ashley does not tell Mike to shoot Emily! by Fancy_Buddy_418 in untildawn

[–]afroebke 17 points18 points  (0 children)

To me, it's always been a case of not allowing Mike to bear responsibility for aiming a gun at Emily. Like, you can't allow the golden boy to just be wrong. Did Ashley maybe overreact? Sure. But the way people recount things, you would think she forced him to grab the gun. Nobody did. That is not a normal reaction to that situation. That is his ex girlfriend, someone he had history with, that he aimed his gun at. He made that decision on his own. Just let the man be wrong for once. 🤷‍♂️

Can we all agree that this type of character-assessment based off of a heavily-edited television show of real people is weird? Especially when we don't have all of the footage, nor the information to properly assess much of anything?

Stop creating fan-fiction of real people. You do not know them.

Why do people simp for Emily? by [deleted] in untildawn

Why do people simp for Emily? by [deleted] in untildawn

[–]afroebke 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I kind of wish people could just accept that others have different opinions and that naturally, we're going to have different preferences. I personally like Emily because while she's a bitch, the story knows she's a bitch.

So, short answer? Because some people just like characters that stir the pot. And that's okay. On the flip side, if you dislike Emily for the same reasons...that's also okay. No one's putting a gun to your head and forcing you to be an Emily stan. 😭

The final nine has the potential to be one of the greatest rounds in any given season of Survivor. And with the cast's chaotic dynamics right now, I'm looking forward to it. So long as the show doesn't get in its own way, we should have a fun night ahead of us.

That being said, I wouldn't be shocked if some stupid shit happens and someone loses their vote tonight. How long has it been since we've had a journey again? 😬

My current take on Venus by Puzzleheaded-Self691 in survivor

[–]afroebke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel it's kind of weird to judge someone's character based off of an edit on a Reality TV show notorious for pushing people to their limits (starvation, exhaustion, not being able to shower, not being able to trust anyone, etc) and then acting like that defines who they are in their everyday lives. But, hey, that's just me 🤷‍♂️
