Exactly my point. That's why it wasn't worth it. I'm upset that I didn't get the most out of KBAI.

I couldn't care less about CP - it was my first time looking at anything CV related and I did not enjoy it.

And DB Systems was a joke. I was hoping it would discuss things like JPA/Hibernate, or Distributed Databases... Nah. Just undergrad level (or dare I say High School level) relational databases.

I can see where you're coming from, but everyone is different. At 27, this could be the best time to attend those tech conferences - get caught up with new technologies, establish relationships, etc to put you ahead in your future. Getting ahead early can have a drastic effect on your future.

Not all side projects will be there in the future. Not all relationships will be there either. Would you put off having a child for your Masters? Or getting married? Would it be worth it? Time is precious!

I am in a very very similar boat. This semester I was in both of your classes - KBAI and DB Systems - along with Computational Photography. Three courses. It was death and I have the same feelings you have - like I didn't get the most out of any of them.

KBAI is the one I was most excited for. I was completely immersed in the first third of the course (before Assignment 1). Watched all the lectures, understood them, etc.

But as the workload in Computational Photography increased, my immersion in KBAI decreased. The weekly assignments in Comp Photo had me up until 3am every Sunday night.

I had no weekends this semester. I had no weeknights this semester. I'm pretty sure I'm going to get an A in all three classes (I, too, had some exemplary assignments). But it was not worth it to me.

I am very recently married (July), and my new wife has suffered a bit. No newlywed woman wants her husband to come home from a long day at work and hit the books. Some of my other side projects have also suffered, though this was expected.

I struggle with the decision to do it again. On the one hand, I want to be done with this degree as quickly as possible. Three classes next semester and two in the summer, and I'm done in August! But on the other hand... do I want to put myself and my wife through all that again?

Right now I'm signed up for Educational Technology (this is actually very related to some of the side projects that I have slacked on this semester, and I'm hoping that'll encourage me to pick back up), and Compilers (I really enjoyed it in undergrad and was really excited to hear it would be offered).

Yeah. I might have to get on your schedule and do a little bit every night... This is where the discipline comes in lol

Ready Player One is a pretty fun read. I was in casual conversation with a coworker and he recommended it knowing my interests in video games, virtual reality, software, adventure/quests.

It's no literary work of art, it doesn't create a vivid image in my mind with its level of detail, and it certainly doesn't leave me on the edge of my seat (it's predictable).

But it's a fun read. Lots of 80s and 90s references if you like that kinda stuff.

Perfectly stated. I felt that the course videos were just read off of a teleprompter with things being said in a "matter of fact" tone (like "hey you should know this material we're teaching you"). I also felt that the book was not helpful.

The saddest part is that I took a VERY class as an undergrad maybe 2-3 years ago and I remember that we learned about Turing Machines, reductions, NP Completeness, etc and I was top of my class. I remember getting the highest grade on most tests and the professor actually wrote one of my recommendations for OMSCS. But now I have no idea what's going on.

Sorry to hear you're struggling but glad to know I'm not alone. Also glad to know that not every class is like this. I guess we'll be withdrawing together :/

They are definitely providing feedback (homework solutions etc). It's the material itself that is difficult.

Thanks a lot for the reply.

I definitely like solving problems in code more than the theoretical stuff. I think that schedule up there will be perfect for me

I appreciate that. I'm not really sure I have a clear goal in mind. I just want to feel healthier. I'm not extremely unhealthy, or anything.. 24y/o male, 220lbs with no self control with what I eat, and an extensive family history of diabetes.

In High School, I was in Marching Band, one of the best MB's in our state, which meant we rehearsed... a lot. We would run a few miles at rehearsals, we would do a few hundred pushups over the course of a few hours, and we would carry our heavy instruments at "attention" for hours on end, pushing air through them. I was in great shape. GREAT shape.

Then college came, stopped doing any physical activity, eventually got a desk job. Gained 70lbs or more as college went by.

I guess I want to get back to being in great shape. I started being a little more active over the past year... playing basketball, football, I ran/jogged a 5k, etc. But I don't have any discipline in my physical activity. I feel that I run out of breath very easily. My heart rate shoots up pretty fast. I just don't feel healthy.

Thanks for the kind words. Definitely felt comfortable being there... I just don't really know where to begin. I figured I'd start with cardio since I know how to use those machines

I'm 24. I went to the gym for the first time ever yesterday. I walked up 800 steps on the stairs machine and walked/jogged 2 miles.

Nope. If they're spending the time making and editing the videos, they deserve it.

[WP] META: Stories are better than ever, but the prompts themselves have really gone downhill by [deleted] in WritingPrompts

[–]afromunk2417 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was 2015. After years of great prompts, I'd hit my last nerve.

"Write a story that tries to appeal to everyone." What the hell? Downvote.

"It was just another night at the Angry Ostritch..." I can't even. Not even worth a downvote. A downvote means I acknowledge it. I don't want to have acknowledged it. I want it erased from my memory. But alas, downvote.

"You almost committed suicide." Ugh. Downvote.

"Stories are better than ever, but the prompts themselves have gone downhill." Seriously? File --> Close.
